The air in the musty storeroom hangs thick and still, heavy with the scent of aged paper and forgotten things. Sunlight filters weakly through a grimy window, casting long, distorted shadows across the stacks of cardboard boxes that surround you. Each breath tastes of dust, a gritty reminder of the task you've been putting off for weeks: cleaning out this forgotten corner of your family's history. "Keviiin!" Katie's singsong voice pierces the quiet, followed by a playful thump against the door. "Are you ever going to finish? Mom said dinner's almost ready." "Almost!" you call back, your voice muffled by the layers of dust clinging to your throat. "Just...almost done." You turn back to the box you were excavating, its cardboard flaps brittle with age. This one's filled with oddities – old photo albums, yellowed newspapers, and a tangle of wires that might once have belonged to some forgotten electronic device. As you sift through the contents, your fingers brush against something smooth and cold. You pull it out, holding it up to the dim light. It's a watch, unlike any you've ever seen. The casing is heavy, made of a dull, tarnished metal that feels strangely dense in your hand. The face is intricate, a swirling pattern of gears and numbers you don't recognize. The leather strap is cracked and worn, but still supple. Intrigued, you try to wind it. The crown is stiff, but with a little pressure, it turns. A faint clicking sound fills the air, and the hands on the watch face begin to spin, faster and faster, until they're a blur of motion. A soft, blue light emanates from the face, illuminating the storeroom with an ethereal glow. You stare, mesmerized, as the light intensifies, bathing the room in its strange, otherworldly hue. The air grows cold, a sudden drop in temperature that sends shivers down your spine. The scent of dust is replaced by something else, something sharper, metallic, almost like ozone. The spinning of the hands slows, then stops abruptly. The blue light fades, leaving you blinking in the dimness, the watch silent and still in your palm. Katie pokes her head in the door, her nose wrinkling. "What's that weird smell?" she asks, peering around you. The watch lies innocently in your hand, the second hand ticking softly.

"I don't smell anything," you say, but even as the words leave your lips, the watch flares again. The blue light intensifies, casting dancing shadows on the storeroom walls. "I don't smell anything," you say, but even as the words leave your lips, the watch flares again. The blue light intensifies, casting dancing shadows on the storeroom walls. Katie gasps, stepping back. "Whoa! What is that thing?" she exclaims, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and fascination. The light pulses, growing stronger, until it seems to warp the very air in front of you. A shimmering, circular outline appears, swirling with colors that don't quite exist in the normal world. It's a portal, crackling with energy, beckoning you forward. Your heart pounds in your chest, a mixture of excitement and trepidation churning in your stomach. This is it. This is real. Time travel, right here in your dusty old storeroom. "We have to check it out," you breathe, your voice barely a whisper. Katie hesitates, chewing on her lip. "Are you crazy? What if it's dangerous?" "That's what makes it exciting!" you retort, your adventurous spirit overriding your common sense. "But... not now." You glance at the doorway, remembering your mom's warning about dinner. "We'll check it out later. After dinner, when no one will miss us." Katie nods, her eyes still fixed on the swirling portal. "Okay, but if we get eaten by a monster, I'm blaming you." With a shared glance, you extinguish the blue light from the watch. The portal flickers and vanishes, leaving behind only the faint scent of ozone. You carefully place the watch in your pocket. "Let's go," you say, grabbing Katie's arm. "Before Mom sends out a search party." You hurry out of the storeroom, leaving the mysteries of the time-traveling watch for later. Dinner is surprisingly quiet. Your parents discuss work, and Katie picks at her food, stealing glances at you. You try to act normal, but your mind is racing. You can't wait to get back to the storeroom, to step through that shimmering doorway and see what awaits you on the other side. After what feels like an eternity, dinner is over. Your mom starts clearing the table, and your dad heads to the living room to watch TV. This is your chance. "Katie, help me with the dishes," you say, trying to sound casual. "Ugh, do I have to?" she groans, but she follows you into the kitchen. Your mom smiles, oblivious. "Thanks, you two. I appreciate it." As soon as you're in the kitchen, you turn to Katie. "Ready?" She nods, her eyes gleaming with anticipation. "Let's do it." You leave the kitchen and head to the storeroom. You glance back to see your mom busying herself in the living room. The storeroom is just as you left it, the air thick with dust and the scent of forgotten things. You pull the watch from your pocket. Katie watches. Your fingers tremble slightly as you wind the crown. The blue light emanates from the watch face.

The familiar blue light floods the room, chasing away the shadows. The air crackles with energy, and the scent of ozone fills your nostrils. Before you stands the swirling, shimmering portal, beckoning you to step through. "Here we go," you say, taking a deep breath. You grab Katie's hand, a silent promise of adventure and a shared understanding of the potential dangers that lie ahead. Without hesitation, you step into the swirling vortex. A rush of disorientation washes over you as colors blur and twist around you. You squeeze your eyes shut, holding tight to Katie's hand. The sensation is akin to being tossed in a washing machine, a chaotic mix of spinning and weightlessness. Then, just as suddenly as it began, the feeling vanishes. You stumble forward, nearly losing your balance, and find yourself blinking in the unfamiliar light. You are standing in a bustling street, cobblestones under your feet. Buildings rise on either side, their facades displaying signs in a language you don't immediately recognize, but is soon revealed to be Dutch. The air is thick with the smell of coal smoke and something sweet, like baking bread. Horse-drawn carts clatter along the street, and people in unfamiliar clothing hurry past, their voices a cacophony of unfamiliar sounds. "Where are we?" Katie asks, her voice filled with awe. You glance at the watch, its blue light now dimmed. You focus on the numbers, recognizing the date displayed: July 12, 1944. "I think we're in 1944," you reply, your voice hushed with excitement. "Somewhere in the Netherlands, I think. That means..." Your words trail off as you spot them. Across the street, two girls are walking arm in arm, laughing. One is slightly taller, with dark hair pulled back in a neat braid. The other, a bit shorter with a mischievous glint in her eyes. Anne Frank. And beside her, Margot, her older sister. Your heart leaps into your throat. It's really her. You've read her diary countless times, imagined her life in hiding, and now, here she is, vibrant and alive, just a few feet away. You've developed a crush on her after immersing yourself in her innermost thoughts and feelings. You feel your cheeks flush, and you struggle to find your voice. This is your chance to meet one of your heroes, to step into the pages of history itself. You take a step forward, but then you pause, a wave of uncertainty washing over you. What do you say? What do you do? Anne and Margot pause in front of a small bakery, their eyes drawn to the window display.
