A blinding flash, and existence bloomed. Space and time unfolded, pregnant with potential. Deep within the heart of the Creator pulsed a desire – to seed this raw world with perfection. But divine intervention was forbidden; true good had to rise from within. Thus, Merridian, an angelic echo of the Creator, was born. Merridian, in turn, breathed life into Merlin. For three millennia, Merlin had walked the earth, a weary shepherd tending to a flock of wolves. He stood now upon the precipice of the Whispering Caves, the wind a mournful sigh through his beard, older than the mountains themselves. His staff, a living branch of woven starlight, pulsed with restless energy. The robes, spun from captured nebulae, shifted with colors unseen by mortal eyes. He had spoken to Merridian in visions, seen the tapestry of time fraying at the edges, felt the shadow of Prometheus lengthen across the land. “Soon,” he murmured, his voice a gravelly echo. “He comes soon.” Not Prometheus, but his successor. The one he had waited for, prayed for, despaired of ever finding. The world teetered, ignorant of the cosmic drama about to unfold. Kingdoms squabbled, driven by greed, blind to the darkness gathering at the fringes. Even the forests seemed to hold their breath, awaiting a storm. He felt it then – a ripple in the weave, a discordant note in the symphony of creation. A flicker of destiny. His gaze, ancient as the cosmos, fixed on a distant figure, a lone rider cloaked in shadow. Gadlus. Merlin felt a surge of… disappointment. He expected a knight in shining armor but all he sees is a rogue. The figure cut a path through the tangled woods, his movements betraying a volatile mix of arrogance and desperation. Not the noble soul he had envisioned, but a broken blade, sharp and dangerous. This was the one? This callous, power-hungry youth? Doubt gnawed at him, a familiar companion these last centuries. Perhaps he had been wrong. Perhaps the visions had been misinterpreted. But the pull remained, a magnetic force drawing Gadlus toward him, toward the destiny that awaited in the heart of the Whispering Caves. He knew it was only through facing prometheus that he realizes that is not truly what he wants to become. only by facing prometheus can he became a true student of Merlin. Merlin sighed, the sound lost in the wind's lament. "The Creator works in mysterious ways, indeed". He turned and plunged into the darkness of the caves, leaving Gadlus to follow, to choose his own path, to either embrace the light or succumb to the encroaching shadows. Will Gadlus rise to become the hero Merlin needs him to be? Or will he fall prey to the lure of power, leaving Merlin to face the darkness alone?

The air within the Whispering Caves hangs thick and heavy, tasting of damp earth and forgotten ages. Phosphorescent moss clings to the walls, casting an eerie green glow that dances across the cavern floor. Water trickles down the stalactites, each drop echoing like a whispered secret in the vast emptiness. Merlin moves with the ease of one who has walked these paths countless times, his staff tapping a rhythmic cadence against the stone. He pauses in a large chamber, its ceiling lost in shadow. The air here vibrates with a palpable energy, a nexus of ley lines where the veil between worlds thins. This is where he will test Gadlus, where the youth will confront not only the illusions of the cave, but the darkness within his own heart. Merlin closes his eyes, his mind reaching out, a tendril of consciousness seeking Gadlus's approach. He senses the youth's impatience, his hunger for power, the simmering resentment that fuels his every step. He is close. Gadlus emerges from the cave's maw, his eyes adjusting to the dim light. He scans the chamber, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. "Merlin?" His voice echoes, betraying a hint of uncertainty beneath the bravado. "I know you're here. No need for games." Merlin opens his eyes, their cosmic depths reflecting the ethereal glow of the moss. "Patience, Gadlus," he says, his voice resonating with an ancient power. "The path to true power is not found through brute force, but through understanding." Gadlus scoffs, stepping further into the chamber. "Understanding? I understand that the world takes what it wants. And I intend to take it back." "Is that so?" Merlin raises an eyebrow, his gaze unwavering. "And what is it that you believe has been taken from you?" Gadlus hesitates, his bravado faltering for a moment. The shadows in the cave seem to deepen, mirroring the darkness within him. "Everything," he finally whispers, his voice laced with bitterness. "Everything I ever wanted." "Then you have come to the right place." Merlin gestures with his staff, and the chamber shimmers, the mosslight swirling into fantastical shapes. "For here, you shall confront the truth of your desires. And only then will you be worthy to walk the path that lies before you."

The shimmering intensifies, the fantastical shapes solidifying into a series of illusions. Gadlus finds himself standing before a vision of the king's court, resplendent with banners and finery. Upon the throne sits the king, a smug look upon his face, while beside him stands the princess, her beauty as radiant as the sun. But it is not the princess who captures Gadlus's attention, but the ring upon her finger, a ring he had crafted with his own hands, a ring meant for him to give. "You see, Gadlus," Merlin's voice echoes through the illusion, though he himself remains unseen. "The life you believe was stolen from you. The throne, the princess, the power." Gadlus's fists clench, his knuckles white. He takes a step towards the illusion, his eyes burning with a mixture of longing and rage. "It should have been mine," he snarls. "I earned it. I deserved it." Suddenly, the scene shifts. The court vanishes, replaced by a desolate battlefield. Corpses litter the ground, their faces frozen in expressions of terror. In the center of the carnage stands Gadlus himself, clad in bloodstained armor, his sword dripping with crimson. He looks around in confusion, his eyes widening as he sees the destruction he has wrought. "And what of this, Gadlus?" Merlin's voice continues, laced with a hint of sorrow. "Is this also what you desire? To rule over a kingdom of ashes, built upon the bones of your enemies?" Gadlus recoils from the vision, his hand flying to his mouth. He stumbles backward, his eyes darting around as if searching for an escape. "No," he whispers, his voice trembling. "This isn't me. This isn't what I want." The battlefield fades, replaced by another scene: a small, humble cottage nestled in a peaceful valley. Smoke rises from the chimney, and the sound of laughter drifts through the air. Gadlus peers through the window, his eyes softening as he sees a woman with kind eyes and a gentle smile tending to a small child. They are images of pure love, and his heart aches with a longing he cannot explain. "This, Gadlus, is the life you turned away from," Merlin says softly. "The simple joys, the quiet moments, the love that sustains us all. You sought power and glory, but in doing so, you sacrificed the very things that truly matter." Gadlus stares at the vision, tears welling up in his eyes. The weight of his choices crashes down upon him, and he finally understands the emptiness that has haunted him for so long. But this is not the end. The visions fade, and the Whispering Caves return, cloaked in shadow and damp cold. He feels unsure for the first time.
