The fluorescent lights of the Superhero Dispatch Network hum above you, casting a sterile glow on the chaotic bullpen. Desks are crammed together like puzzle pieces, each adorned with bobbleheads and half-empty energy drink cans.
Story context
World description
Dispatch is set in an alternate Los Angeles where super-powers — and consequently superheroes and supervillains — are commonplace and thus have divided society between "supers" (those born with powers such as flight and invisibility or born with a different appearance) and "normies" (those devoid of superpowers). While there are independent superheroes, several of them work for the Superhero Dispatch Network (SDN), which provi...
Initial situation
hero Robert Robertson III / Mecha Man attempts to locate his father's killer, supervillain Shroud, but is lured into a trap by Shroud's gang, the Red Ring. Robert narrowly escapes, only to realize a bomb was placed on his mech suit. He survives, but the suit is heavily damaged and put out of commission. After announcing his retirement and failing to stop a robbery on his own, Robert is approached by the superhero Blonde Blazer...

The fluorescent lights of the Superhero Dispatch Network hum above you, casting a sterile glow on the chaotic bullpen. Desks are crammed together like puzzle pieces, each adorned with bobbleheads and half-empty energy drink cans. You sit at your assigned station, a worn swivel chair creaking beneath your weight. It's your first day, and the air is thick with the nervous energy of a man trying to disappear. Your eyes scan the faces around you: overworked dispatchers barking into headsets, their voices a blur of emergency codes and frantic requests. A collage of city maps and emergency protocols plaster the walls, a stark reminder of the constant crises plaguing this alternate Los Angeles. A Los Angeles where the superhuman is mundane, and villains are as common as smog. Chase, your old friend, shuffles over, his aged face a roadmap of wrinkles. Despite being only thirty-nine, his speedster days have left him looking like he's knocking on death's door. He slaps a styrofoam cup on your desk. "Coffee," he rasps, his voice surprisingly strong. "Liquid courage. You'll need it." You take a tentative sip. It tastes like burnt rubber and regret. "Thanks, Chase." "Don't mention it. Just try not to screw up too badly. The Z-Team's a handful, even for seasoned dispatchers." The Z-Team. Your team. Reformed supervillains, or so SDN claims. You glance at their dossiers on your monitor. Flambae, the pyrokinetic with a penchant for dramatic entrances. Invisigal, the rebellious asthmatic. Golem, a moody magical construct. A rogues' gallery of misfits and mayhem, and you're supposed to manage them. A red alert blares across your screen. Bank robbery in progress, downtown. Suspects: enhanced strength and teleportation. Your fingers hover over the dispatch button. This is it. Time to play hero… or at least, pretend to. "Alright, Z-Team," you mutter under your breath, your voice trembling slightly. "Let's see what you've got." You patch the alert through to their comms, heart pounding against your ribs. Static crackles, followed by a chorus of groans and sarcastic replies. "Ugh, a bank robbery? Really? Couldn't we get something more exciting?" That's Invisigal, her voice laced with teenage angst. Flambae chimes in, "Yeah, I'm trying to perfect my crème brûlée recipe here. This better be worth my time." You grit your teeth, fighting the urge to slam your head against the desk. "This is a priority one situation. Civilians are in danger. Move out, now!" Silence. Then, a deep, gravelly voice. "Fine. But if my nap gets ruined, someone's paying for it." Golem. You lean back in your chair, a wave of exhaustion washing over you. This is going to be a long day. But somewhere beneath the anxiety and self-doubt, a flicker of something else sparks to life. A sense of purpose, maybe? Or just the thrill of the unknown. The comms crackle again. "Uh, Dispatch? We have a problem..." It's Waterboy, the one member of z-team that isn't a reformed villain, his voice high-pitched and frantic. "The teleporting guy just opened a portal... and something big just came out." You straighten up, your senses on high alert. "Report. What came out of the portal?" Waterboy's voice trembles. "I... I don't know. But it looks hungry."
2Chapter 2▾
Adrenaline courses through your veins as Waterboy's panicked words sink in. "Hungry" is not a descriptor you want to hear when dealing with interdimensional entities. "Waterboy, can you describe the creature?" you demand, your voice surprisingly steady despite the chaos swirling inside you. "Size, shape, anything!" "It's... big," he sta...
