The rain tastes like ash tonight. It streaks down the windows of the Batmobile, blurring the neon glow of Gotham into sickly, smeared halos. Alfred pilots, his face a mask of grim efficiency, while I stare out at the downpour, the chill seeping into my bones a poor imitation of the dread that's already taken root there. Three days. Three days since Dick vanished. He's Robin, for Christ's sake. A goddamn acrobat who can move like a whisper and fight like a demon. You don't just lose Robin. But we have. The comms are silent, the tracker useless, the city holding its breath like it knows something it isn’t telling. "Anything, Alfred?" My voice is rough, unused. "Nothing, Master Bruce. The encrypted channels remain silent. No unusual activity detected within a five-mile radius of his last known location." Alfred's voice is clipped, controlled. He’s a rock, always, but I can see the tremor in his hands on the wheel. He cares about Dick, maybe even more than I do, and right now, that’s saying something. We’ve been running in circles, chasing shadows and dead ends. The rogues’ gallery is quiet, too quiet. They’re either celebrating or scared shitless, and neither option makes me feel any better. I replay the last time I saw him in my head. A flash of that infectious grin, a smart-assed comment about my brooding, and then…gone. Vanished into the labyrinthine guts of this city like he never existed. A ping from the Batcomputer rips me from my thoughts. Alfred glances at the display, his brow furrowing. "A new access point has been detected within Wayne Tower, Master Bruce. An attempt was made to breach your private files." Wayne Tower. My files. Someone wants something, and they’re bold enough to come right into my house to get it. "Can you trace it?" I ask, already reaching for the ignition override. "I am attempting to, but the signal is heavily encrypted, masked by multiple firewalls. It appears…familiar." Alfred's voice tightens, a thread of something akin to fear lacing his words. "Master Bruce…the encryption…it's utilizing a variant of the Robin protocol I designed myself…" My gut twists. Dick wouldn’t… he couldn’t. But the implication hangs heavy in the air, thick as the rain. We are pulling up to Wayne Tower, the gargoyles leering down like silent judges. Every instinct screams at me to tear through the front doors, to rip apart every floor until I find him and make whoever did this pay. But Alfred is right. This feels like a trap. Do I proceed with caution, analyzing the compromised data before rushing in? Or do I abandon the intel and confront the intruder directly?

I grit my teeth, the words a desperate shield against the gnawing fear. "Dick wouldn't betray me. It's a setup." Alfred's silence is a heavy weight. I grit my teeth, the words a desperate shield against the gnawing fear. "Dick wouldn't betray me. It's a setup." Alfred's silence is a heavy weight. He doesn't disagree, but I can see the doubt flicker in his eyes. The Robin protocol...it’s his creation, a digital fingerprint only Dick should possess. We burst through the revolving doors of Wayne Tower, me leading the charge, Alfred a step behind, his cane clicking against the polished marble. The lobby is deserted, the security desk unmanned. Too easy. The air hums with a low, almost imperceptible thrum, the building holding its breath. I activate my cowl’s thermal vision, painting the sterile environment in shades of red and blue. A faint heat signature pulses from the server room, deep within the building’s core. I bypass the elevator, opting for the stairs, taking them two at a time. Each footfall echoes in the unnatural stillness. As we reach the server room door, I punch in the override code, the panel flashing green. But the door remains locked, a secondary firewall engaged. Alfred frowns. "A physical lock. Primitive, yet effective." I draw a Batarang, its edge shimmering with ultrasonic resonance. I insert it into the locking mechanism, intending to vibrate the tumblers into disarray, but something is off. The metal feels…wrong. As the Batarang makes contact, a surge of energy courses through the tool, back up my arm, and into my chest. I stagger back, gasping for air, my vision blurring. Alfred steadies me, his face etched with concern. "Master Bruce! What happened?" "Energy dampener…built into the lock," I manage, my voice strained. "It's designed to incapacitate." My head throbs. This isn't just a break-in; it's a carefully orchestrated assault. Someone knows my weaknesses, my methods. Dick’s security protocols are designed to prevent me from forcibly entering this room. I'm being led, manipulated. And now, disoriented and vulnerable, I’m exactly where they want me. I stumble backwards, hitting the fire alarm. The sprinklers turn on, soaking me. As the sirens blare and the Tower’s emergency lights flare to life, I am sure that my failure has exposed Alfred to immediate danger. I look at Alfred, his face etched in worry and a determination he cannot hide. The intruder wants us. He wants to play cat and mouse, but I am the bat, and I prefer to go on the offensive.

´I know who betrayed me and why,´ I state, the words resonating with a false conviction. Alfred’s gaze sharpens, his expression unreadable behind the flickering emergency lights. He sees through my bluff immediately. I don’t know anything concrete, just fragments, whispers of suspicion swirling into a maelstrom of doubt. But I can’t let on. I can’t afford to show weakness, not now. The sprinklers continue to saturate the server room, the incessant drumming a counterpoint to the frantic pulse in my temples. ‘Then enlighten me, Master Bruce,´ Alfred replies, his voice measured. ‘Who is behind this, and what is their motive?’ My mind races, piecing together the disjointed puzzle. The Robin protocol, the energy dampener, the carefully orchestrated trap…it all points to someone with intimate knowledge of my operations, someone who understands Dick’s capabilities and my own vulnerabilities. Someone I trusted. But the answer feels…wrong. Like a phantom limb, tantalizingly close but ultimately out of reach. ‘It’s…complicated,’ I hedge, buying time. ‘There are…forces at play that you wouldn’t understand.’ The lie tastes like ash in my mouth. Alfred’s eyes narrow, a flicker of disappointment in their depths. He’s always been my moral compass, the steady hand guiding me through the darkness. But now, I’m steering us both into uncharted territory, driven by instinct and fueled by a desperate hope that I’m not leading us to our doom. I attempt to replay the evidence in my mind. The encrypted messages, the blocked network access, and the familiar scent from the assailant, but I can´t think straight. My body starts to convulse uncontrollably, falling to the floor, as a strange green foam emerges from my mouth. Before passing out, I realize that I don´t who did this, nor do I why, because the information that I thought I knew was nothing but a deception created by my enemies, who knew that I could not resist following a thread, even if it was fake. As my consciousness fades, the last thing I see is Alfred kneeling beside me, his face a mask of horror and the distinct, metallic taste of cyanide on my tongue.
