Hard life at the periphery

The afternoon sun bleeds through the gaps in the barracks' wooden walls, painting stripes across the dirt floor where Alex and his friends wage their mock war. He ducks behind a stack of neatly piled firewood, his black cat ears twitching, catching the muffled commands of older soldiers drilling nearby.

He can smell the sweat and leather, the earthy scent of the training yard mixing with the comforting aroma of his mother’s stew wafting from their small quarters. Alex, small for his ten years, is surprisingly agile. He uses it to his advantage, darting between barrels and mimicking the seasoned scouts he sees marching every day. His father, a soldier of the Imperial Army, taught him well how to disappear. "Take that, you Imperial dogs!" shouts Thomas, a freckled boy with a wooden sword, charging their position. Alex grins, his cat eyes narrowing. He leaps from behind the woodpile, tackling Thomas around the waist. They both tumble to the ground in a fit of giggles. For now, the periphery and its dangers are distant, abstract. Magic, they only know from stories the old maids whisper when they think no one is listening. Later, as dusk settles, Alex sits beside his father, watching the sunset paint the capital's skyline in hues of orange and purple. The air grows cooler, carrying the scent of pine from the nearby forest. "Father," Alex asks, his tail swishing nervously, "Will I be a soldier too, someday?" His father smiles, a warm, reassuring smile that melts Alex’s worries. "Maybe. If that's what you truly want. But being a soldier isn't just about swords and battles, Alex. It's about protecting those you love." He pulls his son close, his calloused hand resting gently on Alex’s head. That night, a messenger arrives at their doorstep. The news is delivered with grim faces and hushed tones. A border skirmish. An ambush. His father's name is spoken, followed by words Alex doesn’t understand but feels like a cold stone settling in his stomach. Days turn into weeks, filled with a whirlwind of tearful faces, unfamiliar documents, and the heavy scent of incense. The small comfort of his mother's stew is gone. The stripes of sunlight on the barrack floor now seem mocking, empty. Soon, he is on a crowded cart, rumbling away from the capital, away from everything he knows. He doesn’t understand where they are taking him, only that it is far from the warmth and safety he knew. He is going to a place called "the periphery", a place he only heard stories of before. The orphanage looms ahead, a grim, gray stone building surrounded by a palisade of sharpened logs. This is his new home now. The adventure guild will take care of him, they said. But Alex can't shake the feeling that something precious has been stolen from him, and he is now entering a world where magic is a deadly game, and survival is a hard-won prize. How will you find your place in this new, harsh reality?

The orphanage's training yard is a muddy patch of ground. It smells of wet earth and iron from the practice weapons. Alex awkwardly grips a wooden spear, the weight unfamiliar and unwieldy in his small hands. He's paired with Taylor, a boy a year older and a head taller. Taylor moves with a natural grace, the wooden sword in his hand an extension of his arm. "Alright, cat-boy, let's see what you've got," Taylor says, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Show me your stance." Alex tries to remember the stances he saw the soldiers practice, but his limbs feel clumsy and uncoordinated. He stumbles, the spear nearly slipping from his grasp. Taylor sighs, but there's no malice in it. "Okay, easy," Taylor says. "Feet shoulder-width apart, one foot slightly forward. Grip the spear like you mean it. Not like you're holding a twig." He gently adjusts Alex's posture, his touch firm but not unkind. They train for what feels like hours. Alex's arms ache, his muscles burning with exertion. Taylor patiently corrects his mistakes, offering tips and encouragement. Alex may be agile, but Taylor has strength and experience. He knows how to use his weight to his advantage. As they spar, the air vibrates with the sound of incantations from the nearby training ground where the girls practice magic. The only spells anyone seems to be learning are "Fireball" and "Magic Shield". Fwoosh. Another clumsy fireball splutters out of existence, leaving a smell of sulfur in the air. Taylor lowers his sword, a grin spreading across his face. "I bet my arrows have more punch than their fireballs" he jokes. "Maybe we should ask them to enchant our weapons instead!" Alex manages a weak smile. Despite the initial awkwardness, he finds himself enjoying Taylor's company. Maybe this place won't be so bad after all. "Again," Taylor says, his eyes twinkling. "This time, try to hit me, not the ground." Alex nods, determination hardening his gaze. He raises his spear, ready to face the challenge. For the first time since arriving at the periphery, a flicker of hope ignites within him. He might be small, he might be weak, but he is not broken. The sun beats down on their backs as they train, the sounds of clashing wood and sputtering magic filling the air.

Days blur into a monotonous rhythm at the orphanage. The cavernous sleeping hall, shared by boys and girls alike, is always filled with the restless stirrings of troubled dreams. Chores consume their waking hours, from mending clothes to tending the meager vegetable garden. Cooking duty is the most dreaded. The orphans prepare meals for the paying guests, adventurers mostly, but they themselves are only offered the same flavorless gruel, meal after meal. Training is a brief respite from the drudgery. The boys, under the tutelage of a one-armed ex-adventurer, practice swordplay, archery, and spear techniques. The girls, on the other side of the yard, repeat basic incantations, their youthful voices filled with a mix of frustration and determination. One afternoon, after a particularly grueling training session, Alex wipes the sweat from his brow and turns to Taylor. “Why are you still here?” he asks, his voice barely a whisper. “You’re good with weapons. Why haven’t you left to become an adventurer?” Taylor shrugs, his gaze sweeping across the training yard. “Going alone is suicide,” he says, his voice low. “You need a good team to survive out there. I’m looking for the right partners.” He claps Alex on the shoulder, a knowing glint in his eyes. “And I have an idea.” He leans in closer, lowering his voice. “We could survive out there, Alex. You, me, and a couple of those fireball-chucking girls.” Alex frowns, confused. "Me? But I am only good at running.." Taylor nods. "Exactly! You're small and fast with those cat-eyes and cat-ears, you can be our scout, warning us about ambushes. I can handle close combat, and we just need two of the girls for ranged support. Imagine, me with the sword, you scouting, them with the fireballs. Who would dare to face us?" The thought is intoxicating. A chance to be more than just another orphan scraping by. "There are a couple of girls who are almost ready," Taylor continues, his voice full of excitement. "Tonight, after dinner, we find them and ask them what they think." As the sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows across the muddy yard, a sense of anticipation hangs in the air. Tonight, Alex might have a chance at real freedom.