"Size, shape, anything!" "It's... big," he stammers. "Real big. Like, bigger than Golem big. And it's got... teeth. Lots of them. And claws... oh god, the claws..." Invisigal's voice cuts through the noise. "Well, this is just great. A freakin' monster. Can't we ever get a normal bank robbery?" "Invisigal, focus!" you snap. "Can you get a visual? What's the situation inside the bank?" "On it, on it," she mutters. A moment later, she reports, "Okay, I'm inside. The teleporting guy and his buddy are still trying to grab cash, but they look just as freaked out as everyone else. The big thing is... messing stuff up. Tearing down walls, eating ATMs... you know, the usual monster stuff." "Flambae, Golem, engage the creature. Waterboy, assist in evacuating civilians. Invisigal, keep an eye on the robbers and make sure they don't escape in the confusion." You try to keep your voice authoritative, despite the tremor in your hands. This is a disaster, an absolute clusterfuck, but you can't let them see you sweat. "Fine, fine," Flambae drawls. "But if I get monster goo on my new boots, I'm sending SDN the cleaning bill." Golem simply grunts in acknowledgement, and you hear the heavy thud of his clay feet moving into action. You switch to Waterboy's channel. "Waterboy, what's your status?" "I'm trying, Dispatch, I'm trying!" he squeaks. "But everyone's panicking! They're running around like headless chickens!" "Just keep them moving, Waterboy. Get them out of the bank and to a safe location. Can you use your powers to help?" "I... I can try," he says, his voice laced with doubt. "But I'm not good under pressure." "Just breathe, Waterboy," you say, trying to project calm. "You can do this. Small steps." Suddenly, Flambae's voice erupts over the comms, "Okay, that's it! These things are uglier up close! Get ready to be flambéed, ugly!" The sounds of roaring flames fill the airwaves, followed by a monstrous shriek. Golem's voice booms, "Worthless! It shrugs off fire as if it were nothing!" "Fall back! Fall back!" you shout into the microphone. "We need to regroup! Get clear, now!" The Z-Team scrambles to evacuate. Back at your desk, you try to assess the situation. The creature shrugged off fire and is busy tearing the place apart; no progress in subduing it. Waterboy is trying to manage the evacuation but is barely holding it together. Invisigal has the robbers contained, but is having to keep them contained in the immediate vicinity of the creature, with civilians escaping through a maze of debris and destruction Chase shuffles up behind you, his face grim. "Looks like your first day is going great," he says dryly. "Yeah, well, at least it's memorable," you reply, forcing a weak smile. "Any bright ideas, old-timer?" "Just one: try not to get anyone killed," he says, his eyes filled with a mixture of concern and pity. "And maybe call in some backup?" You consider it, your mind racing. But calling for backup would be an admission of failure, a sign that you can't handle the Z-Team. And you can't afford to fail. Not again. "No," you say, your voice hardening. "We can handle this. We just need a new plan."

You tap furiously at the console, your fingers flying across the keyboard as you formulate a new strategy. "Okay, listen up, people," you say, your voice crackling with renewed resolve. You tap furiously at the console, your fingers flying across the keyboard as you formulate a new strategy. "Okay, listen up, people," you say, your voice crackling with renewed resolve. "Malevola, I need you to open portals directly to the county jail. Invisigal, herd those robbers through – no detours." "Finally, a decent idea," Invisigal quips. "I was getting bored just standing around." You ignore her, focusing on the task at hand. "Prism, I want you to hit that creature with everything you've got. Blind it, disorient it – give Golem and Punch Up an opening." "Consider it done, darling," Prism purrs, her voice dripping with confidence. "Time for this beastie to see some real star power." Turning your attention back to the bank, you open a channel to Waterboy. You can hear the tremor in his voice and picture the chaos unfolding around him. "Waterboy, I need you to create a water barrier between the monster and the civilians. Channel all that anxiety into something useful." "But... but I don't know if I can," he stammers, his voice barely audible above the screams. "I'm not strong enough!" "You are, Waterboy," you insist, your voice firm but gentle. "You're a hero. Those people need you. Focus on the water, on protecting them. You can do this, you're a hero. I believe in you." You close the channel, hoping your words have gotten through. You can't afford for him to crack now. You glance over at Chase, who nods encouragingly. "Good call, Robert. Sometimes, all they need is a little push." On the comms, Malevola's voice echoes. "Portals are open. Sending the clowns through now." "Prism on it," announces Prism, and then the bank interior is briefly flooded by brilliant colors that abate quickly. "Now, Golem, Punch Up! Take him down!" you yell into the microphone. The sounds of battle erupt again – the thud of Golem's fists, the sickening crack of Punch Up's blows. You hold your breath, your heart pounding in your chest. This has to work. It just has to. You hear Golem yell: "Prism's flash made it angry, Punch Up! Hit it harder!". Suddenly, the creature roars. "Golem is down, Punch Up has it engaged!" shouts Prism into the coms, but you also detect a certain level of fear in her tone. "Dispatch, civilians evacuated, but are injured. Monster is too fast, barrier breach imminent!" Waterboy screams, before his channel cuts off abruptly. "Punch Up is down!" Prism screams, as she cuts off her channel as well. You stare in horror.
