The tavern air hangs thick with woodsmoke and the yeasty tang of fermenting ale. A low hum of conversation vibrates through the timbered room, punctuated by the occasional burst of laughter or the clatter of tankards. Kira stands at the polished bar, the cool, smooth wood a welcome sensation against her bare skin. She leans slightly forward, her gaze meeting Elara's across the short distance. Elara's green eyes, flecked with gold, crinkle at the corners as she smiles. Her long red braid, woven tight and secured with a leather clasp, swings slightly as she reaches for a flagon. Then the hand comes. A thick, calloused hand, smelling of sweat and stale beer, lands squarely on Kira's bare ass. The casual violation jolts through her, a spark of anger igniting in her chest. Her left eye, crimson as fresh blood, narrows as she glances over her shoulder. The man leering back at her is a caricature of tavern excess. Bloated cheeks, crisscrossed with broken capillaries, frame a gap-toothed grin. His beady eyes, bloodshot and unfocused, swim in their sockets. A greasy mat of hair clings to his scalp. He squeezes, his grip surprisingly firm. "Well, now," he slurs, his voice a gravelly rasp, "what have we here?" Kira's jaw tightens. She is acutely aware of the attention the unwanted touch draws. A few patrons pause in their conversations, their gazes shifting from their drinks to the unfolding scene. She can feel the familiar flush of annoyance creeping up her neck, a prelude to the deeper, primal fury she keeps tightly leashed. Elara's smile vanishes. Her hand stills on the flagon. The warmth in her eyes hardens into a focused, protective glare. She opens her mouth to speak, but Kira subtly shakes her head, a silent plea to stay out of it—for now. This is Kira's battle, her burden to bear. Elara knows that look, that almost imperceptible tension in her best friend's posture. The man, emboldened by Kira's silence, squeezes again, his grin widening. "Pretty little thing, ain't ya?" The rough voice grates on Kira’s nerves like nails on stone. Each passing moment, she finds it harder to contain the ever-growing surge of mana. A faint tremor runs through the bar, almost imperceptible, but Elara notices it. She watches Kira, her brow furrowed with concern. The air around Kira seems to shimmer, just for a fraction of a second. The toothless man still doesn't seem to notice it. The man's grip tightens further, his fingers digging into her flesh. He pulls her closer and whispers in her ear, his beer breath smelling like rotten eggs. "Why don't you and me go somewhere more... private?" And in his moment, the tavern door swings open with a groan, revealing a silhouette against the fading sunlight.

The man’s fetid breath washes over Kira's skin, and a wave of nausea churns in her stomach. The simmering anger inside her threatens to boil over, and the air crackles with unspoken magic. "I think," Kira says, her voice dangerously soft, "that I would prefer you remove your hand." Each word is carefully measured, a thin layer of civility stretched over a core of raw power. The man chuckles, a wet, gurgling sound. "Or what? You gonna bite me, little elf?" He squeezes again, a deliberate act of defiance. That’s it. The control snaps. Kira pivots, her movements lightning fast. Her hand flashes out, a blur of motion, and clamps onto the man’s wrist with surprising force. His eyes widen in shock as her grip tightens. The bones in his wrist creak under the pressure. "I asked you nicely," she says, her voice now a low growl. The red in her left eye seems to intensify, glowing with an inner light. "Now I'm telling you." With a sharp twist, she sends him sprawling. He crashes to the floor with a meaty thud, sprawling amongst the sawdust and spilled ale. He clutches his wrist, howling in pain. A trickle of blood runs down his chin, where he bit his tongue during the fall. The tavern falls silent. All eyes are on Kira. The hum of conversation dies, replaced by a palpable tension. Even the bard in the corner stops strumming his lute, his fingers frozen on the strings. Elara steps forward, her face a mask of concern. "Kira," she says softly, "are you alright?" Kira takes a deep breath, fighting to regain control. The adrenaline surges through her veins, leaving her trembling slightly. "I'm fine, Elara," she says, her voice regaining its usual calm. "Just a little… annoyed." She glances down at the man groaning on the floor, his face contorted in pain and surprise. The silence stretches, thick and heavy, punctuated only by the man’s ragged breaths. The newcomer at the door clears his throat, his shadow stretching long across the room, and everyone turns to see who it is.

The air around him seems to shimmer with an unseen energy, a subtle distortion that makes the hairs on the back of Kira's neck stand on end. The man on the floor moans again, drawing everyone’s attention back to the immediate situation. Elara places a reassuring hand on Kira's arm, her green eyes filled with concern. "Are you sure you're alright? You're shaking." "Just a bit rattled," Kira admits, taking another deep breath. She focuses on the feeling of Elara's hand, the warmth grounding her. "Thank you, Elara." She kneels beside the injured man, her expression softening despite the lingering anger. "Let me take a look at your wrist," she says, her voice calm and professional. He flinches away from her touch, his eyes filled with a mixture of pain and fear. "Stay away from me, you… you monster!" Kira sighs, her patience wearing thin. "I'm a healer," she says, holding up her hands in a gesture of peace. "I can help you." "Help? You nearly broke my arm!" he cries, cradling his wrist protectively. "You shouldn't grab a woman's ass without permission," Elara says, her voice hard. "You got off easy." Kira glances up at her friend, a small smile playing on her lips. "Elara's right," she says to the man. "Now, are you going to let me heal you, or do you want to spend the night in agony?" The man glares at her, his face red with anger and humiliation. But the pain in his eyes is undeniable. After a moment, he grudgingly nods. Kira gently takes his wrist in her hands, ignoring his flinch. She closes her eyes, focusing her energy. A faint green glow emanates from her fingertips as she channels her healing magic into his injured limb. The bones knit themselves back together, the torn muscles and ligaments knitting themselves back together. The man winces as the magic flows through him, but his groans subside. After a few minutes, Kira opens her eyes, satisfied. "There," she says. "Good as new." The man flexes his wrist gingerly, his expression shifting from pain to surprise. "I… I don't believe it," he stammers. "It doesn't hurt anymore." He scrambles to his feet, his eyes darting nervously between Kira and Elara. "Thank you," he mumbles, before hurrying away, disappearing into the crowd. As the man flees, the newcomer steps fully into the tavern, and the light from the hearth dances across polished armor.
