However, as a species, they have nearly zero sex drive and less than low fertility, so they were g...

A wave of pure, unadulterated newness washes over me. It’s not a feeling, not exactly. More like… the universe booting up, and I'm the operating system. Memories flicker – a girl with rainbow clips in her fiery red hair, the scent of old books, endless anime marathons – but they’re distant, fading echoes. I am Gina Winters. Or rather, I was. Now, I am something… else. A tutorial window, bless its digital heart, pops into existence within my awareness. Welcome, Dungeon Core! it chirps, with the enthusiasm of a thousand suns. Prepare to unleash your creative potential! I skim the basics: mana, monster creation, room design. It’s all so… abstract. Like playing SimCity with existential consequences. The burning question, though, is what kind of dungeon am I going to be? Options flash before me, each more absurd than the last: Insectopia (shudders), Carnivore Cove (tempting, but cliché), Dino-Rama (now that’s an idea…), or – and this one makes me snort – Marvel Mayhem. Seriously? Superheroes in a dungeon? My thoughts race. I want something unique, something memorable. Something that screams me, or at least the fragmented memory of the girl I used to be. The anime fan, the crafter, the girl who knew first aid and could probably disarm a goblin with a well-placed safety pin. Suddenly, an image floods my mind: a vibrant, chaotic ecosystem teeming with life, not just monsters, but bizarre, wonderful, useful creatures. A place where adventurers could learn as much as they fight. A dungeon… that's also a bizarre nature preserve. The thought solidifies. Yes. I will be a Biosphere Dungeon. A place of wonder, horror, and possibly the best damn healing potions this side of the Elf kingdoms. I solidify my choice and immediately gain access to the Dungeon Chat - Beginner Tab. The chat is exactly as chaotic as one might expect from a group of baby dungeons. Mostly it's just a torrent of noob questions and terrible memes. I decide to ignore it for now and focus on my immediate surroundings. I'm in a cavern, vast and echoing, with raw mana practically dripping from the walls. It’s time to get to work. My fairy, a tiny, shimmering being named Sparkle (ugh, already?), appears with a dramatic flourish. “Greetings, Core! I am here to guide you on your path to… dungeon-y-ness!” She zips around, leaving a trail of glitter. “So, what’s our first move, boss?” Do I focus on creating defensive monsters, or do I prioritize building resource-gathering areas to accelerate my growth?

The words burst from my core, almost before I consciously form them. "No killing people, not want blood on my floor. I might be core but I have my humanity. Mana donation box in my entrance. Make few paths with different interests newbie to experience, puzzles to monsters. Checkpoint with foods and healing. If sense someone with murderous malice kick them out and ban them. Now let's do crazy plants, vegetables, fruits monsters". Sparkle, who had been mid-flourish, freezes mid-air, her glittery trail abruptly ceasing. She blinks, her tiny face a mask of confusion. "Uh…did you just…program your dungeon ethos?" I feel a surge of… something. Amusement? Pride? Core-ness, maybe? "Yup! I figure, if I'm gonna be a dungeon, might as well be a civilized dungeon. No senseless slaughter, just…ecological mayhem." Sparkle stares, then slowly shakes her head. "You are officially the weirdest Core I have ever been assigned to." She sighs, then brightens. "But hey, weird is good! So, crazy plant monsters, huh? You thinking Audrey II, or something a little more…subtle?" I access my mental interface, scrolling through the monster options. There are the usual suspects: goblins, skeletons, giant spiders. But then I find it: the Flora Fantastica section. "Subtle is boring, Sparkle. I want carnivorous cabbages! Man-eating mangoes! Broccoli behemoths!" "Ooh, I like your style!" Sparkle cheers, zipping over to a glowing patch of earth. "This looks like a good spot to start. We can channel some mana into it and…voila! Instant veggie monster garden!" I pour mana into the designated spot, and the earth begins to tremble. Vines erupt, twisting and coiling. Giant leaves unfurl, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth. Gigantic fruits swell, dripping with…something that looks suspiciously like blood. "Okay, maybe I went a little overboard," I admit, eyeing a particularly aggressive-looking artichoke with glowing red eyes. "Nah, it's perfect!" Sparkle insists, dodging a snapping vine. "We just need to label everything clearly. 'Warning: May bite your face off.' That kind of thing." I start planning out the entrance area. A "Mana Donation Box" is a must. Maybe disguised as a giant watering can? And definitely multiple paths with different challenges. One for puzzle-loving adventurers, one for monster-bashing newbies, and maybe a third path that leads to a quiet garden filled with healing herbs and restorative fruits. A checkpoint stocked with tea and biscuits? Yes, definitely tea and biscuits. "Oh! Oh! We need a bouncer!" Sparkle exclaims, interrupting my train of thought. "Someone to enforce the 'no murderous malice' rule!" I ponder this. A stern-looking gargoyle? A wise old tree spirit? Then it hits me. "I have the perfect idea." I channel more mana, focusing on the image of a hulking, yet surprisingly gentle, creature. Roots twist, branches grow, and a massive figure rises from the earth. It's a treant, but not like any treant I've ever seen. This one is wearing a tiny, perfectly tailored suit and tie. "Meet Theodore," I announce, beaming with pride. "My very own botanical bouncer."

