Bruce steps off the Greyhound bus into the choking haze of the city, the engine's rumble fading behind him like a dying heartbeat. Towering skyscrapers claw at the smoggy sky, their glass facades reflecting a frenzy of honking taxis and shuffling crowds. He clutches his worn duffel bag, the only remnant of his village life, and inhales the sharp tang of exhaust mixed with street food grease. This is freedom, he tells himself—or at least the start of it. Back home, the fields stretched endlessly, but so did the poverty. Here, opportunity pulses in every shadow. The first day unravels fast. Job listings in the free paper demand experience he doesn't have, apartments laugh at his empty pockets, and the corner diner slings coffee too pricey for a man with twenty bucks left. Hunger gnaws at his gut as dusk falls, neon signs flickering to life along cracked sidewalks. Gangs mark their turf with graffiti tags, whispers of deals gone bad hanging in the air like gun smoke. Bruce leans against a lamppost, sweat beading on his forehead, watching a group of sharp-dressed men eye him from across the street. Predators, he thinks. Gotta be one, not prey. That's when she appears. A woman glides from the alley, her heels clicking with purpose against the pavement. Melanie—though he doesn't know her name yet—carries herself like she owns the night, her dark hair cascading over one shoulder, red lips curved in a knowing smile. She's heading into a pulsing club called The Velvet Den, its bass thumping through the doors like a challenge. Bruce straightens, drawn by her confidence amid the chaos. "You look lost, stranger," she says, pausing under the club's awning. Her voice cuts through the noise, warm but edged with street smarts. She sizes him up, green eyes lingering on his broad shoulders and determined jaw. Up close, her perfume—jasmine and something wild—cuts the city's rot. "Just... figuring it out," Bruce replies, his village drawl thickening under her gaze. He meets her eyes, feeling a spark he can't name, a pull stronger than the hunger. She laughs softly, a sound that promises secrets. "City eats the lost alive. Come on, my uncle's inside. He might have work for a guy like you." She holds out a hand, manicured nails glinting, and for a moment, the world narrows to that gesture—salvation or snare, he can't tell. Bruce takes it, her skin cool against his calluses, and follows her into the club's throbbing heart, where shadows hide deals that could make or break him.

The Velvet Den throbs with heat and shadow, weeks blurring since Bruce first crossed its threshold. Melanie's uncle has pulled him deeper into the club's underbelly—small jobs at first, then sharper edges that test his nerve. Tonight, haze from spilled drinks and backroom smoke clouds Bruce's head. He stirs on the stage, the roar of the crowd slamming into him like a fist. Spotlights sear his vision as Melanie sways above, her body arched in the rhythm of her routine, dark hair whipping with each twist. Her green eyes lock on his, surprise flickering beneath the performance mask. He surges to his feet, heart pounding, and grabs her hand mid-spin. "We have to go—now," he mutters, voice lost in the bass but urgent in her grip. She doesn't hesitate, lacing her fingers with his as they bolt from the platform, patrons hooting in confusion. Chaos erupts at the entrance: Ruben looms there, a hulking shadow flanked by his men, eyes narrowed like a wolf scenting blood. Bruce glimpses the danger in that stare—the hunter who's shadowed their steps for too long. Melanie yanks him toward the back, heels skidding on sticky floors. The exit door looms, rusted and bolted shut. Bruce rears back and drives his boot into it with raw force, the metal groaning before splintering open. Cool night air rushes in, carrying the city's smog. They spill into the alley, her jasmine perfume mingling with his sweat as they sprint through labyrinthine backstreets, dodging trash bins and flickering neon. Home—a cramped apartment above a laundromat, Melanie's hidden bolt-hole—welcomes them with dim lamplight and the hum of a distant fan. She bolts the door, chest heaving, and leans against it, her stylish outfit torn at the hem. Bruce paces the narrow space, adrenaline still firing through his veins, his casual clothes damp and clinging. The room feels smaller now, charged with the near-miss, posters peeling from the walls and a half-empty bottle of cheap wine on the table. She steps closer, her hand finding his arm, fingers tracing the tension there. Warmth blooms where she touches, cutting through the chill of escape. "That was too close," she whispers, her breath steadying against his shoulder. Her eyes search his face, vulnerability cracking her charming facade for the first time. Outside, distant sirens wail, a reminder that the city never sleeps.

Her fingers linger on his arm, tracing the corded muscle beneath damp fabric, a silent anchor in the charged air. Her fingers linger on his arm, tracing the corded muscle beneath damp fabric, a silent anchor in the charged air. Bruce stills his pacing, turning to face her fully, the narrow room shrinking around them. Melanie's green eyes hold his, stripped of their usual mask, revealing a raw edge that pulls him closer. He cups her cheek, thumb brushing the smudge of stage makeup, and she leans into the touch, her breath warm against his skin. For a heartbeat, the world narrows to this—the jasmine scent of her, the distant hum of the laundromat dryers below, the way her torn hem brushes his leg. Their lips meet softly at first, a tentative press born of survival's edge, deepening as adrenaline twists into something fiercer, more urgent. A heavy pounding shatters the moment, the bolted door shuddering under brutal fists. Plaster dust sifts from the frame like fine snow. "Melanie! I know you're in there with that stray dog of yours!" Ruben's voice booms through the wood, muffled but laced with venom, his men murmuring threats beyond. The door rattles again, hinges creaking in protest. Bruce breaks the kiss, yanking her sideways into the room's shadowed corner, his body shielding hers against the peeling wall. Her heart hammers against his chest, pulse syncing with his own frantic rhythm. She clutches his shirt, nails digging in, eyes wide but steady. Sweat beads on his brow anew, not from the run but this fresh wave of dread—the hunter's found their hole too soon. The half-empty wine bottle gleams mockingly on the table, forgotten now amid the chaos. Another pound lands, fiercer, splintering the door's edge with a sharp crack. Ruben's laugh filters through, low and predatory. "Come on out, Bruce. Vera sends her regards—says you owe her a proper goodbye." Melanie stiffens at the name, her grip tightening, a flicker of unspoken history crossing her face. Bruce scans the room—the rickety window overlooking the alley fire escape, the worn duffel slung over a chair—mind racing for an out. The fan whirs on indifferently, stirring the air as footsteps shuffle outside, heavy and deliberate. Sirens wail closer, threading through the night like uncertain allies.
