The humid air hangs heavy around me as I kneel beside Katara, her healing water glowing softly on the angry burn marring my chest. Sokka fusses nearby, his usual bravado replaced with a worried frown. Toph stands a little apart, sensing the tremors of the earth, the residual energy of Azula's attack still crackling in the ground. Aang, his young face etched with concern, hovers, unsure how to help. "It's... it's not healing as quickly as it should," Katara murmurs, her brow furrowed. I try to shrug, but the pain flares, a hot, insistent reminder of my failure. "I'm fine," I grit out, the lie feeling thin even to my own ears. The battle against Azula blurs in my memory: the searing blue flames, the earth shattering beneath our feet, and the moment when Azula's lightning arced towards Aang, and I threw myself in the way. A foolish, impulsive act—one that nearly cost me everything. I cough, the metallic tang of blood coating my tongue. That's when it happens. A jolt, not of pain, but of something else entirely, something ancient and alien, rips through me. Images flood my mind: cobblestone streets slick with rain, the opulent gleam of a gilded cage, the chilling echo of laughter in the dark. Faces flash: a pale elf with raven hair and a cruel smile, a tiefling with eyes like molten gold, a gnome whose inventions always seemed to explode. Astarion. His name whispers in my mind, a phantom echo of a life I never lived, yet somehow remember with agonizing clarity. The world swims. I stumble to my feet, pushing past Katara's concerned hands. "I need... air," I manage, my voice sounding strange, distant. I stumble into the relative darkness of the ancient forest, the air growing colder. My skin crawls, an unfamiliar sensitivity prickling beneath the scar on my face. The scent of pine needles and damp earth overwhelms me, yet beneath it, I detect a fainter, more insistent aroma: the coppery, intoxicating scent of blood. Panic claws at my throat. What is happening to me? As the sun dips below the horizon, casting long, skeletal shadows through the trees, the transformation begins. It's subtle at first: a tingling in my fingertips, a sharpening of my senses. Then, a more profound shift: my teeth lengthen, my skin tightens, and my vision sharpens with deadly precision. The world transforms around me, the familiar landscape rendered in stark, predatory detail. I raise a trembling hand to my face, feeling the unfamiliar contours of my cheekbones, the slight curve of my newly elongated ears. My reflection stares back at me from a nearby stream: a stranger with stark white hair, crimson eyes, and a predatory hunger burning in his gaze. Astarion is awake. I choke back a sob, the sound a guttural rasp in the twilight air. How can I explain this? How can I face Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, even Jet, knowing what I have become? Speaking of Jet… I can feel his energy nearby. The warmth of Agni's blessing radiating from him like a miniature sun. He's awake, moving through the trees, drawn to my distress like a moth to a flame. He's getting closer.

I spring into the canopy, my enhanced vampire agility making the ascent effortless. The branches, slick with evening dew, offer no resistance as I weave through them, seeking the deepest shadows. The forest floor shrinks below, the worried faces of my friends fading into indistinct blurs. From my hidden perch, I peer through the leaves, watching Jet as he enters the small clearing where I stood moments before. He scans the ground, his brow furrowed in concern. The golden streak in his dark hair gleams in the fading light, a beacon of warmth in the gathering gloom. He calls out my name, his voice laced with worry. ´Zuko? Where are you? Are you alright?´ I resist the urge to answer, to reassure him that I’m fine, even though the lie would taste like ash in my mouth. Instead, I remain silent, observing him, trying to gauge his reaction. He pauses, his head tilting slightly, as if he's listening for something beyond the reach of human hearing. His eyes, usually so bright and full of fire, are clouded with a deep, unsettling sadness. He knows something is wrong. He takes a tentative step forward, then another, his gaze sweeping across the trees. He smells the air, his nostrils flaring slightly, as if he is trying to catch a scent. I am sure he smells the bloodlust radiating from me like a heat wave. Agni´s blessing seems to pulse around him, a protective aura against the darkness that now clings to me. Does he sense the change in me? Does he recognize the monster I’ve become? I watch as he kneels, picking up a fallen leaf, crushing it in his hand. The action seems almost ritualistic, a grounding gesture in the face of rising panic. He closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, and when he opens them, his expression has shifted. The worry is still there, but it’s tempered with a resolute determination. He speaks again, his voice louder this time, carrying through the twilight air. ´Zuko, I know you’re there. You don’t have to hide. Whatever it is, we can face it together.´ My heart aches at his words. He has always been there for me, a steadfast friend in a world of shifting loyalties and betrayals. But can he accept this? Can he stand by me now that I am something… else? I remain hidden, torn between the desperate need for connection and the fear of rejection. The silence stretches between us, thick and heavy with unspoken emotions. Finally, Jet turns and walks away, his shoulders slumped with defeat. But as he disappears into the trees, I notice something: he doesn’t head back towards the others. Instead, he moves deeper into the forest, following the faint, almost imperceptible trail I left behind. He´s not giving up. He´s coming after me. And in that moment, I know I can’t hide forever. I need to decide what to do, and fast. My thirst is growing, my fangs yearn for the taste of something warm, something alive. Do I run? Or do I face him, and risk shattering everything we have?

My voice, raspy and unfamiliar, cuts through the silence. ´I’ll explain, but please give me an hour. We’ll meet back here… please, Jet?´ I wait, my senses straining, listening for any sign of his reaction. The forest holds its breath, the only sound the rustling of leaves in the gentle breeze. Then, a soft reply, barely audible. ´An hour....

´An hour. I’ll be here.´ Relief washes over me, a fleeting wave in the turbulent sea of my emotions. He trusts me. He’s giving me a chance. But the clock is ticking. I descend from the trees, landing silently on the forest floor. The need to hunt, to feed, burns within me, a primal instinct threatening to overwhelm my control. I turn away from the clearing, away from the spot where Jet will be waiting, and disappear into the deeper woods. The hunt is a blur of heightened senses and ruthless efficiency. I stalk through the undergrowth, my vision piercing the darkness, my hearing picking up the faintest rustle of movement. A small deer, caught unaware, becomes my prey. I strike with swift, decisive speed, the kill clean and mercifully quick. The taste of blood is intoxicating, a symphony of iron and life that courses through my veins, easing the gnawing hunger. But even as I feed, the memories of Astarion resurface, unwelcome and intrusive. Centuries of existence, a tapestry woven with cruelty, manipulation, and fleeting moments of tenderness. The faces of past lovers, their laughter and tears, their betrayals and their devotion, flash before my eyes. I push them away, focusing on the present, on the task at hand. I need to control this, to integrate these memories into my own, to find a way to reconcile the monster I was with the man I am trying to be. The hour passes quickly. I cleanse myself in a nearby stream, scrubbing away the blood and grime, trying to wash away the stain of my darker self. When I return to the clearing, Jet is already there, sitting on a fallen log, his face etched with a mixture of apprehension and unwavering resolve. He stands as I approach, his eyes searching mine, looking for answers. The air crackles with unspoken questions, with the weight of the secrets I am about to reveal. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for the confession that could change everything between us. ´Jet, there’s something you need to know,´ I begin, my voice trembling slightly. ´About what happened to me after the battle… about what I am now.´ I meet his gaze, bracing myself for the worst. The sun has now completely set, and I can feel my fangs growing, the need to explain myself, my vampire side, is growing stronger and stronger.
