The heavy iron gate groans as Amber pushes it open, the sound swallowed by the dead morning air. He steps onto cracked asphalt, crowbar resting against his shoulder, and feels the familiar prickle of heat building beneath his skin. Behind him, Carol adjusts the strap of her backpack, her grey eyes scanning the collapsed storefronts and overturned cars that line the street. “East side, third block,” she says, her voice low and even. “The old electronics shop. If any power cells survived the blast, they’ll be in the basement vault.” Amber nods, but his attention is elsewhere. The symbols are new—spiraling marks carved into brick and concrete, glowing faintly with a pale luminescence that fades when he tries to focus on it. He’s seen them spreading over the past week, like veins across the ruins. The hum beneath his boots is barely perceptible, a vibration that seems to pulse in time with his heartbeat. “You feel that?” he asks. Carol pauses, tilting her head. “The ground’s humming. I noticed it last night. Could be geothermal activity, or—” She stops, her fingers brushing the crossbow at her hip. “Or something else.” They move forward in silence, weaving between rusted husks of vehicles. A shadow shifts in a broken window, and Amber’s hand tightens on the crowbar. But it’s just a curtain, stirred by a draft from somewhere deep within the building. The symbols grow denser as they approach the electronics shop. They cover the walls in overlapping patterns, some fresh, others faded with age. And the hum grows louder, a resonant thrum that seems to come from the earth itself. Amber stops at the shop’s entrance. The door hangs open, its glass long shattered. Inside, something glows in the darkness—not the pale luminescence of the symbols, but a deep, pulsing amber light.

The amber glow pulses as Amber steps through the broken doorframe, crowbar held tight in both hands. Glass crunches under his boots. The shop is a wreck—overturned shelves, scattered components, the acrid smell of old dust and decay. The amber glow pulses as Amber steps through the broken doorframe, crowbar held tight in both hands. Glass crunches under his boots. The shop is a wreck—overturned shelves, scattered components, the acrid smell of old dust and decay. But the light draws him forward, past the counter, past a skeleton still slumped in a chair with its skull tilted toward the ceiling. Carol moves along the wall, methodical. She pulls open drawers, sifts through debris, her fingers finding coils of copper wire and a handful of intact connectors. She stuffs them into her bag without ceremony. Amber reaches the source of the glow. It's a small cylinder, no larger than his palm, resting on a workbench cluttered with rusted tools. The light pulses from within its casing, warm and steady. He picks it up. The heat is pleasant against his skin, not burning, but alive. He shoves it into his pocket. “Let's go!” Carol calls out, already halfway to the door, her bag bulging with salvaged wire and components. “Coming!” Amber answers, jogging after her. They slip back through the ruins, retracing their path past the spiraling symbols and the silent, watching windows. The hum follows them, a low thrum that seems to vibrate in their bones, until they reach the fortified walls of the library. Inside, the familiar smell of old paper and candle wax greets them. Amber drops his crowbar by the door and looks at Carol's bulging backpack. He lets out a sigh. “You're lucky that you're smart.” Carol glances at him, a rare smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. “Thanks.” She sets her bag on the table and begins unpacking, her grey eyes already scanning the components with quiet satisfaction.

Carol’s hands stilled over the mess of wires and connectors. Amber felt it too—a shift in the air, a drop in temperature that had nothing to do with the draft. The candle flames flickered, stretching sideways as if something moved through them. Then the floorboards beneath their feet grew cold. A shape rose from the ground, translucent and shimmering, taking form from scattered motes of pale light. Avery’s ghost materialized with a wide, beaming grin, his arms already spread wide. “Look at my babies!” his voice echoed, warm and resonant despite its ethereal quality. He swept forward, wrapping his arms around both twins in a hug that felt like static and a summer breeze at once. Amber’s reflexes kicked in. He squirmed, laughing despite himself, pushing against his father’s incorporeal chest. “AW! Dad, stop!” He broke free, stumbling back a step, cheeks flushed. Carol followed a heartbeat later, ducking under Avery’s arm with an exaggerated groan. “We’re too old for this,” she muttered, but the corner of her mouth betrayed her. “MOM!” she called out, raising her voice toward the doorway. Emily stood there, leaning against the frame, arms crossed. A soft laugh escaped her, warm and genuine. She shook her head, dark hair swaying. “I wondered when he’d show up.” Avery’s ghost turned, his expression softening as he looked at his wife. The glow of his form pulsed gently, like a heartbeat. “I had to see them come back safe.” Emily pushed off the doorframe and stepped into the room, her hand brushing through Avery’s shoulder as she passed. He flickered at her touch, a smile still lingering on his transparent face.
