The Michigan woods press in around me, a suffocating blanket of pine and damp earth. Eight months. Eight months since I last saw Lisa's bright, mischievous smile, since I heard her infectious laugh echoing through our childhood home. Now, all that remains is this gnawing emptiness, a hollowness that leads me deeper into the green abyss. The cabin looms ahead, a skeletal silhouette against the bruised twilight sky. Its windows are dark, like vacant eyes staring into my soul. A shiver crawls down my spine, a primal warning that whispers of something profoundly wrong. This isn't the rustic retreat Lisa described in her sporadic, cryptic postcards. This is something else entirely. I push open the creaking wooden door, the hinges groaning in protest as if guarding a terrible secret. The air inside is thick with the scent of mildew and decay, a cloying sweetness that makes my stomach churn. Dust motes dance in the faint light filtering through the grimy windows, illuminating a scene of utter disarray. Overturned furniture, shattered dishes, and scattered pages of what appear to be a journal litter the floor. It's as if a struggle has taken place, a violent eruption in this isolated sanctuary. "Lisa?" My voice trembles, a fragile thread in the oppressive silence. Only the rustling of unseen things within the walls answers me. I step further inside, my boots crunching on broken glass. The journal pages catch my eye, covered in Lisa's familiar handwriting, but the words are… different. Unsettled. They're watching, one entry screams in frantic, spidery script. The trees… they whisper her name. Her name? Whose name? Another page contains a crude drawing of a twisted, gnarled tree with eyes carved into its trunk. A sense of dread washes over me, cold and suffocating. This isn't just a case of a sister needing to get away. Something dark has taken hold of Lisa here, something that has poisoned this place. I venture further into the cabin, into what I assume is the living room. A fireplace dominates one wall, choked with ashes and half-burnt wood. Above the mantle, a mirror hangs crookedly, its surface clouded with grime. As I stare into it, I see not my own reflection, but a fleeting glimpse of something else. A shadowy figure lurking in the periphery, a distorted face with eyes that burn like embers. I gasp and stumble back, my heart pounding against my ribs. When I look again, the mirror shows only my own terrified face. Was it a trick of the light? Or a glimpse into the nightmare that has consumed my sister? "Lisa!" I shout again, my voice cracking with desperation. "Where are you?" A faint sound, like a whisper, drifts from the back of the cabin. It's barely audible, a mere breath in the suffocating silence. But it's enough. It's enough to send me stumbling towards the sound, towards the unknown horrors that await me in the darkness.

I cautiously step into the kitchen, the linoleum floor cold beneath my worn boots. The room is small, cramped, and dominated by a rusty, antiquated stove. I cautiously step into the kitchen, the linoleum floor cold beneath my worn boots. The room is small, cramped, and dominated by a rusty, antiquated stove. A chipped teapot sits atop one of the burners, and as I enter, it emits a faint, high-pitched whistle, a sound that seems to curl around my nerves like a tendril. But it's not the teapot that makes me jump. It's Lisa. She stands by the window, bathed in the eerie glow of the twilight. Her silhouette is unmistakable, yet… different. She's pregnant, impossibly so, her belly swollen with a life that seems mere moments away from entering the world. Her frame is gaunt, her skin translucent, like porcelain on the verge of shattering. She's wearing a simple white nightgown, but it's stained with dirt and grime, clinging to her like a shroud. "Lisa!" I gasp, my voice barely a whisper. She flinches, her eyes widening in a flicker of recognition and fear. "Sarah? What are you doing here? How did you find me?" Her voice is weak, raspy, barely a shadow of the vibrant tone I remember. "I'm a cop, remember?" I say, trying to keep my voice steady, to project an air of authority I don't feel. "Lisa, what… why didn't you tell me? I could have…" She turns away, her gaze fixed on something beyond the window, something only she can see. "You should go, Sarah. I'm fine here." "Fine? You look like hell to me, sis. Have you seen a doctor lately?" She shakes her head, her long dark hair falling around her face like a curtain. "I don't need a doctor. He takes care of me." "He? You mean the father? Where…" But before I can finish my question, the front door creaks open. A man enters the kitchen, filling the small space with his presence. He's tall, with broad shoulders and a face that seems both handsome and unsettlingly serene. But it's his eyes that capture my attention. They're a striking, unnatural gold, and as he looks at me, I feel a strange pull, a hypnotic force that threatens to unravel my will. "Hello," he says, his voice a smooth, honeyed baritone. "I'm Mike. And you are?" The air thickens, the shadows deepen, and I know, with a chilling certainty, that I've stumbled into something far more sinister than a simple family drama. This man, this Mike, is the key to Lisa's transformation, to the darkness that has taken root in this cabin. And I fear that finding Lisa may have been the most dangerous thing I've ever done.

Mike's touch is surprisingly cold as he takes my hand, his grip firm, almost possessive. He raises it towards his lips, and a primal instinct screams at me to pull away. Mike's touch is surprisingly cold as he takes my hand, his grip firm, almost possessive. He raises it towards his lips, and a primal instinct screams at me to pull away. I wrench my hand free, breaking the hypnotic hold of his golden eyes. ´This is Sarah, my sister,´ Lisa says, her voice strained, her eyes darting nervously between us. Mike smiles, a practiced, unsettlingly charming expression. ´Oh, Sarah, of course. Lisa has told me so much about you.´ ´Funny, she never mentioned you,´ I reply, my voice sharper than intended. He chuckles, a low, rumbling sound that vibrates in the small kitchen. ´We met in college, years ago. Lisa needed a place… to think for herself. She asked if she could stay here, and I was happy to oblige.´ ´And treat her for her pregnancy, right?´ I ask, watching him carefully. Mike nods, his smile widening, revealing teeth that seem a little too sharp, a little too predatory. ´I have a way with women, especially expecting ones. You could say it's a family business.´ The implication hangs in the air, heavy and sickening. Before I can press him further, Lisa gasps, clutching her abdomen. Her teacup slips from her trembling fingers, shattering on the linoleum. ´Lisa! What's wrong?´ I rush to her side, concern overriding my suspicion for a moment. She's sweating profusely, her face contorted in pain. ´I'm so hot,´ she whispers, her voice barely audible. ´Mike… help me.´ I reach for my phone, intending to call for an ambulance, but Mike intercepts me, his hand clamping down on my wrist with surprising force. ´It's okay, Sarah. I've got this.´ He releases me, his eyes locking with mine for a brief, unsettling moment. Then, he turns his attention to Lisa, his movements fluid and graceful. He places a hand on her swollen belly, his fingers splayed possessively across its surface. He leans down and kisses her forehead, whispering something in her ear that I can't quite make out. Lisa sags against him, her body limp and pliant. He scoops her up in his arms with ease. ´You can use the couch, Sarah. It's very comfortable,´ he says, his voice laced with a chillingly polite dismissal. Then, he turns and carries Lisa upstairs, leaving me alone in the kitchen, surrounded by the shards of a broken teacup and the gnawing certainty that I've walked into a nightmare from which there may be no escape. The air crackles with unspoken threats, and the silence is deafening, broken only by the distant creaks and groans of the ancient cabin. I am alone, and utterly, irrevocably, afraid.
