The bell rings, a shrill, almost mocking sound that echoes through the unfamiliar hallways of Disney High. I clutch my schedule tighter, the paper crinkling slightly under my sweaty palms. Eighteen, new in town, and thrust into a world that feels plucked straight from a cartoon – literally. My family relocated because of Dad's new job, but the new town seems strange, like it has secrets it wants to keep. Finding my first class proves to be an adventure in itself. Lockers slam, conversations overlap, and the sheer variety of faces is overwhelming. And it's not just the typical high school crowd. No, here, the students look strangely familiar. A girl with fiery red hair and an unmistakable seashell bra peeks out from under her jacket laughs with a tiny, winged blonde. A guy with rippling muscles and a heroic grin flexes as he jokes with a boy with messy brown hair. I finally stumble into History, heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. The classroom is… well, normal enough. Desks in neat rows, a whiteboard at the front, and Mr. Peabody, our teacher, droning on about something or other. I find an empty seat in the back row and try to blend in. But blending in seems impossible when the girl with the red hair – Ariel, as I overhear someone call her – is in the same class. And Tinkerbell. And Hercules, who looks even more impressive in person. My younger sibling, who also got enrolled to their new school with Mowgli and Olaf, is probably having an even weirder day than me. The class crawls by at a snail's pace. I try to focus on Mr. Peabody's lecture, but my mind keeps drifting. I wonder what it's like to actually know these characters, to interact with them on a daily basis. Do they know they're… well, them? And more importantly, how am I supposed to navigate this bizarre new reality? As the bell rings again, signaling the end of class, I gather my things quickly, eager to escape the surreal atmosphere. But before I can make my escape, a voice calls out, "Hey, you're new here, right?" I turn to see Ariel smiling at me, her bright blue eyes sparkling. "I'm Ariel," she says, extending a hand. "Welcome to Disney High! This place is a trip, but it's never boring." Before I can respond, Hercules approaches from the other side. "Hey! I'm Herc! You look like you could use some new friends, so want to hang out after school?" He claps me on the back, nearly sending me sprawling. Ariel smiles again. "Or," she says, "you could come with me to the beach. I know the best spot." I freeze. An invitation from Ariel and Hercules on my very first day. This is it. The moment where I decide what kind of high school experience I'm going to have. Do I embrace the magic and mystery of this place, or do I try to cling to some semblance of normalcy? More importantly: how can I become popular?

My mind races, a whirlwind of conflicting desires. The allure of the beach with Ariel, the promise of adventure and maybe even a glimpse into her world under the sea, is strong. My mind races, a whirlwind of conflicting desires. The allure of the beach with Ariel, the promise of adventure and maybe even a glimpse into her world under the sea, is strong. But Hercules… hanging out with the Hercules would be legendary. My popularity would skyrocket. I need to find a way to make both of these work so I say, "Both sound amazing! But I have training in the afternoon. How about we reschedule?". Ariel´s face falls ever so slightly, a flicker of disappointment that I almost miss. But Hercules, ever the optimist, claps me on the back again, even harder this time. "No problem, new kid! We can reschedule it for the evening, " he said, "How about 7 p.m.? We could hit up the arcade, and I'll buy the snacks." I suppress the urge to fist-pump. The arcade with Hercules. It is perfect! "Sounds amazing!" I replied. Ariel perks up again, her smile returning. "Well then, I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" she said, "How about the same time, right after school? We can still hit the beach, I promise it will be fun!" My mind spins. "Perfect! It´s a date," I said, perhaps a little too enthusiastically. A date with Ariel and Hercules, on the same day? I've set the bar high, and I have to make it perfect. I nod to both of them, grab my bag, and practically flee the classroom. The hallways are still crowded, but I navigate them with a newfound sense of purpose. As I walk into the parking lot, I see my family´s minivan parked in its usual spot. I spot my younger sibling leaning against the car, chatting with Mowgli and Olaf. My sibling waves excitedly when they see me, and I force a smile. I can't let them see how overwhelmed I am. As I approach, I overhear Mowgli talking about some adventure in the jungle, and Olaf is excitedly describing the sensation of warm hugs. I can't help but smile. Even in this crazy world, there's still room for simple joys. I climb into the minivan and buckle my seatbelt, trying to catch my breath. "So, how was your first day?" My sibling asks, their eyes sparkling with curiosity. "It was… interesting," I reply, carefully avoiding details. I don't want to overwhelm them with the full extent of the Disney-fied reality we now inhabit. As we drive home, my mind is already racing, trying to plan my strategy. I only have one afternoon to prepare for my hangout with Hercules and Ariel. I need to research the best arcade games, find out Ariel's favorite snacks, and come up with conversation topics that will impress them both. I also need to figure out how to balance my desire for popularity with the genuine connection I feel with these characters. Can I be popular and still be true to myself? Only time will tell. And I have the feeling this is going to be a very wild ride.

The minivan rumbles into the driveway, and I practically leap out, eager to escape the confines of the car and begin my preparations. The minivan rumbles into the driveway, and I practically leap out, eager to escape the confines of the car and begin my preparations. As I step onto the porch, I turn to my mom, who is unloading groceries from the trunk. ´Mom,´ I say, trying to sound casual, ´don´t you find it strange my brother was just hanging out with a talking SNOWMAN!😮´ My mom sighs, a familiar expression of weary resignation crossing her face. ´Honey, after the day I´ve had, nothing surprises me anymore,´ she says, grabbing a bag of groceries. ´Besides, it´s Disney High. I signed the papers. Did you read the fine print?´ I frown. I was too excited about the move to even bother reading any papers, ´Well, no. What did it say?´ I asked her. She shrugs, heading towards the door. ´Something about accepting the inherent strangeness of the universe and not questioning the talking snowmen. Also about liability waivers for dragon-related incidents. Just go and be a teenager, okay? Just make sure your brother is safe,´ she calls over her shoulder as she disappears into the house. I stare after her, my jaw slack. Dragon-related incidents? This is even more intense than I initially thought. I head into the house, the scent of freshly baked cookies wafting from the kitchen. My younger sibling is already at the table, demolishing a plate of cookies while regaling Dad with tales of Mowgli's jungle adventures. Dad is listening intently, his eyes wide with a mixture of amusement and disbelief. I snag a cookie and retreat to my room, determined to focus on the task at hand. First things first: the arcade. I pull out my phone and start searching for "best arcade games for impressing Hercules." The results are… overwhelming. Racing games seem like a safe bet, but I also need something with a competitive edge. Maybe Dance Dance Revolution? No, too risky. I´m not sure if Hercule´s godly reflexes apply to dancing. I then search for tips on "Ariel's favorite things." This proves to be even more challenging. The internet is filled with conflicting information, ranging from seashells and coral to human artifacts and pop music. I decide to go with a classic: chocolate. Everyone loves chocolate, right? With the clock ticking, I throw on my most stylish (but comfortable) clothes, grab my backpack, and head downstairs. My sibling looks up from their plate of cookies, their eyes filled with curiosity. ´Where are you going?´ they ask. ´Out,´ I reply vaguely. ´Just… out.´ I escape before they can ask any more questions. As I walk towards the bus stop, my phone buzzes. It´s a text from Hercules: "Yo! You ready to crush some high scores?" A surge of nervous energy courses through me. This is it. Time to put my plan into action and make a great impression. The bus arrives, and I hop on, my mind racing with possibilities. Will I win Hercules' approval? Will Ariel be impressed by my knowledge of marine biology? And most importantly, can I navigate this crazy world of Disney High and achieve my goal of popularity?
