The parchment feels rough beneath my calloused fingers. 'Goblin Nest Extermination – Urgent'. The reward is decent, enough to cover supplies for a few weeks, maybe even a new hammerhead. As I scan the crude drawing of a snarling goblin, a sudden force slams into my back. "Oh! I am so sorry!" A melodic voice, laced with a breathless urgency, cuts through the tavern's din. I stumble forward, catching myself on the edge of a nearby table. The smell of spilled ale and wood polish fills my nostrils. Turning, I see an elf, her face flushed, her bright blue eyes wide with apology. She's taller than I expected, though not by much, and her white hair is pulled back so tight it accentuates her delicate features. "Are you alright?" she asks, her voice barely a whisper. I grunt, straightening up. "Watch where you're going." My hand instinctively goes to the hammer strapped to my back, ensuring it's still secure. "Again, I apologize. I was... distracted." She glances nervously around the room, then back at me. "Are you here for a quest?" I raise an eyebrow, surprised by her forwardness. "Maybe. What's it to you?" Her eyes flicker down to the parchment in my hand. "That goblin nest... it's far more dangerous than the guild realizes." I scoff. "Goblins? Dangerous? They're pests, nothing more." Though the scar on my chest throbs faintly at the memory of the raid that took my parents. "These are different," she insists, her voice rising slightly. A few nearby patrons turn to look. "They're organized, led by something... darker." I fold the parchment, tucking it into my belt. "And you know this how?" "I... I have my sources." She hesitates, then seems to steel herself. "I'm a mage. A storm mage, to be precise. And I sense a storm brewing around that nest, a magical corruption." Storm mage. Her frail frame doesn't exactly scream 'lightning bolt'. Still, I've seen stranger things. "And you're telling me this because...?" "Because I need to investigate. But I can't do it alone. And that quest is the only one available." Her gaze is intense, pleading. I consider her words, the urgency in her voice. Goblins are usually a simple affair, a quick smash and grab. But her talk of 'darker' things... Kertok always said to trust my gut. And right now, my gut is telling me there's more to this than meets the eye. "So, you're proposing we team up?" I ask, crossing my arms. "Yes," she says, relief flooding her face. "We could be a good match. You have strength, and I have magic." "I prefer my hammer," I mutter, "but I'm no mage." "I can sense the magic in you, the earth and fire, even if it is raw." I pause, surprised at the sudden feeling, a new awareness in my mind. "So, what do you say?" she asks, her voice barely audible above the tavern's murmur. I look at her, really look at her. The hope in her eyes, the slight tremble in her hands. She's in over her head, that much is clear. But maybe, just maybe, she's onto something.

My gaze travels from her worn leather boots, up her slender frame, taking in the tarnished copper staff clutched in her hand. Her blue eyes, wide and earnest, meet mine, unwavering despite my scrutiny. I search for any sign of deceit, of hidden agendas, but find only a desperate hope. "I normally work alone," I finally say, the words gruff, reluctant. The silence hangs heavy for a moment, broken only by the clatter of tankards and the drunken laughter of patrons nearby. She doesn't flinch, doesn't try to fill the space with empty platitudes. A flicker of respect, or perhaps pity, stirs within me. "Ok," I concede, the word like a stone dislodged from a crumbling wall, "you can tag along. But I ain't no babysitter." Relief washes over her face, so palpable I can almost taste it. "Thank you," she breathes, a genuine smile gracing her lips. "You won't regret this." I snort, turning toward the bar. "Don't get ahead of yourself, elf. I'm not doing this for you. There's something rotten brewing around that nest, and I want to know what it is." I wave down the barkeep, a burly man with a perpetually weary expression. "Whiskey. Double." As the barkeep pours my drink, I glance back at the elf. She's watching me, her expression a mixture of gratitude and apprehension. "I'm Bella, by the way," she offers, extending a hand. I eye her hand for a moment, then take it in a firm grip. Her skin is surprisingly soft, a stark contrast to the calloused grip of my own. "Thud," I reply, releasing her hand quickly. I down half the whiskey in one gulp, the fiery liquid burning a path down my throat. It helps to settle the unease that's been gnawing at me since she mentioned 'magical corruption'. Magic is a fickle mistress, and tampering with it rarely ends well. "So, Thud," Bella begins, her voice tentative. "Do you have a plan? For the nest, I mean." I shrug, finishing the whiskey. "Head in, kill goblins, take the reward. Standard procedure." "But if there's something more than just goblins..." she trails off, her brow furrowed. "Then we deal with it," I say, my voice flat. "One way or another." I slam the empty glass on the bar. "Another." The barkeep sighs, refilling my glass. "You know that nest is crawling with them, right? Heard they've been raiding farms further and further out." "All the more reason to deal with it," I reply, taking another swig of whiskey. "Come on, elf. Let's get some supplies." I toss a few coins onto the bar, enough to cover the drinks, and head toward the door. Bella scurries after me, her staff clacking against the wooden floor. As we step out into the bustling street, the sounds of the city assault my ears. Carts rumble, merchants hawk their wares, and children shriek with laughter. The air is thick with the smells of sewage, roasted meat, and cheap perfume. "Where are we going?" Bella asks, her eyes wide as she takes in the chaos of the city. "To get what we need," I reply, my gaze scanning the crowd. "And then we're going goblin hunting." I start walking, my hand instinctively resting on the head of my hammer.

The familiar weight of my shield settles comfortably on my arm, the worn leather warm against my skin. The hammer feels like an extension of my own hand, and the bag slung over my shoulder is heavy with the essentials for surviving the wilds. I turn to Bella, who stands awkwardly in the doorway of my shop, her eyes wide as she takes in the organized chaos of my home. "Well, I'm ready if you are," I state, my voice laced with a hint of challenge. Bella nods, though I can see a flicker of unease in her eyes. "Yes, I am," she replies, but her voice lacks its earlier enthusiasm. I raise an eyebrow, silently questioning her apprehension. She's the one who sought me out, who insisted on coming along. Now that the moment is here, doubt seems to be creeping in. "What's wrong?" I ask, my tone softening slightly. "You seem nervous." She hesitates for a moment, then blurts out, "I've never actually fought goblins before. Or anything, really." My eyes narrow, a low growl rumbling in my chest. "You're a mage, aren't you? What kind of training did you have?" "Oh, I'm very skilled with storm magic," Bella quickly interjects, a nervous smile gracing her lips. "I can conjure lightning, summon rain, even create small tornadoes. But I've always practiced in controlled environments, with dummies or magical constructs." I sigh, rubbing a hand over my beard. This is just great. I let some naive, inexperienced mage tag along, and now I find out she's never even been in a real fight. "So you're book smart but life stupid," I mutter under my breath. "I wouldn't say 'stupid'," she protests, but her voice lacks conviction. I ignore her, turning toward the door. "Well, you're about to get a crash course in reality. Goblins aren't going to wait for you to read a spellbook. You either fight, or you die." I step out into the street, the sounds of the city washing over me once more. Bella follows close behind, her expression a mixture of determination and fear. I try to ignore her presence, focusing on the task ahead. We need to reach the goblin nest quickly, before whatever dark magic is brewing there has a chance to fester. As we walk, I can feel Bella's gaze on me. She's probably trying to figure out what kind of man I am, what kind of warrior I am. But I don't reveal anything, keeping my face set in a grim mask. I'm a blacksmith, a fighter, a survivor. And right now, I'm a goblin hunter. And she will have to survive. "How far is the nest?" Bella asks, breaking the silence. I grunt, pointing toward the horizon. "A few hours' walk. It's in the old forest. Just follow me, stay close, and try not to get killed."
