The salt spray stings your face as you stand on the creaking docks of the U Street Wharf, Philadelphia, 1707. The air is thick with the stench of fish, tar, and something vaguely rotten. It's a far cry from the clean sea breeze your mother always spoke of. Seventeen years you’ve breathed this air, seventeen years you’ve watched ships sail in and out, each one a painful reminder of your missing father. Roderick Cunningham – or Vermood, as the locals call you, a mangled pronunciation of a half-remembered Dutch ancestor – that’s who you are. Your father, a pirate they say, though to you he was always just a merchant who sailed to the Middle East. It's been years since he left, promising riches and a swift return. Now, only silence echoes in the cramped fishing shack you share with your mother. She still mends nets, her eyes clouded with a hope you no longer possess. Today, that changes. Today, you find him. The "Sea Serpent," a dilapidated brigantine with more patches than sails, is your ticket out. You managed to secure a berth as a deckhand, your meager savings bartered for the chance to escape this wretched town. The captain, a gruff man named Silas Thorne, eyes you with suspicion, but he needs bodies, and you’re willing. A wave of dizziness hits you as you haul a thick rope, the world swaying in your vision. You lean against a barrel, trying to focus. It’s been three days since you’ve had anything but watered-down ale, a habit picked up far too young in the taverns that line the wharf. "Oi, Vermood! Lazy already?" Thorne barks, his breath reeking of rum. "Get that rope secured, or I'll have you scrubbing the bilge!" You straighten, gritting your teeth. Thorne is a brute, but he's also your way out. You pull harder on the rope, the coarse fibers biting into your calloused hands. As the "Sea Serpent" finally pulls away from the dock, a strange shimmering light erupts from the depths of the ship. A wave of heat washes over you, and the world blurs. Is this the curse that old Maggie whispered about down by the docks? A curse that clung to your father’s name? Do you fight the dizziness and investigate the source of the light, or do you try to convince yourself it’s just the rum and focus on keeping your footing on the swaying deck?

The bloodcurdling scream pierces the air from below deck, followed by a loud crash. Your heart leaps into your throat, a cold sweat breaking out on your skin. The other deckhands freeze, their eyes wide with fear. Even Captain Thorne seems momentarily stunned, his usual bluster replaced by a flicker of apprehension. He recovers quickly, bellowing, ´What in the devil was that?! O’Malley! Finn! Check it out!´ Two burly sailors, their faces pale, reluctantly descend the narrow staircase leading to the ship’s hold. The air hangs heavy with anticipation. Minutes stretch into an eternity, broken only by the creaking of the ship and the distant cries of seagulls. Then, O’Malley stumbles back on deck, his face ashen, his eyes wide with terror. He tries to speak, but only a strangled gasp escapes his lips. Thorne grabs him by the shoulders, shaking him roughly. ´Speak, you idiot! What did you see?´ O’Malley finally manages to croak out a few words, his voice trembling. ´Below…it’s…it’s gone!´ ´Gone? What’s gone?´ Thorne demands, his patience wearing thin. ´The cargo…the rum…it’s all…gone! And Finn…he’s…he’s…´ O’Malley trails off, unable to finish the sentence. Another sailor, a wiry young man named Thomas, pushes forward, his voice filled with dread. ´I heard…I heard voices down there, Captain. Whispering…like the dead.´ Thorne scoffs, but you can see the unease in his eyes. ´Nonsense! It’s just rats and the groaning of the ship.´ He glances around at the crew, his gaze lingering on you. ´Vermood! You’re young and quick. Go down there and see what’s really going on. And take this!´ He shoves a rusty cutlass into your hands. The metal is cold and heavy, and you grip it tightly, your knuckles white. You hesitate for a moment, your mind racing. What could have caused such terror? What happened to Finn? The whispers that Thomas mentioned send a chill down your spine. But you know you have no choice. Disobeying Thorne would mean certain punishment, and besides, a morbid curiosity gnaws at you. You take a deep breath and descend the creaking stairs into the darkness. The air below is thick with the smell of seawater and something else…something acrid and unfamiliar. As your eyes adjust to the gloom, you see the hold is indeed empty. The barrels of rum that had been stacked high are gone, vanished without a trace. And then you see him. Finn lies sprawled on the floor, his eyes wide and lifeless, a look of unimaginable horror frozen on his face. But it’s not the sight of Finn that makes your blood run cold. It’s what’s hovering above him: a shimmering, translucent figure, its eyes burning with an eerie blue light. It turns its gaze towards you and extends a spectral hand, beckoning you closer. Do you raise the cutlass in defiance, or do you succumb to the mesmerizing pull of the ethereal figure?

You lunge forward, slashing the cutlass towards the spectral figure. The blade passes right through it, offering no resistance. A wave of icy cold washes over you, leaving you breathless and shivering. The figure recoils slightly, its burning blue eyes widening in surprise. A voice, ancient and hollow, echoes in your mind. ´Intriguing…a mortal who dares to strike?´ The spectral hand remains outstretched, beckoning you still. Despite the fear that grips you, a strange curiosity compels you to look closer. The figure shimmers, its form flickering like a candle flame in the wind. You notice details you missed before: the tattered remnants of what appears to be a naval uniform, the long, flowing hair that seems to writhe with a life of its own, the sorrow etched deep into its ethereal features. Another voice echoes in your mind, fainter this time, laced with desperation. ´Help me…please…´ Suddenly, the ship lurches violently. A deafening crack splits the air, followed by a chorus of screams from above deck. The spectral figure turns its attention upwards, its eyes blazing with fury. ´They are not supposed to be here!´ it hisses, its voice filled with a chilling rage. It dissipates into a cloud of shimmering light, vanishing as quickly as it appeared. You are left alone in the darkness, the cutlass trembling in your hand. The ship groans again, the sound of splintering wood echoing through the hold. You stumble towards the stairs, your legs shaky, your mind reeling. As you reach the deck, you are met with a scene of utter chaos. The main mast has snapped in half, collapsing onto the deck in a tangle of ropes and sails. The crew is scrambling frantically, their faces etched with terror. Captain Thorne is shouting orders, his voice barely audible above the roar of the wind and waves. A monstrous storm has descended upon the ship, the sky a swirling vortex of black clouds. Lightning flashes illuminate the scene, revealing towering waves crashing against the hull. The 'Sea Serpent' is being tossed about like a toy in a bathtub. Thorne spots you and rushes over, his face contorted with a mixture of fear and anger. ´Vermood! What in God’s name was that commotion down there? And what’s happening to my ship?!´ Before you can answer, a massive wave crashes over the deck, sweeping away several sailors and sending you sprawling against the shattered remains of the mast. The world spins, and you feel yourself being dragged towards the churning water. As you struggle to stay afloat, you catch a glimpse of the spectral figure hovering above the ship, its eyes glowing with an eerie light. Is it responsible for this storm? And what does it want with you? You see a piece of driftwood floating nearby. Do you grab onto it and try to survive the storm, or do you attempt to communicate with the spectral figure, even as the ship threatens to break apart around you?
