The worn leather of Ilsa's pack creaks in protest as she slings it over her broad shoulder. The midday sun beats down on Whitehaven, turning the cobblestone streets into shimmering mirages. Six years. Six years she spent marching under the city's banner, and now, all she feels is…empty. The city bustles around her, a cacophony of hawkers' cries, the rumble of carts, and the chatter of merchants haggling over prices. It's a familiar noise, one that used to fill her with a sense of belonging. Now, it just grates. She adjusts the grip on her maul, the heavy head resting comfortably against her palm. It's a comforting weight, a tangible reminder of her skills. Skills that aren't exactly in high demand outside the army. A bead of sweat trickles down her temple, and she wipes it away with the back of her hand, smearing grime across her forehead. She needs to find a place to wash, and preferably, a place to drink. Maybe the two can be combined. The Salty Siren, a tavern down by the docks, comes to mind. It's a rough place, frequented by sailors and dockworkers, but they serve a potent ale, and the food isn't half bad. Besides, a little roughness never bothered her. She starts walking, her long strides eating up the distance. The crowd parts before her, a natural reaction to her size and the grim set of her jaw. She catches snippets of conversations, whispers about the rising price of grain, the latest gossip from the court, the war with the Easterners. The war… She shoves the thought away. She's done with wars. Done with following orders. Done with watching her friends die for causes she barely understood. The air grows heavy with the smell of salt and fish as she approaches the docks. Gulls circle overhead, their cries echoing off the water. The Salty Siren is easy to spot, its faded blue paint peeling from the wooden facade. A crude sign depicting a mermaid hangs crookedly above the door. She pushes the door open, and the smells of stale beer, sweat, and fish hit her like a wall. The tavern is dimly lit, the only light filtering in through the grimy windows. A handful of patrons are scattered around the room, nursing their drinks and talking in low voices. A barkeep with a face like a crumpled parchment stands behind the bar, wiping it down with a rag. For a moment, Ilsa just stands there, letting her eyes adjust to the gloom. The Salty Siren doesn’t look the same somehow. It feels…smaller. The air is too thick. Too quiet. Even the stale ale seems different. It’s not the place itself; it’s her. She’s changed, and now everything is alien. She isn’t sure what to do next, or even if this is the right path for her.

The potent ale burns a familiar path down Ilsa's throat, momentarily eclipsing the unease that clings to her like the salty air. She settles onto a stool at the bar, the worn wood groaning beneath her weight, and surveys the tavern. The barkeep, a man named Finn, she recalls, raises a questioning eyebrow. She nods, and he refills her tankard without a word. Around her, the conversations hum, a low drone of speculation and complaint. A pair of sailors argue over a card game in the corner, their voices rising and falling with the rhythm of the waves. A lone woman sits nursing a drink at a table near the back, her face hidden beneath a wide-brimmed hat. A hooded figure sits at a table in the darkest corner, their face entirely obscured. They seem to be watching her. Ilsa takes another swig of her ale, the bitterness doing little to cut through the feeling of being adrift. What is her next move? She could try to find another mercenary company, but the last one left a sour taste in her mouth. Too much pointless bloodshed, too little reward. Maybe she could head back to the highlands, help her parents with the farm. The thought brings a flicker of warmth, but she quickly dismisses it. She isn't a farmer. She is a soldier. Or…was. What is she now? Her gaze drifts to the window, where the sun is beginning to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. The harbor is bustling with activity, ships coming and going, their sails billowing in the wind. Each one is going somewhere, carrying people with purpose. A sudden movement catches her eye. The hooded figure in the corner is rising, their face still hidden in shadow. They move with a strange grace, their footsteps silent on the wooden floor. The figure begins walking towards her, and Ilsa tenses, her hand instinctively reaching for the handle of her maul. She doesn’t recognize the person, but they seem intent on approaching her. As they get closer, Ilsa can make out a few details. The figure is tall and slender, their cloak made of a dark, shimmering material that seems to absorb the light. A pair of gloved hands are clasped in front of them, and a faint scent of lavender wafts from their direction. They stop in front of her, their head tilted slightly as if studying her. Then, they speak, their voice a low, melodic whisper that seems to resonate in the air. "Ilsa Ravenlock," they say, "I have been expecting you."

A hint of amusement plays at the corner of the figure’s mouth, barely visible in the dim light. They glide into the seat opposite Ilsa with a fluid motion that seems almost unnatural, the lavender scent intensifying slightly. The wood of the stool doesn't creak under their weight. "Indeed," the figure replies, their voice still a soft whisper, "expectations are rarely met in this world. But I assure you, my intentions are… mutually beneficial." They pause, as if considering their words, before continuing. "I have a proposition for you, Ilsa Ravenlock. One that I believe you will find… intriguing." Ilsa eyes the figure warily, taking another swig of her ale. “Intrigue doesn’t fill a tankard, friend. Nor does it line a purse. I’m a simple woman with simple needs.” The figure chuckles softly. "Simplicity is often a mask for great complexity. And I believe, beneath that pragmatic exterior, lies a woman seeking more than just coin." They lean forward slightly, their hidden face tilting in her direction. "I know of your… dissatisfaction with your current path. Your yearning for something… greater." Ilsa stiffens, her hand tightening around her tankard. "Who told you that?" she asks, her voice low and dangerous. "Who are you, really?" "Names are… unimportant," the figure replies, waving a gloved hand dismissively. "What matters is what I can offer you. I have a task, a mission that requires someone of your… unique talents. A task that could bring you not only wealth but also… purpose." Ilsa raises an eyebrow, intrigued despite herself. "And what kind of task is this? Something that requires someone of my… unique talents," she says, deliberately echoing their words, "usually involves a lot of blood and broken bones." The figure smiles, a flash of white teeth visible beneath the hood. "Sometimes," they admit. "But not always. This task requires… discretion, intelligence, and a certain… willingness to embrace the… unconventional." They pause, reaching inside their cloak and producing a small, intricately carved wooden box. They set it on the table between them, the wood gleaming softly in the dim light. "Inside this box lies the details of the mission. The risks, the rewards, and the… challenges that await you." Ilsa stares at the box, her mind racing. What could this mysterious figure want from her? And why her, specifically? She could walk away, dismiss them as a madman or a charlatan. But something about their words, their demeanor, and that faint scent of lavender tugs at her curiosity. "What's the catch?" she asks, her eyes never leaving the box. The figure sighs, their shoulders slumping slightly. "There is always a catch, isn't there? In this case, the catch is… trust. You must trust me, Ilsa Ravenlock. Trust that I have your best interests at heart. Trust that this mission is worth the risks. Can you do that?"
