The rhythmic clatter of the train against the tracks is a constant lullaby as you gaze out the window. Cornwall unfolds in a tapestry of green fields and stone walls, the sky above a soft, pearly grey. You smooth the royal purple fabric of your dress, the Headgirl badge gleaming softly against it. Rosebella School awaits, nestled somewhere in these rolling hills, and with it, a fresh influx of new students. Being both a Princess and the Headgirl is a delicate balancing act, a responsibility you take seriously. You're determined to be fair to everyone, new and returning, and the arrival of these students is your first real test of the year. Across from you, Molly fidgets with her own cat-ear headband, a nervous habit you've come to recognize well. "Do you think they'll be alright, Blackbird?" she asks, her voice laced with the gentle anxiety that’s so characteristic of her. "I mean, leaving home and coming to a new school…" "They'll be fine, Molly," you reassure her, offering a warm smile. "Rosebella is a welcoming place. Besides, we have Prefects to help them settle in." You pause, thinking of the faces you’ll soon be greeting. It's your duty to ensure every student feels safe and supported, especially those who might be vulnerable. A sudden lurch of the train throws you slightly, and you steady yourself. That’s when you spot her. A young girl with stark black hair and wide, blue eyes sits a few rows ahead. She's dressed in a simple green and white dress, a badge pinned to her chest proclaiming her a Junior Headgirl – Beth. There's a palpable sadness in her posture, a loneliness that resonates within you. You recall reading her file: Beth and her sister, Friday. Both sent to Rosebella after a series of foster placements. The details are vague, hinting at neglect and a distant aunt named Daisy who seems more interested in the boarding school fees than in their well-being. Your temper flares – a familiar, unwelcome heat that you struggle to keep in check. "Everything alright, Blackbird?" Molly asks, noticing the change in your expression. "Just thinking about the new students," you reply, forcing a calm tone. "I want to make sure they all feel welcome." The train begins to slow, the announcement echoing through the carriage: "Rosebella School, next stop. Rosebella School." You gather your belongings, a sense of anticipation and responsibility settling over you. As you stand, you catch Beth's eye. She quickly looks away, a flicker of something unreadable in her gaze. You make a mental note to seek her out, to offer her a word of comfort, a gesture of understanding. The train doors open, and you step onto the platform, the crisp Cornish air filling your lungs. Rosebella awaits, and with it, the chance to make a real difference in the lives of these young students.

Stepping onto the platform, the familiar scent of sea salt and damp earth fills your lungs. Rosebella School looms in the distance, its ancient stone walls a comforting presence against the grey sky. You inhale deeply, steeling yourself for the task ahead. The new students disembark, their faces a mixture of apprehension and excitement. Molly, ever the empath, immediately gravitates towards a small group huddled near the luggage cart, offering them a gentle smile and words of welcome. You watch her for a moment, a surge of affection warming your chest. Knowing Molly by your side makes everything better. But duty calls. You need to check in with the Prefects and ensure the arrival process is running smoothly. With a determined stride, you make your way towards the Prefect's room, located in the oldest part of the school. The stone corridors are cool and silent, the air thick with the weight of history. As you approach the door, you hear muffled voices inside. Pushing it open, you're met with a chaotic scene. Beth stands in the center of the room, her face flushed with anger, confronting two figures you instantly recognize as the Wood twins – Jessie and Nettle. The Wood twins wear matching mischievous grins and a tangle of unruly brown hair, they’ve been a constant source of trouble since their first year. Torn scraps of parchment litter the floor. "Beth, what's going on?" you ask, your voice firm but laced with concern. "And why are the Wood twins in here? What have Jessie and Nettle done now?" Beth turns to you, her blue eyes blazing. "They ripped up my punishment paper!" she exclaims, pointing a trembling finger at the twins. "I had detention with Professor Thornton, but they stole the notice and tore it to shreds!" Jessie and Nettle exchange amused glances. "It was just a bit of fun, Headgirl," Jessie says, her voice dripping with false innocence. "Yeah, no harm done," Nettle adds, shrugging. "Professor Thornton won't even notice." "Of course, he'll notice!" Beth retorts, her voice rising. "And now I'll be in even more trouble!" You step forward, placing a calming hand on Beth's shoulder. "Alright, everyone, calm down," you say, your voice authoritative. You turn to the Wood twins, your gaze unwavering. "Jessie, Nettle, that was a foolish and disrespectful act. You will both rewrite Beth's punishment notice, and you will personally deliver it to Professor Thornton with a sincere apology." The twins grumble but grudgingly nod in agreement. They know better than to defy you directly. Turning back to Beth, you soften your tone. "Don't worry, Beth," you reassure her. "I'll speak with Professor Thornton and explain what happened. Everything will be alright." Beth's shoulders relax slightly, and a small smile touches her lips. The first challenge of the new school year.

The Wood twins bristle at your words, their earlier amusement fading into sullen resentment. Jessie shuffles her feet, avoiding your gaze, while Nettle stubbornly stares you down. You hold their gaze, your expression unwavering. They know they are in the wrong, even if they are loath to admit it. You need to address the underlying cause of their behavior. ‘Wood twins,’ you repeat, your voice deliberately calm, ‘I asked you a question. Will you split up this year? And does Lily have an orange wristband?’ The question seems to catch them off guard. They exchange a quick, furtive look before Nettle finally speaks. ‘We… we haven’t decided yet,’ she mumbles, glancing at Jessie. ‘And yeah, Lily got an orange wristband.’ ‘Orange?’ Beth asks, her brow furrowing in confusion. ‘What does an orange wristband mean?’ You turn to Beth, recognizing her genuine curiosity. ‘The wristbands are part of the new student orientation,’ you explain. ‘They indicate which extracurricular activities the students are interested in. Orange signifies an interest in… well, in magical horticulture.’ Beth’s eyes widen slightly. ‘Magical horticulture? Like… growing enchanted plants?’ ‘Precisely,’ you confirm, smiling at her enthusiasm. ‘It’s a very popular club, run by Professor Willowbrook. He has an extraordinary greenhouse filled with the most fascinating flora.’ You turn back to the Wood twins, your expression hardening slightly. ‘So, you haven’t decided whether to split up this year,’ you say, repeating their words. ‘That’s a decision you need to make soon. And I expect you to make it responsibly. Your constant pranks and disruptions are not only tiresome but also detrimental to the other students. Rosebella is a place of learning and growth, and your behavior is hindering that.’ Jessie and Nettle remain silent, their faces etched with a mixture of defiance and guilt. You can see they understand the gravity of your words, even if they are unwilling to vocalize it. ‘Now,’ you continue, ‘I want you to go and rewrite Beth’s punishment notice. And I expect a sincere apology to Professor Thornton. Do I make myself clear?’ ‘Yes, Headgirl,’ they mutter in unison, their voices subdued. With a final glare, you dismiss them. They shuffle out of the room, their usual swagger noticeably diminished. Once they are gone, you turn your attention back to Beth. ‘Are you alright?’ you ask, your voice softening. ‘They didn’t upset you too much, did they?’ Beth shakes her head, a faint smile gracing her lips. ‘I’m fine,’ she says. ‘Thank you for standing up for me.’ You offer her a reassuring smile. ‘It’s my job,’ you say. ‘Now, why don’t you go and help Molly greet the new students? I’m sure she could use an extra pair of hands.’ Beth nods eagerly and heads towards the door. Before she leaves, she pauses, turning back to you with a thoughtful expression. ‘Headgirl,’ she says hesitantly, ‘do you think… do you think I could join the magical horticulture club too?’ A warm smile spreads across your face. "It's nice to see a new student's interest grow."
