During the late 7th century BC, Judah became a vassal kingdom of Babylon. In 601 BC, Jehoiakim, king of Judah, revolted against Babylonian rule despite the strong remonstrances of the prophet Jeremiah.[2][3] Jehoiakim died for reasons unclear, and was succeeded by his son, Jeconiah.[4][5] In 597 BC, the Babylonians besieged Jerusalem, and the city surrendered.[2][6] Nebuchadnezzar pillaged Jerusalem and deported Jeconiah and o...

Dust devils dance across the parched earth, mirroring the turmoil within young Micah. He huddles deeper into the shadows of a crumbling gatehouse, the stench of burning cedar heavy in the air. Jerusalem, once vibrant with life, now groans under the iron fist of Nebuchadnezzar's siege. It is the year 589 BC. The relentless sun beats down upon the besieged city, intensifying the hunger gnawing at Micah's insides. His stomach churns, a constant reminder of the dwindling supplies within the city walls. He clutches a waterskin, its leather cracked and nearly empty. Each drop is precious, a temporary reprieve from the constant thirst that claws at his throat. Around him, the city is a cacophony of despair. The cries of the hungry mingle with the clang of Babylonian siege engines relentlessly pounding against the city's defenses. He can hear the distant roar of the invaders, a constant, menacing presence that keeps hope at bay. His father, a stonemason, had always spoken of Jerusalem's impregnable walls, built by kings and blessed by God. But now, those walls are scarred and broken, offering little comfort against the onslaught. The prophet Jeremiah's warnings echo in Micah's mind, a chilling prophecy of doom brought upon them by Zedekiah's rebellion against Babylon. He remembers the whispers in the marketplace, the hushed hopes pinned on Pharaoh Hophra and his promised Egyptian army. But those hopes have withered, like the barren fields outside the city walls. A figure emerges from the dust-choked streets – a woman, her face etched with worry, her clothes stained with the grime of the siege. It is his older sister, Sarah. "Micah," she says, her voice hoarse, "Father wants you. He's at the Western Wall." Fear coils in Micah's gut. The Western Wall is close to the fighting, a place of desperate prayers and dwindling hope. But his father's summons cannot be ignored. He rises, his legs stiff from crouching, and follows Sarah through the ravaged streets. They pass skeletal figures huddled in doorways, their eyes vacant with hunger. The air is thick with the stench of death and despair. As they walk, Micah wonders what his father wants, what task awaits him in this dying city. He wonders if there is anything left to salvage from this disaster. The weight of Jerusalem's fate presses down on his young shoulders, a burden far too heavy to bear.

Achilles scans the battlefield, his gaze sweeping over the chaotic scene below. He is a stranger in this land, a warrior displaced from his time, thrust into a conflict he barely understands. Yet, the instinct to fight, to protect, is as deeply ingrained in him as the legends that bear his name. He descends from the ridge, his armored boots crunching on the rocky terrain. The weight of his spear, a familiar comfort in this alien landscape, balances in his hand. As he approaches the city walls, he is met by a contingent of Judean soldiers, their faces hardened by weeks of relentless siege. They eye him warily, his unfamiliar armor and strange tongue setting him apart. A man steps forward, his beard streaked with gray, his eyes filled with a mixture of suspicion and desperation. "Who are you?" he demands in a rough voice, his grip tightening on his worn sword. "I am Achilles," he responds, his voice resonating with authority despite the foreign cadence. "I have come to fight for Jerusalem." The Judean soldier scoffs, his expression skeptical. "Another one lured by false promises? The Pharaoh's armies are nowhere to be seen. We are alone." "I need no Pharaoh's promise," Achilles retorts, his hand tightening on his spear. "I fight because it is in my blood." He gestures towards the siege engines, their destructive power evident even from this distance. "Tell me where I am needed, and I will prove my worth." The Judean soldier hesitates, then nods slowly. "We can use any help we can get," he admits grudgingly. "Follow me. We are holding the Western Wall. The Babylonians are focusing their assault there." He leads Achilles through the battered streets, past the gaunt faces of the starving inhabitants. Their eyes light up momentarily at the sight of the imposing warrior, a flicker of hope in the face of despair. As they reach the Western Wall, the air is thick with the sounds of battle. Arrows rain down from the Babylonian siege towers, while Judean archers return fire from behind makeshift barricades. Achilles surveys the scene, his mind already strategizing, assessing the weaknesses in the enemy's assault. He turns to the Judean soldier. "What are your orders?" he asks, his voice calm amidst the chaos. "Tell me how best to defend this city."

The Judean soldier, a grizzled veteran named Elam, stares at Achilles, his expression a mix of awe and disbelief. He has seen warriors fight with bravery, but the aura radiating from this golden-haired stranger is something else entirely. Elam quickly briefs Achilles on the situation. The Babylonians are focusing their assault on a weakened section of the wall, hoping to breach it before nightfall. Their siege towers are providing cover for sappers attempting to undermine the foundations. Judean archers are doing their best to repel the assault, but they are outnumbered and their arrows are dwindling. Achilles nods, his mind already racing. He activates his temporal gift, the world around him slowing to a crystalline crawl. Arrows hang suspended in mid-air, their trajectories frozen. Babylonian soldiers move like statues, their siege engines frozen in time. He perceives the battlefield with unnatural clarity, identifying the critical points, the vulnerabilities in the enemy's assault. Fifteen seconds is all he has, a fleeting moment to change the course of the battle. With impossible speed, he moves along the wall, a blur of gold and bronze. He plucks arrows from the air, redirecting them with pinpoint accuracy to strike key Babylonian archers. He leaps from the wall, landing amidst the sappers with a thunderous crash. His Myrmidon armor deflects their clumsy blows, his spear a whirlwind of death. He moves with the grace of a god, each strike precise and lethal. The sappers fall like wheat before a scythe, their bodies broken and bleeding. Before the Babylonians can react, Achilles is back on the wall, his temporal gift fading, the world snapping back to its normal pace. A collective gasp rises from the Judean defenders as they witness the carnage he has wrought. The Babylonian assault falters, their momentum broken by the sudden, inexplicable losses. Elam stares at Achilles, his jaw agape. ´What… what was that?´ he stammers, his voice barely a whisper. Achilles simply smiles, his eyes burning with divine fire. ´Just a taste of what I can do,´ he replies. ´Now, let us show these Babylonians what it means to face a son of Achilles.´ He raises his spear, his voice ringing out across the battlefield. ´For Jerusalem! For freedom!´
