The morning sun hangs low over the treeline, casting long shadows across the forest floor as Lady Sakura Uzumaki moves through the underbrush with practiced silence. Her pink hair, pulled back in a practical ponytail, catches the light as she pauses, green eyes scanning the ancient stone path ahead. The weight of Samehada rests against her back, the wrapped sword humming faintly against her chakra, a constant reminder of the beast coiled within her own soul. Beside her, Tenten Hyuga moves with equal grace, her twin katanas secured at her hips. She brushes a strand of dark hair from her face and glances at Sakura. “The trail splits here,” Tenten says, her voice low. “The rogue ninjas left signs heading toward the eastern ridge. But the temple itself is supposed to be northwest, deeper in the valley.” Sakura exhales slowly, feeling Isobu stir beneath her consciousness. The three-tailed beast has been restless since they crossed into this region, its ancient awareness picking up something she cannot yet name. “They’re not heading to the temple,” Sakura replies, her tone flat and certain. “They’re circling it. Whatever they’re after, they’re being careful.” She steps forward, boots crunching against dry leaves, and kneels beside a disturbed patch of earth. Her gloved fingers trace the imprint of a sandal—deep, deliberate. Not a scout’s mark. A guard’s. “Three of them stayed here,” she continues, rising. “Watching the approach. The rest moved on.” Tenten’s hand drifts to her katana. “Ambush?” “Possibly.” Sakura’s green eyes harden. “Or they’re buying time.” They press on without further words, the forest thickening as they descend into the valley. The air grows cooler, heavier, carrying the scent of damp stone and old moss. Ancient trees twist overhead, their roots breaking through the path like gnarled fingers. Somewhere ahead, a bird calls once, then falls silent. The temple emerges from the mist like a sleeping giant. Its stone walls are weathered, covered in creeping vines, but the structure remains intact—a relic of a forgotten era. The entrance gapes open, a dark mouth waiting to swallow them. Sakura stops at the threshold, her hand resting on Samehada’s hilt. The sword thrums, responding to her touch, to the chakra that pulses beneath her skin. Isobu’s voice rumbles in the back of her mind, low and ancient. There is something inside. Not just them. She turns to Tenten, whose face is set with quiet resolve. “Stay close,” Sakura says. “And don’t touch anything unless I say so.” Tenten nods, drawing both katanas in a single fluid motion. “After you, Lady Uzumaki.” Sakura steps into the darkness, and the temple closes around them like a held breath.

The dim light of the temple catches on ancient pigments as Sakura's eyes adjust to the gloom. The walls tell stories in faded colors—processions of figures, battles fought beneath strange skies, rituals performed in languages long dead. Some panels are eerily familiar, depicting landscapes she recognizes, symbols she knows. Others twist into shapes that make no sense, architectures that defy gravity, faces with too many eyes. She stops in front of one panel, her breath catching. Tenten moves beside her, katanas still drawn but lowered. The painting shows three figures standing together against a backdrop of fire and ash. A pink-haired woman in a red dress, a blond man in an orange jacket, and a dark-haired man with a sword at his back. They stand as equals, shoulders squared, facing something beyond the frame. "That looks like me," Sakura says, her voice barely above a whisper. She steps closer, studying the woman's face. The features are hers—the same jawline, the same shade of pink—but the eyes are different. Harder. Older, somehow. "But look at that mark." On the woman's forehead, a purple diamond gleams, rendered in careful strokes of pigment. Tenten leans in, her brow furrowing. "The mark of a hundred seals. But Lady Tsunade never taught you that." "No." Sakura's hand drifts to her own forehead, where no such seal exists. "And me and Naruto would have died before sided with that traitor." She gestures to the dark-haired man. Sasuke's face stares back at her, unchanged by time, unburdened by guilt. "But there he is. Like nothing ever happened." Tenten says nothing, but her grip on her katana tightens. A sound breaks the silence. Voices, echoing from deeper within the temple. Low and indistinct, but unmistakably human. Sakura moves without hesitation, her footsteps silent against the stone floor. Tenten follows, matching her pace, breath controlled. They slip through a narrow corridor, the voices growing clearer, and emerge into a vast central chamber. Torches flicker along the walls, casting dancing shadows across a circular space dominated by an altar of black stone. Before it stands a hooded figure, robed in crimson, their face hidden in shadow. Beside them, a man in dark armor stands motionless, his presence radiating a cold, oppressive weight. Sakura's eyes narrow. "That's her alright," she murmurs. "But who's with her?" Tenten reaches into her pouch and pulls out a small leather-bound book, flipping through pages covered in dense script. Her eyes scan quickly, then widen. "S-class rogue ninja. Calls himself War." "Claiming." Sakura's jaw tightens. "Okay. Call Gaara and—" A metallic thud lands at their feet. Sakura's gaze drops. A smoke bomb, already hissing, already spilling gray clouds across the floor. "Look out!" She grabs Tenten by the shoulder and yanks her sideways, the smoke billowing around them as the chamber dissolves into white.

The smoke clings thick and white, stinging Sakura's eyes as she blinks against it. She keeps her grip on Tenten's shoulder, pulling them both deeper into the haze, away from where the smoke bomb landed. Her other hand finds Samehada's hilt, the wrapped leather familiar against her palm. Then a woman's laughter cuts through the fog. High and sharp, it echoes off the stone walls, bouncing from every direction at once. Footsteps land somewhere ahead—three distinct impacts, close together. The smoke begins to thin, curling upward toward the ceiling's shadows. "Look what we have here, boys," the woman's voice drawls. "Fresh meat." Three figures emerge from the dissipating gray. The woman stands in the center, her dark hair pulled back, a sickly green tint to her skin. On her right, a wiry man with hollow cheeks and hungry eyes cracks his neck. On her left, a tall, gaunt figure stands unnaturally still, his face half-hidden beneath a hood. The wiry man grins at Tenten. "Let me have the one with the swords. She looks cute." The gaunt one's gaze settles on Sakura, on the massive sword wrapped in bandages at her hip. "Nice sword you have there. Can I have it?" Samehada stirs. A low, guttural growl rumbles through the blade, vibrating against Sakura's palm. The scales along its hilt shift, bristling. She pulls it free in one smooth motion, the bandages falling away to reveal the shark-like form, the rows of teeth, the living, hungry edge. "I don't think he likes you," Sakura says flatly. Tenten draws her katanas, the twin blades catching the torchlight. "So you're the Horsemen, right?" The woman's smile widens. "The name's Plague." The wiry man gives a mock bow. "I'm Hunger." The gaunt figure speaks last, his voice like dry leaves scraping stone. "And I'm Death." Another set of footsteps. Heavy. Measured. The armored man from before—War—steps out of the shadows to join them, his dark armor gleaming. He crosses his arms, a cold satisfaction in his eyes. "And together," he says, "we are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." They move as one, forming a line before the black altar. Their postures shift, synchronized, a practiced display of unity and threat. Sakura and Tenten exchange a glance. Confusion flickers between them, quickly buried beneath focus. A new voice cuts through the tension. Smooth. Familiar. "I know." The hooded woman steps forward from behind the altar, her crimson robes trailing across the stone. A snake mask covers her face, its painted eyes watching them with cold amusement. "Good help is so hard to find." Sakura's grip tightens on Samehada. The blade pulses, eager. "What are you up to this time?" Sakura's voice comes out low, dangerous. "Haven't you done enough damage?" The masked woman tilts her head, the snake's painted smile seeming to mock them both.
