The humid Singapore air hits Edwin like a wet blanket as he steps off the bus. It’s a world away from the dry heat of Jakarta. He clutches his worn backpack tighter, the unfamiliar English words swirling in his head. This is it. Secondary school. A fresh start, maybe. He walks through the school gates, a sea of crisp white uniforms blurring around him. The scent of jasmine and something vaguely antiseptic hangs in the air. He feels a pang of loneliness, a deep ache for the familiar chaos of his old life. The first few weeks are a blur of confusion. The Singlish slang is a minefield, the curriculum baffling. He struggles to keep up, his accent making him a target for the local kids. They call him names, mimic his hesitant English. "Ah Bengs," Bala later tells him, "Singaporean gangsters, basically." One afternoon, after football practice, a group of them corners him near the bicycle racks. Their leader, a stocky kid with a defiant sneer, shoves Edwin against the metal bars. "Eh, Indon," he spits, "You think you're better than us?" Fear coils in Edwin’s stomach, but something else flickers beneath it – a spark of defiance. He remembers the crowded streets of Jakarta, the constant hustle for survival. He straightens his back, meets the bully's gaze. "Leave me alone," he says, his voice trembling slightly. The bully laughs, shoves him again. This time, Edwin doesn't stumble. He explodes with a sudden, unexpected fury. He swings, connecting with the bully's jaw. The fight is clumsy, desperate, but Edwin fights with a primal intensity he didn’t know he possessed. He fights for his dignity, for his place in this new world. He doesn’t win, not exactly. He ends up with a split lip and a bruised eye, but the bullies back down, surprised by his ferocity. As he limps away, he tastes blood in his mouth, but there’s something else too – a strange sense of exhilaration. Later, as he sits alone in his spartan room, staring at his reflection in the cracked mirror, he sees a new glint in his eyes. He is still Edwin, the shy Indonesian kid. But he is also something more: a survivor, a fighter. But surviving is just the beginning. It's a long road to understanding how this battle – this spark – connects him to something far grander, something that whispers in the late-night YouTube videos, something that promises a destiny far beyond the ordinary. The world is about to show you.

Edwin studies his reflection. The split lip throbs, a dull counterpoint to the adrenaline still coursing through him. He touches the bruise blooming purple around his eye. It's a badge of honor, of sorts. He wonders if this is what it means to be Singaporean – to fight for your space, to defend your honor. He pulls out his phone, scrolls...
He pulls out his phone, scrolls through YouTube. The familiar hum of the algorithm fills the silence of the room. He searches for "chosen one," sifting through the endless stream of conspiracy theories and self-help gurus. Most of it is garbage, of course, but sometimes, late at night, a video will surface that resonates with him, a snippet of ancient wisdom, a coded message hidden in plain sight. He finds one now, a grainy lecture by a man with wild eyes and a tangled beard. The man speaks of "blueprints" and "awakening," of a hidden destiny encoded in the very fabric of reality. Edwin leans closer, mesmerized. Is this it? Is this the key to understanding the strange pull he feels, the sense that he is meant for something more? Later that evening, Bala finds him hunched over his phone, the screen casting an eerie glow on his face. "Eh, Indon," Bala says, clapping him on the shoulder, "What you watching? Porn, is it?" Edwin flinches, quickly turning off the phone. "Nothing," he mumbles, "Just some videos." Bala raises an eyebrow, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. "Videos, huh? You okay, man? You look like you've seen a ghost." Edwin sighs, running a hand through his messy hair. How can he explain this to Bala? How can he explain the whispers in his head, the feeling that he is on the verge of something monumental? "I don't know, Bala," he says, "I just feel… different." Bala sits down next to him, a sudden seriousness in his eyes. "Different how?" Edwin hesitates, then decides to confide in his friend. He tells Bala about the fight, about the strange exhilaration he felt, about the YouTube videos and the whispers of destiny. As he speaks, Bala listens intently, his expression unreadable. When Edwin finishes, Bala is silent for a long moment. Then, he lets out a low whistle. "Wah, Indon," he says, "You really gone crazy, ah? Chosen one? Blueprint? What drugs you taking, man? I want some." Edwin laughs, a nervous, shaky sound. Maybe Bala is right. Maybe he is just crazy. But even as he laughs, a small voice inside him whispers, believe. The weight of his destiny hangs heavy in the air.
3Chapter 3▾
Bala's words sting more than the throbbing in Edwin's lip. He wants to explain, to make Bala understand the electric hum that vibrates beneath his skin, the feeling of being on the precipice of something extraordinary. But how can he explain something he barely understands himself? "I'm serious, Bala," Edwin insists, his voice tight. "I ...
"I think… I think there's something more to all this. Something I'm supposed to do." Bala shakes his head, a mixture of disbelief and concern in his eyes. "Okay, okay," he says, holding up his hands. "Let's just say, for argument's sake, that you're right. What then? What's this 'something' you're supposed to do? Save the world? Become a superhero?" Edwin flinches at the word 'superhero'. The memory of the mental hospital is still raw, the feeling of being trapped, of being labeled 'delusional.' The idea of a 'blueprint' of reality only came much later, during a particularly intense period of his depression after his return from the UK. He had binged on YouTube videos then too, desperately seeking answers in the darkness. "I don't know," Edwin admits, the weight of his uncertainty pressing down on him. "That's the thing. I don't know what it is. But I feel it, Bala. I feel it in my bones." Bala sighs, running a hand through his close-cropped hair. "Look, Indon," he says, his voice softening, "I'm your friend, okay? I'm here for you. But you need to be careful, man. This 'chosen one' stuff… it sounds a bit crazy, you know? Don't let it mess with your head." Edwin nods, knowing Bala is right. He needs to stay grounded, to not let his imagination run away with him. But even as he acknowledges the danger, the seed of belief continues to sprout within him, watered by the strange exhilaration he felt during the fight, by the undeniable feeling that he is different, that he is meant for something more. The knowledge that Bala had been to prison for drug trafficking lingers unspoken between them. Edwin thinks of his own history, the dark years he'd spent in UK. He wonders if Bala sees the ghost of that self in him. The humid Singapore air hangs heavy around them, thick with the scent of exhaust fumes and hawker food. The sounds of the city – the rumble of buses, the chatter of voices, the distant clang of construction – fill the silence.
