The roughspun blanket scratches against your skin as you rise. Sunlight, fractured by the small windowpane, paints a hazy rectangle on the wooden floor. You dress in familiar silence, the worn leather of your boots soft against your calloused hands. The red dragon tattoo on your right arm seems to writhe in the dim light, a silent echo of a history you only half understand. Downstairs, the aroma of roasted grains and herbs hangs in the air. Elena, her face etched with the gentle lines of time, sits bathed in the morning light, a thick tome open in her lap. "Good morning, Alen," she says, her voice a warm melody. "Sleep well?" "As always, Mother," you reply, accepting the bowl she offers. The simple breakfast fills you with a quiet contentment. You speak of the day ahead, of the repairs needed on Old Man Hemlock's roof, a comfortable rhythm of normalcy. The village of Mesuda hums with life as you step outside. Children chase each other, their laughter echoing between the timber-framed houses. A young girl, no older than seven, levitates a handful of pebbles with a furrowed brow of concentration – a K-Nite awakening. You nod to the baker, the scent of fresh bread clinging to the air, and exchange a few words with a neighbor tending his garden. Hemlock's workshop is a symphony of wood and metal. The old man, his face a roadmap of wrinkles, greets you with a grunt. "Morning, Alen. Ready to earn your keep?" The morning passes in a comfortable blur of hammering and sawing. Hemlock regales you with tales of his youth, of battles fought and loves lost. The sun climbs higher, casting long shadows that dance with the dust motes in the air. Then, a scream pierces the peaceful rhythm. It's a raw, desperate sound that snatches your attention. Hemlock stops mid-sentence, his eyes widening. You exchange a glance and hurry outside, the scent of sawdust still clinging to your clothes. A crowd has gathered in the village square, their faces a mixture of fear and morbid curiosity. At the center stands a figure clad in gleaming armor, a helmet obscuring his face. He grips the arm of a young boy, who kneels before him, tears streaming down his face. The boy's desperate pleas mingle with the murmurs of the crowd. The armored figure remains unmoved, an impassive statue of steel. The armored figure's gauntlet tightens on the boy's arm, and the child cries out again, a sound that tears through the morning calm like a jagged blade.

The armored man turns his helmeted gaze down to the child, his voice a metallic rasp as he speaks. "Do you know who you attacked?" he booms, the sound echoing through the suddenly silent square. He gestures with a gauntleted hand towards a wrecked wagon, its contents spilled across the cobblestones. Shards of glass glint in the sunlight, scattered amongst bolts of fine, ripped fabric. Your eyes follow his gesture, and you notice the intricate symbol emblazoned on the side of the wagon – a golden tiger, fierce and regal. The same symbol is etched onto the armored man's breastplate. Recognition dawns: this is the sigil of the Megestics, the family that has ruled the kingdom of Atlana for generations, the family of King Ozar himself. A cold dread settles in your stomach as you look back at the weeping child. His parents, a disheveled couple, push their way through the crowd, their faces etched with terror. They fall to their knees before the armored figure, begging for forgiveness. "Please, sir, have mercy! He didn't mean it, he's just a child, still learning to control his K-Nite." The armored man is unmoved. "Irresponsible," he declares, his voice devoid of emotion. "Your child's lack of control has caused significant damage. You must be punished." A murmur ripples through the crowd, a mix of fear and outrage. Suddenly, a voice cuts through the tension. A woman, regal and composed despite the chaos, emerges from the damaged wagon. Her elegant clothes are torn, but her gaze is steely. "Spare the mother and child," she commands, her voice carrying the weight of authority. "Punish only the father. He is responsible for his son's training." A collective gasp sweeps through the square. The father, his face etched with despair, bows his head in acceptance. "Thank you, your Highness," he whispers, his voice choked with emotion. The child clings to him, sobbing uncontrollably. The armored man turns back to the kneeling father. You notice a subtle movement, a flicker of something in his gauntlet. A viscous, clear liquid begins to drip from his fingers, dissolving the cobblestones beneath. Acid. "No!" the mother screams, lunging forward. "That will kill him!" But it is too late. The armored man raises his hand, the acid poised to strike, and the crowd recoils in horror. The metallic tang of blood suddenly taints the air, clashing with the familiar scent of sawdust clinging to your clothes.

Instinct takes over. You surge forward, muscles burning, and grab the father's arm, yanking him away from the spot just as the acid drips down, hissing and smoking as it meets the cobblestones. Instinct takes over. You surge forward, muscles burning, and grab the father's arm, yanking him away from the spot just as the acid drips down, hissing and smoking as it meets the cobblestones. The crowd gasps, a wave of whispers washing over the square. "It's Alen!" someone murmurs. The regal woman's brow furrows, her composed facade momentarily cracking with confusion. The armored man, however, explodes with fury. "Insolent fool!" he bellows, turning his helmeted gaze towards you. "You dare interfere with the Megestics' justice? You disrupt the order!" You meet his gaze, your voice surprisingly steady despite the adrenaline coursing through your veins. "The one disrupting order is you," you retort, your words ringing in the sudden silence. "If you can't protect the princess from a child with uncontrolled power, what good are you against a real threat?" The woman, presumably the princess, studies you for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Then, a cruel smile plays on her lips. "Pathetic," she says, dismissing you with a wave of her hand. "Jack, punish him instead. And let's move on," she orders, gesturing to the other guards to prepare the damaged wagon. "As you wish, your Highness," the armored man, Jack, replies, a chillingly polite tone in his voice. He turns his attention back to you, a cruel smile evident even behind his helmet. "Everyone, get back to your homes!" you shout, hoping to clear the square. Some villagers obey, fear etched on their faces, scurrying away from the impending confrontation. Others hesitate, their curiosity and concern outweighing their fear. Jack raises his gauntlet again, the viscous acid dripping once more. This time, it's aimed at you. You sidestep quickly, the acid splashing harmlessly against the ground. He advances, relentless, each gesture a deadly threat. You dance around him, dodging the streams of acid that melt the cobblestones. Suddenly, a familiar voice pierces through the chaos. "Alen!" Your mother, Elena, pushes through the remaining crowd, her face pale with worry. She must have heard the commotion from the edge of the square. Your heart leaps into your throat. Elena is defenseless, and Jack is unpredictable. He raises his gauntlet again, but this time, his aim is off. Perhaps he is losing his patience, or perhaps fate is cruel. The stream of acid veers wildly, heading straight for your mother. "Mother, no!" you scream, but it's too late. You lunge forward, desperately trying to intercept the deadly projectile, but you're too far away. The acid is almost upon her, poised to inflict unimaginable pain, when a figure darts in front of Elena, intercepting the flow. The metallic tang of blood is heavy in the air.
