The Last Man of Gala

The Galifem sun beats down on Adam's shoulders as he sharpens the edge of his battle-axe. The rhythmic 'shick-shick' of steel against stone is the only sound louder than the rush of water from the mill.

The Galifem sun beats down on Adam's shoulders as he sharpens the edge of his battle-axe. The rhythmic 'shick-shick' of steel against stone is the only sound louder than the rush of water from the mill. Shadow and Rava, his Fenrir companions, lie panting in the shade of the terrace, their grey fur matted with dust from their morning patrol. The air smells of pine and the metallic tang of the axe stone. He pauses, wiping sweat from his brow. His gaze sweeps across the valley, a patchwork of emerald fields and ruined concrete skeletons. It's been nineteen years since the princesses' rebellion, nineteen years since he learned the truth of his origins. Nineteen years of relative peace. "Anything?" he asks the wolves, his voice a low rumble. Shadow lifts his head, ears twitching, then drops it again with a soft whine. Rava remains asleep, her tail thumping softly against the wooden planks. He sighs. Peace never lasts. Not in Gala. His home, a testament to simpler times, stands defiant against the backdrop of devastation. The water mill, once a source of grain, now powers the modest defenses he's erected – a network of tripwires and alarms scavenged from the ruins of the old world. The terrace, his sanctuary, overlooks a kingdom slowly rebuilding itself, a fragile promise in a world still haunted by the ghosts of the Great Calamity. A flutter of movement catches his eye. A messenger, her tunic emblazoned with the royal crest of the Galifem, races up the winding path to his gate, her face etched with urgency. "Adam McCloud!" she shouts, breathless, "A darkness stirs in the East. The witches of the Broken Peaks gather, and whispers of a forgotten queen echo through the mountains. Princess Aurelia sends word - she needs your strength, your axe, your protection!" Adam sheathes his axe, the steel ringing against the leather. He glances at Shadow and Rava, their eyes now alert, their bodies tense. The familiar thrill of adventure, the weight of responsibility, settles upon him. He is the last man. Protector of the innocent. Husband to the eight princesses. His purpose is clear. He looks towards the horizon, where the jagged peaks loom against the sky. The wind carries the scent of pine and the distant promise of battle. He knows what he must do.

Adam turns to the messenger. "Tell Princess Aurelia I will come. Prepare a mount and supplies. We leave within the hour." The messenger nods, relief washing over her face, and hurries away to fulfill his commands. Shadow and Rava circle him, their low growls a mix of anticipation and concern. He kneels, running a hand through their thick fur. "The Broken Peaks," he murmurs. "It's been too long since we've hunted in the mountains." He rises and strides into his home, the scent of woodsmoke and herbs filling his nostrils. The main hall is a blend of practicality and comfort – weapons racks alongside a well-stocked library, maps of Gala pinned to walls adorned with woven tapestries. He moves to a chest, pulls out a suit of polished leather armor reinforced with scavenged metal plates, and begins to strap it on. Each piece is a reminder of past battles, of victories won and losses endured. As he fastens the final buckle, he pauses before a mirror. His reflection stares back – a man hardened by the world, but with a spark of hope still burning in his olive green eyes. He grabs his bow and quiver, checking the fletching of each arrow. He then takes the battle-axe, its weight familiar and comforting in his grip. It's more than just a weapon; it's an extension of himself, a symbol of his role as protector. Outside, the sun climbs higher, casting long shadows across the valley. The air is still, heavy with the unspoken promise of danger. The messenger returns, leading a sturdy steed adorned with the Galifem crest. Supplies are packed – dried meat, water skins, and a bedroll. He mounts, his gaze sweeping across his home, memorizing every detail as if he might not see it again. Shadow and Rava take their positions on either side of the horse, their eyes fixed on the path ahead. With a nod to the messenger, Adam urges the horse forward, leaving the safety of his home behind. The road to the Broken Peaks is long and fraught with peril, a journey into the heart of a gathering storm.

The path winds upwards, leaving the fertile valley behind and snaking into the foothills of the Broken Peaks. The air grows cooler, the scent of pine intensifying, laced with the earthy aroma of damp soil and decaying leaves. The trees are ancient and gnarled, their branches reaching like skeletal fingers across the sky, filtering the sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor. Shadow and Rava move with a newfound vigilance, their senses heightened, sniffing the air for any sign of danger. Adam rides in silence, his hand resting on the hilt of his axe, his eyes scanning the surrounding woods. He knows these mountains well, has hunted within them for years, but there is an unease in the air, a sense of something unnatural lurking just beyond the veil of the ordinary. As they round a bend, they come across a gruesome sight. A group of Galifem warriors, their armor torn and bloodied, lie scattered along the path, their faces frozen in expressions of terror. Arrows, fletched with black raven feathers, protrude from their bodies. Adam dismounts, drawing his axe. He kneels beside one of the fallen warriors, examining the wound. The arrow is tipped with a dark, viscous poison. Witches. He rises, his jaw tight. This is more than just a gathering. This is an ambush. A declaration of war. He turns to the messenger, who cowers behind the horse, her face pale with fear. ´Go back,´ he commands. ´Warn Princess Aurelia. Tell her the witches are on the move, and they are not to be underestimated.´ The messenger doesn't hesitate. She whips the horse around and gallops back down the path, disappearing into the trees. Adam turns to his Fenrir companions. ´We continue,´ he says, his voice grim. ´But we move with caution.´ He leads the way on foot, his axe held high, his senses on full alert. The forest grows darker, the silence broken only by the rustling of leaves and the snapping of twigs underfoot. The hunt has begun, and the scent of blood hangs heavy in the air.
