Dust and the stench of decay fill my nostrils as I cough, struggling to sit up. Around me, the shattered remains of what was once my team lie scattered across the cavern floor. Giant spider-like creatures, their fangs dripping with venom, had ambushed us. We never stood a chance. We were overwhelmed. I’m Mawl, or at least, I was Mawl. "The Weakest Link," they called me back at the guild. Now, staring at the carnage, I wonder if they were right. Ten years. Ten years since the rifts opened, connecting our world to these monster-infested hellholes. Ten years of struggling, scraping by, watching stronger hunters rise while I remained at the bottom. Suddenly, a screen flickers into existence before my eyes, a cold, blue light cutting through the gloom. Words appear, stark and impossible: [SYSTEM ACTIVATED] [HOST SELECTED: MAWL] [BEGINNING INTEGRATION] A jolt of energy surges through me, not painful, but… clarifying. It's as if a fog lifts from my mind, revealing pathways and possibilities I never knew existed. Stats, skills, inventories – data floods my consciousness. I am no longer just Mawl, the weakling hunter. I am a Player, chosen by a system I don’t understand, but one that promises power. The blue screen shifts again: [OBJECTIVE: SURVIVE] [REWARD: BASIC STAT BOOST] Survive? Looking around at the corpses of my comrades, the echoing skitter of unseen horrors deeper in the cavern, "survive" seems like a monumental task. Yet, something has changed. A flicker of hope ignites within me, fueled by the System's power thrumming beneath my skin. I notice a faint golden light emanating from my chest. Pulling open the tattered remains of my armor, I see a symbol glowing softly against my skin – a stylized crown radiating holy light. The powers of a Holy Monarch, the System whispers in my mind. A class, a path, a destiny. One of the giant spiders stirs, clicking its mandibles. It survived the initial onslaught. Its many eyes focus on me, and it begins to advance. Fear pricks at me, but it is different now, tempered by something new: anticipation. This is no longer just about survival. This is about opportunity. This is about proving them wrong. The System flashes a message: [SKILL AVAILABLE: DIVINE TOUCH] [COST: 10 MP] MP? Mana points, the system clarifies. A resource I apparently now possess. I take a deep breath, focusing on the golden light on my chest, channeling the energy the system has given me. I reach out my hand towards the approaching spider. The cavern air crackles with unseen energy.

As the spider lunges, its fangs dripping venom inches from my face, I unleash Divine Touch. The golden light erupts from my palm, bathing the monstrous creature in holy radiance. It recoils, a high-pitched screech tearing from its throat – a sound of pure agony and disbelief. The light intensifies, searing away the shadows that cling to the cavern walls, revealing the grotesque details of the spider's chitinous armor and multifaceted eyes. The effect is immediate, devastating. The spider begins to glow from the inside out, its toxins, the very essence of its being, undergoing a violent purification. The venom that once dripped menacingly now sizzles and evaporates in a cloud of white steam. Its armored carapace cracks and splinters, revealing the soft, pulpy flesh beneath, now burning with the intensity of a small sun. The spider thrashes wildly, its many legs scrabbling against the cavern floor, desperate to escape the divine fire that consumes it. But there is no escape. The light holds it captive, a beacon of righteous fury in the heart of this dark place. The stench of decay is replaced by the acrid smell of burning flesh and ozone. Within seconds, the creature is reduced to a smoldering husk. Its body collapses into a pile of ash, leaving behind only a faint, lingering scent of holiness. The sudden silence is deafening. I stand there, panting, my hand still outstretched, the golden light fading from my fingertips. The system alerts flicker in my vision. [ENEMY ELIMINATED] [EXPERIENCE GAINED: 25] [LEVEL UP!] [STAT POINTS AVAILABLE: 5] A wave of energy washes over me, invigorating my weary muscles, sharpening my senses. The System offers me a window to allocate my new stat points. Strength, Dexterity, Vitality, Intelligence, Wisdom. The choices swim before my eyes. I need to be stronger, faster, more resilient. But another message catches my attention, a smaller notification tucked away at the corner of my vision: [HIDDEN QUEST TRIGGERED: AVENGE THE FALLEN] [REWARD: UNKNOWN] Avenge the fallen. My team. A surge of grief and anger rises within me, eclipsing the exhilaration of my newfound power. This wasn't just some random encounter. This was an ambush, a deliberate act. Someone, something, orchestrated this. I clench my fist, the lingering embers of Divine Touch dancing across my skin. The System has given me power, but it has also given me a purpose. I will avenge my team. I will hunt down those responsible for their deaths. I will become strong enough to ensure that no one else suffers the same fate. Turning my back on the ashes of the spider, I venture deeper into the cavern, the blue light of the System illuminating my path. The air grows colder, the shadows deeper. I can feel eyes watching me, unseen predators lurking just beyond the reach of the light. I don't care. I am no longer the weakest link. I am Mawl, the Holy Monarch, and I have a score to settle.

I grip the hilt of the long sword, the cold steel a familiar comfort in my hand. It's heavier than I remember, or perhaps I am simply stronger now, imbued with the System's power. This blade belonged to Torvin, our team's warrior. He always kept it sharp, honed to a razor's edge. I owe him more than just a fight; I owe him justice. With my left hand, I unleash another burst of Divine Touch, not as a weapon, but as a beacon. The holy light floods the cavern, banishing the oppressive shadows and revealing the hidden eyes that had been watching me. They belong to more of those spiders, dozens of them, clinging to the walls and ceiling, their multifaceted eyes gleaming with predatory hunger. But there's something else too. Smaller creatures, rat-like but with razor-sharp claws, scurry in the darkness at the edges of the light. They are goblins, scavengers and ambushers, drawn by the scent of blood and death. They are many, far more than we faced before. But I am not the same Mawl who cowered in fear just moments ago. The System has awakened something within me, a primal instinct for survival and a burning desire for vengeance. I raise the long sword high above my head, the blade glinting in the holy light. A guttural yell tears from my throat, a defiant roar that echoes through the cavern. "Come on!" I bellow, "Come and face your doom!" The spiders respond instantly, dropping from the walls and ceiling, their fangs bared, their legs a blur of motion. The goblins, emboldened by their numbers, surge forward from the shadows, their claws extended, their eyes burning with malice. They swarm me, a tide of teeth and claws and venom. I meet their charge head-on, the long sword a whirlwind of steel. I cut down the first spider that reaches me, its head cleaving in two with a sickening crunch. I pivot, deflecting a goblin's claws with the flat of my blade, then driving the point of the sword into its chest. The creatures fall before me, but more keep coming, a relentless wave of bodies. I fight with a ferocity I never knew I possessed. The System feeds me information, highlighting weak points, predicting enemy movements. I dance between attacks, parrying blows, and delivering killing strikes with ruthless efficiency. The long sword becomes an extension of my arm, a conduit for my rage and my newfound power. Yet, the sheer number of enemies begins to wear me down. My muscles burn, my breath comes in ragged gasps. The spiders' venom stings where their fangs have grazed my armor, and the goblins' claws tear at my flesh. I need a new strategy. I need to use the environment to my advantage. My eyes dart around the cavern, searching for anything that can give me an edge. And then I see it: a narrow passage leading deeper into the darkness, a bottleneck where I can funnel the enemy and thin their ranks. With a desperate yell, I shove through the throng of creatures, hacking and slashing a path towards the passage. The spiders and goblins pursue me relentlessly, their hunger for blood undiminished. I can feel their breath on my neck, their claws tearing at my heels. But I am faster now, stronger, more determined. I reach the passage and dive through, turning to face my pursuers. The battle is far from over, but now, at least, I have a fighting chance.
