Come Back

The rusted gates of Blackthorn Asylum groan as Wesley forces them open, his flashlight cutting through the fog like a pale knife. The beam sweeps across cracked asphalt and tangled weeds, illuminating the hulking silhouette of the main building—its windows dark, its entrance a gaping mouth of shadow.

Story context

World description

Blackthorn Asylum has stood abandoned for over thirty years, a decaying monument to forgotten horrors. Its halls are lined with peeling paint, shattered glass, and patient records scattered like dead leaves. But this is no ordinary ruin—the building remembers. Time bends in certain rooms, echoes repeat the same scream for decades, and doors lead to places they shouldn’t. The deeper you go, the more the world shifts between rea...

Initial situation

The rusted gates of the Blackthorn Asylum groan as Wesley forces them open, his flashlight cutting through the fog. Jr stands at the edge of the group, heart pounding—not from fear of the building, but from the sudden, sharp memory that flashes behind his eyes: white walls, muffled screams, and a file with his name in faded ink. The urban explorers cheer, unaware that the moment they found Jr’s file in the abandoned records ro...

Objective

Jr must confront the ghost of his former self—the unmedicated, lost version of his mind that never escaped Blackthorn—and destroy the psychic anchor binding it to the asylum. To do so, he must solve the puzzles hidden in his own memories, face the truth of why he was admitted, and resist the pull of madness long enough to lead the group out alive.

Jr stands at the edge of the group, heart pounding against his ribs. Not from fear of the building. Not from the cold that seeps through his worn leather jacket. But from the memory that flashes behind his eyes without warning: white walls, the smell of antiseptic and something metallic, and a file with his name in faded ink. Admitted: November 12th. Diagnosis: Paranoid schizophrenia with psychotic features. He blinks, and the memory recedes like a tide pulling back from shore. The file is real. They found it twenty minutes ago in the abandoned records room, its pages yellowed and damp, held together by a rusted paperclip. Wesley had whooped in triumph, holding it up like a trophy. Look what I found, Jr—your old medical records. Man, this is gold. The urban explorers cheer as they gather at the entrance, their voices echoing across the empty grounds. Anna cracks a joke about ghosts, her neon-pink hair glowing under the moonlight. Laura stands apart, her dark eyes fixed on the building, her fingers brushing the silver pendant at her throat. Shane hums something tuneless, a bundle of sage in his hand. Kristen checks on everyone, her voice soft and warm, asking if they're ready. Jr doesn't answer. Because something else is ready for them. A cold wind slams the door shut behind them—a heavy, iron-bound door that had been wedged open for decades. The sound is a gunshot in the silence. The lights inside flicker, casting long, dancing shadows across the peeling walls. The group falls quiet. And in the corner of Jr's vision, a shadow moves. Tall. Thin. Familiar. It stands at the end of the hallway, half-formed, flickering like a bad signal. Its face is his face—younger, wilder, eyes wide with something that might be terror or might be rage. It opens its mouth, and the whisper cuts through the air like a blade, a voice only Jr can hear. Come back. The word settles in his chest like a stone dropped into deep water. He feels it resonate through bone and memory, stirring things he has spent years trying to bury. His hand moves to his pocket, fingers brushing the small case that holds his medication. His anchor. His lifeline. Wesley turns, grinning, oblivious. "You ready for this, Jr? History awaits." Jr looks at the shadow. It smiles. And as the group steps forward into the dark, he knows—he was never here for history. He was here to remember.

