The heavy gates clang shut behind you, the sound echoing in the unnatural twilight. Dust swirls around your worn leather boots as you stumble forward, the rough ground a stark contrast to the cold stone you knew within the city walls. Each breath is a ragged gasp, the air thick with the cloying scent of damp earth and something else… something ancient and subtly metallic. Your fingers clench, nails digging into your palms. Revenge. The word is a burning brand in your mind, eclipsing the fear that claws at your throat. They think they've broken you, these self-righteous dogs of the king. They believe banishment is a death sentence. Perhaps it is. But death won't stop you. It will only fuel the fire. Before you, the Whisperwood looms – a tangled mass of gnarled trees clawing at the sky. The very light seems to bend and warp within its depths, creating the illusion of movement where there is none. You hesitate, every instinct screaming at you to turn back, to beg for forgiveness, to accept your fate. But you cannot. With a surge of defiance, you step off the path, leaving the false security of the road for the unknown terrors of the wood. Each footfall is deliberate, a promise whispered to the gathering shadows. The air grows colder, a bone-deep chill that seeps into your marrow. The sounds of the forest rise around you – the rustling of unseen creatures, the snap of twigs underfoot, the distant, mournful howl that sends a shiver down your spine. You pull the tattered remains of your cloak tighter around you, the coarse fabric offering little warmth. Your hand instinctively goes to the empty sheath at your hip, a phantom weight reminding you of what you've lost. They stripped you of everything – your name, your honor, your weapon. But they couldn't take your will. Deeper into the wood you venture, the trees growing taller, their branches intertwining to form a suffocating canopy overhead. The ground becomes uneven, littered with fallen leaves and decaying branches. You stumble, catching yourself on the rough bark of a nearby tree. As you steady yourself, your fingers brush against something smooth and cold. You look down. A patch of luminous fungi clings to the base of the tree, casting an eerie green glow on the surrounding area. It pulses with a faint, rhythmic light, like a heartbeat in the darkness. Mesmerized, you reach out to touch it, your fingers tingling with anticipation. The forest watches, silent and expectant, as you contemplate the strange light before you.

The moment your fingers brush against the luminous fungi, it crumbles into dust. The eerie green glow fades, leaving you in near darkness once more. You stare at your hand, the faint phosphorescence clinging to your skin like ghostly pollen. So much for that. A wave of realization washes over you. You've never been outside the city walls...

The moment your fingers brush against the luminous fungi, it crumbles into dust. The eerie green glow fades, leaving you in near darkness once more. You stare at your hand, the faint phosphorescence clinging to your skin like ghostly pollen. So much for that. A wave of realization washes over you. You've never been outside the city walls before. Never tasted the raw, untamed air, never felt the chill of the Whisperwood seep into your bones. You were a city creature, born and bred within those cold stone confines. Now, you're prey. You swallow hard, the metallic tang of fear coating your tongue. You know what lurks in the darkness beyond the city gates. You've heard the tales whispered in hushed tones – of ghouls feasting on the flesh of the unwary, of wraiths luring travelers to their doom, of vampires gliding through the night, their eyes burning with insatiable hunger. And then there are the trees themselves. Twisted by dark magic, they seem to watch you with malevolent intent, their branches reaching out like skeletal arms. You remember the stories of people who ventured into the Whisperwood and never returned, their souls trapped within the gnarled embrace of the ancient trees. Panic threatens to overwhelm you, but you fight it back with a surge of defiance. You won't become another ghost story. You won't let them break you. You will survive. But how? The question hangs in the air, heavy with uncertainty. You need shelter. A place to hide from the terrors that prowl the night. A place to gather your thoughts and plan your next move. Your gaze sweeps across the forest floor, searching for any sign of refuge. A hollow log, perhaps? A thicket of thorny bushes? Anything that might offer a modicum of protection from the horrors that await. There, in the distance. You see it, between the trees, a dark shape barely discernible against the gloom. It could be nothing more than a trick of the light, a figment of your imagination fueled by fear. But it could also be your salvation. You hesitate, weighing your options. Staying here, exposed and vulnerable, is a death sentence. But venturing further into the unknown is a gamble. What if that dark shape is not shelter, but a trap? What if it leads you straight into the jaws of some unspeakable horror? You clench your fists, your knuckles white. You have no choice. You can't stay here. You have to take the risk. With renewed determination, you set off towards the dark shape, your senses on high alert. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, sends a jolt of adrenaline through your veins. The air grows colder, the shadows deeper. You feel like you're being watched, hunted. As you draw closer, the dark shape begins to take form. It's not a natural formation, you realize. It's a structure of some kind, built from rough-hewn logs and covered in moss and vines. A shack, perhaps? Or something else entirely? A sliver of hope flickers in your chest. Maybe, just maybe, you've found a haven in this forsaken place.

The shack looms before you, a crude structure of weathered logs swallowed by the encroaching forest. Vines, thick as pythons, strangle its walls, and a carpet of moss blurs the line between the building and the earth. A crumbling stone wall encircles the small property, offering little more than a symbolic barrier against the wilderness. With a deep breath, you push open the door. The hinges scream in protest, a long, drawn-out creak that shatters the silence of the Whisperwood. The sound grates on your nerves, a beacon that could draw unwanted attention. You wince, your hand instinctively reaching for the non-existent hilt of a sword. The interior is a scene of utter disarray. Dust motes dance in the faint light filtering through gaps in the roof, illuminating overturned furniture, scattered debris, and cobwebs thick as shrouds. A table lies on its side, its legs splintered. A chair is missing its back, its remaining legs sinking into the decaying wooden floor. Papers, brittle and yellowed with age, are strewn across the room, their ink faded beyond recognition. It's clear that no one has set foot here in decades. A thick layer of grime coats every surface, and the air is heavy with the smell of damp earth and decaying wood. Yet, despite the neglect, you can sense that this place was once someone's home. A life was lived within these walls, a story etched into the very fabric of the building. You step inside, your boots crunching on shards of glass and dried leaves. The door swings shut behind you, plunging the shack into near darkness. For a moment, you stand frozen, your senses straining to detect any sign of danger. But there's nothing. Only the silence, broken by the occasional creak of the timbers and the rustle of unseen creatures in the walls. This will have to do. For now, at least. It's not much, but it's better than nothing. It offers a degree of protection from the elements, a place to rest your weary bones, and a chance to gather your thoughts. You reach into your torn cloak, pulling out the small piece of flint and steel you managed to salvage from your old life. With trembling fingers, you strike the steel against the flint, sending sparks flying into a pile of dry leaves and twigs you gather from the floor. It takes several attempts, but finally, a tiny flame flickers to life, casting a warm, orange glow across the room. As the fire grows, chasing away the shadows, you begin to take stock of your surroundings. The shack is small, little more than a single room. But it's sturdier than it looks, its walls thick and its roof relatively intact. There's a fireplace on one side of the room, its chimney clogged with debris. With some effort, you might be able to clear it and get a proper fire going. You notice a dark shape huddled in the corner, and you approach cautiously, your heart pounding in your chest. As you get closer, you realize it's a bed, or what's left of one. The mattress is torn and moldy, its stuffing spilling out onto the floor. But the frame is still solid, and with some patching up, it could provide a comfortable place to sleep. You feel a surge of gratitude. You're not out of the woods yet, not by a long shot. But you've found a sanctuary, a place to regroup and plan your next move. The whispers of the Whisperwood seem a little less menacing now. Maybe, just maybe, you can survive this. But first, you need to make this shack your own. You have a choice: do you repair the bed or clear the fireplace?
