The humid air hangs thick and heavy as you awaken. Disoriented, you find yourself nestled amidst the colossal, root-choked trees of the Abyss's first layer. Gone is the familiar, grimy metallic tang of Rain World; replaced by the fecund, earthy scent of decaying vegetation and unknown flora. Your black fur, usually slicked with precipitation, is now strangely dry, almost brittle, under the dappled sunlight filtering through the dense canopy. Panic claws at you – a sensation disturbingly similar to the sharpened points you possess, an anomaly that separates you from the common slugcats. You flex your paws, digging into the soft earth. Yes, the claws are still there, as are the subtle ridges along your spine – remnants of some forgotten evolution that mark you as something…more. This isn't your territory. The crimson threat-skulls are absent, and the burrows here smell not of your making. Fear, unfamiliar and primal, prickles at your senses. This world hums with a different kind of danger, one that isn't just a cycle of predator and prey. A rustling in the undergrowth snaps you back to the present. Your eyes, adapted to the dim light of abandoned structures, pierce the shadows. A creature emerges: small, furry, with oversized ears and luminous eyes. A narehate – a Hollow. It tilts its head, regarding you with an unsettling curiosity. It speaks, its voice a high-pitched chime, "A visitor? The Abyss rarely gifts us with new…specimens." Its words are laced with an unnerving sweetness that grates against your instincts. "Are you lost, little shadow?" Your throat constricts. You haven't spoken in…you can't remember when. Communication in Rain World was a dance of gestures, of desperate survival. But this…this is something else. The Hollow seems genuinely interested, not predatory. You manage a hesitant gesture, a tilt of your head mimicking its own. You’re an apex predator in your own world, a master of adaptation. But here, in this alien place, you are an anomaly, a stranger. The Hollow takes a step closer. "Do not be afraid. The Abyss takes care of its own. Perhaps…I can guide you? Show you the wonders – and the dangers – that lie ahead?" It pauses, its luminous eyes gleaming. "But first, little shadow, tell me your name."

You clutch your head, the familiar sensation of spores erupting at the edges of your fur a small comfort amidst this alien landscape. You clutch your head, the familiar sensation of spores erupting at the edges of your fur a small comfort amidst this alien landscape. It is your defense, your power – a tangible link to the world you knew. The spores settle, a visible cloud of reassurance. But the Hollow remains, its luminous eyes now wide with something akin to alarm. It senses the danger radiating from you, an instinct honed by its own survival in the Abyss. You don´t hesitate. The feeling of being threatened is too overwhelming, too reminiscent of the relentless downpour and predatory jaws of Rain World. Your hand, or rather, paw, instinctively reaches into the small pouch hidden beneath your fur, retrieving the crimson mushroom. It's a volatile creation, one born of desperation and a need to mark territory – to keep the scavengers away. You hurl it. The world explodes. Not with fire, but with a concussive wave of force that throws you backwards, despite bracing for it. The air crackles with displaced energy. The trees surrounding you groan under the sudden pressure, their leaves stripped bare. The mushroom wasn't just explosive; it was a concentrated burst of kinetic energy, designed to flatten anything within its radius. The Hollow is gone. The only evidence of its presence is a faint shimmer in the air, a distortion where it once stood. Whether it teleported, shielded itself, or was simply obliterated, you can’t tell. The immediate area is a flattened wasteland. The scent of ozone stings your nostrils. The explosion also seems to have attracted attention. A low growl echoes through the trees. It’s guttural, powerful, and definitely not the sound of any creature you know. You scramble to your feet, adrenaline coursing through you. Your vision sharpens, your senses heightened. The spores clinging to you pulse with a faint, internal light, illuminating the devastation. You catch a glimpse of movement – a hulking shadow shifting through the dense foliage. It's large, quadrupedal, and its eyes glow with the same unsettling luminescence as the Hollow. You have made a mistake. This explosion wasn't just a defensive measure; it was an invitation. You have announced your presence to something far more dangerous than a curious narehate. The growl intensifies, closer now, and you catch a whiff of its scent – a musky, predatory odor that sends a shiver down your spine. This is a hunter, and you are now its prey. The ground trembles. You run.
3Chapter 3▾
You scoff, the sound swallowed by the dense foliage. Why are you running? Fear is a survival mechanism, but it shouldn't dictate your actions. Vultures, scavengers though they may be, are formidable foes in Rain World. This…this is an unknown quantity. But unknowns are merely challenges to be overcome. You stop, turning to face the source...
You stop, turning to face the source of the growl. The hulking shadow is closer now, its form resolving into something vaguely canine, but far larger and more menacing than any dog. Its fur is thick and matted, its teeth elongated into saber-like fangs, and its eyes burn with an unnerving intelligence. You reach for another mushroom, this one specifically designed for chaos. It's a volatile mix of fungal spores and concentrated energy, guaranteed to create maximum destruction. You relish the feeling of power as you cradle it in your paw. "Heh…this can’t be harder," you mutter to yourself, a predatory grin spreading across your face. You hurl the mushroom with practiced ease. This time, the explosion is immediate and catastrophic. The air shimmers and warps, the very fabric of reality seeming to fray at the edges. A shockwave of pure, unadulterated chaos rips through the forest, tearing trees from their roots and sending debris flying in every direction. The ground beneath you trembles violently. You brace yourself, drawing strength from the destruction, feeding on the energy of the explosion. This is your element – the raw, untamed power of chaos. The canine creature is caught in the blast radius. It howls in pain and fury, its body thrown backwards by the force of the explosion. But it's not dead. Not even close. It claws its way back to its feet, its fur singed and smoking, its eyes blazing with an even more intense hatred. It snarls, a sound that seems to tear through the very air. You can sense its rage, its determination to tear you apart. But there is something else too, a flicker of something you recognize – respect. It has faced your power and survived. The creature takes a step forward, then another. It´s wounded, but it´s still coming. The spores around you glow brighter, anticipating another attack. The air crackles with potential energy. This is far from over. The true hunt begins now.