The heavy iron-bound door swings inward with a slow, deliberate motion, its hinges groaning as if protesting the effort. The heavy iron-bound door swings inward with a slow, deliberate motion, its hinges groaning as if protesting the effort. There is no wind strong enough to move a door of that weight, yet it opens wider, revealing the darkness of the main hall beyond. The movement is too smooth, too patient—like something unseen is holding it open, waiting. The group falls silent. Anna's joke dies in her throat. Wesley's flashlight beam wavers as he turns, his brow furrowing. "That door was shut. I heard it latch." "Maybe it didn't catch," Shane offers, but his voice lacks conviction. He clutches the sage bundle tighter, its dried leaves rustling against his palm. Laura steps forward, her dark eyes fixed on the open doorway. Her pendant catches the faint light, and she tilts her head as if listening to something only she can hear. "It didn't open because of wind," she says quietly. "Something let it open." Kristen moves closer to Jr, her maternal instinct kicking in. "Are you okay?" she asks, her voice soft. "You look pale." Jr doesn't answer. His gaze is locked on the threshold, where the darkness seems to pulse, breathing in and out like a living thing. The shadow at the end of the hallway is gone, but he feels its presence waiting just beyond sight, patient and knowing. Wesley squares his shoulders, the crowbar tight in his grip. "Alright. We came here to explore, didn't we?" He forces confidence into his voice, but it cracks at the edges. "Door's open. Let's not waste time." He steps forward, his boots echoing on the cracked floor tiles. Anna follows, her camera raised, though her hands tremble slightly. Shane and Laura exchange a glance before moving after them, and Kristen touches Jr's arm gently, urging him forward. The doorway looms before them, a mouth of shadow swallowing the light. As Jr crosses the threshold, he feels it—a shift in the air, a pressure change that makes his ears pop. The temperature drops, and the smell of antiseptic and old paper fills his nostrils. The memory surges again: white walls, a narrow bed, a window with bars. He blinks, and for a moment, he is standing in a corridor that looks exactly like the one from his past—same peeling paint, same flickering fluorescent lights. Wesley's voice calls from ahead, distant and distorted. "This way. I think I see the main ward." The door behind them swings shut again, not with a slam, but with a soft click, like a latch settling into place. No one mentions it. No one looks back. But Jr feels the shadow smile in the dark behind them.

The group moves deeper into the main hall, their footsteps echoing against walls that seem to absorb sound rather than reflect it. The group moves deeper into the main hall, their footsteps echoing against walls that seem to absorb sound rather than reflect it. Wesley's flashlight cuts a path through the gloom, revealing overturned gurneys and scattered papers that crumble to dust as they pass. Anna keeps her camera rolling, though she's stopped making commentary. "Feels like a morgue in here," she mutters. Wesley opens his mouth to reply, but his flashlight flickers. Once. Twice. The beam stutters like a dying heartbeat, then goes dark. He taps the casing, clicks the switch, but nothing happens. The bulb remains dead. "What the hell?" He shakes it, but the silence that follows is answer enough. Anna's light dies next. A soft whimper escapes her lips before she catches herself. "Okay. Not funny anymore." She smacks her flashlight against her palm, but the darkness only deepens. Shane steps forward, his own beam wavering. "Maybe it's interference. Old wiring, electromagnetic fields—" His words cut off as his light sputters and dies mid-sentence, leaving him standing in shadow. The darkness is absolute. Suffocating. It presses in from all sides, thick as water, stealing breath and orientation. Jr feels the familiar panic rising, the walls of memory closing in. Then a soft glow emerges from the blackness. Laura's pendant hangs from her neck, its silver surface emitting a faint, cool luminescence. It isn't bright enough to illuminate the room, but it casts her face in pale light, her eyes wide and unblinking. "I can see something," she whispers, her voice barely audible. "In the dark." Wesley grabs her shoulder, his grip tight. "What? What do you see?" Laura doesn't answer. Her gaze is fixed on something beyond them, further down the hall. The pendant's glow pulses once, twice, in rhythm with an unseen heartbeat. Kristen reaches for Jr's arm in the darkness, her fingers trembling. "We should stay together," she says, her voice steady despite the fear creeping into her words. "No one moves alone." The silence stretches. The darkness breathes around them, patient and waiting. Somewhere in the depths of the asylum, a door creaks open, then slowly closes again. Wesley's jaw tightens. He can't see his own hands in front of his face, but he refuses to let the group see him falter. "Alright. We stick together. Laura, you lead. That pendant is all we've got." Laura nods slowly, her eyes still fixed on the unseen thing in the dark. She takes a step forward, and the pendant's glow follows her like a living flame, casting long shadows that dance and writhe along the walls.