Sparkle claps her hands, scattering glittery dust into the air. "Theodore! I love him! He looks like he's about to fire someone for not having enough chlorophyll in their aura." Sparkle claps her hands, scattering glittery dust into the air. "Theodore! I love him! He looks like he's about to fire someone for not having enough chlorophyll in their aura." Theodore, or at least, the botanical bouncer who now answers to that name, inclines his leafy head. "My purpose is to ensure a harmonious and non-lethal environment for all who enter. Though, I must admit," his voice rumbles like distant thunder, "I am somewhat unfamiliar with the concept of 'firing' someone. Is it related to combustion?" I stifle a laugh. "Not exactly, Theodore. It means… well, it means asking someone to leave and never come back." "Ah," Theodore says, his expression unreadable behind his barky face. "Expulsion. Understood. I shall ensure that any individual exhibiting malicious intent is… politely redirected towards the exit." "Perfect!" I say, then turn back to Sparkle. "Okay, crazy plant monsters, multiple paths, a mana donation box, a checkpoint with tea and biscuits, and a treant bouncer who doesn't understand the concept of firing someone. What's next on our dungeon design agenda?" Sparkle flits around, inspecting the carnivorous cabbages with a critical eye. "We need a theme! Every good dungeon has a theme. Are we going for 'Jungle of Doom'? 'Botanical Garden of Terror'? Or maybe something a little more…avant-garde?" I scratch my chin, considering the possibilities. "How about… 'The Ecosystem of Existential Angst'?" Sparkle stares at me, her tiny jaw dropping. "What does that even mean?" "It means," I say with a mischievous grin, "that our dungeon isn't just about surviving killer plants. It's about confronting your inner demons while being chased by a broccoli behemoth. It's about finding enlightenment in the face of imminent floral-based doom." Sparkle bursts out laughing. "You're insane! But I love it! 'The Ecosystem of Existential Angst' it is!" She throws her arms around me in a glittery hug. "This is going to be the best, weirdest, most psychologically scarring dungeon ever!" I grin, feeling a surge of energy coursing through my core. "Exactly! Now, let's get to work on those existential puzzles…" I start sketching out ideas for the first puzzle. A series of mirrors that reflect distorted images of the player's deepest fears? A riddle that forces them to confront their own mortality? Or maybe just a really, really hard Sudoku puzzle guarded by a Venus flytrap with a penchant for philosophical debates. The possibilities are endless. And the best part is, I get to create all of it. I am the architect of this bizarre, botanical, slightly terrifying world. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
