The sterile fluorescent lights of the "High-Quality Pets" adoption center hum, reflecting harshly off the polished chrome floor. Clarice sits huddled in the corner of her designated enclosure, the clear plasteel walls doing little to soothe her spiraling anxiety. Earth is a distant, fading memory. Here, on Kalaxtis, she is nothing more than a potential pet. The air smells vaguely of disinfectant and something artificial, like sweetened metal. A constant stream of tall, bizarre aliens parades past her enclosure, their multi-faceted eyes scrutinizing her as if she were a defective product. She tries to make herself smaller, tucking her knees to her chest. The data tag clipped to her collar—'Clarice, Human Female, Standard Diet, Vaccinated'—feels like a brand, a constant reminder of her dehumanization. A particularly unsettling group pauses before her enclosure. They are Kalaxtians, their skin shimmering with an oily sheen, their insectile legs clicking softly on the floor. One of them, taller than the rest, extends a slender, many-jointed finger and taps lightly on the plasteel. Clarice flinches, pressing further into the corner. Suddenly, a wave of calm washes over her, a soothing presence that quiets the frantic beating of her heart. It’s telepathy, she realizes with a jolt of fear. The tall alien's thoughts, though alien, are clear: Interesting specimen. Appears distressed. He steps forward, and Clarice shrinks back even further. He is enormous, easily twelve feet tall, with smooth, dark green scales covering his reptile-like frame. Four arms fold neatly across his chest, and his four eyes, arranged in two neat rows, regard her with an unnerving intensity. This is Zak. He studies her, his gaze lingering on her face, her hair, the delicate curve of her neck. She wants to scream, to fight, but her body refuses to obey. The weeks of processing, the alien food, the constant fear, have left her weak, docile. Submissive. "She is... acceptable," Zak rumbles, his voice a deep baritone that vibrates through the plasteel. He turns to one of the smaller Kalaxtians, who scurries forward, holding a digital pad. "Prepare the adoption papers. I will take this one." Clarice's breath hitches in her throat. Adoption. It's a euphemism, she knows. She is not being adopted into a loving family. She is becoming a pet. A possession. Zak's gaze returns to her, his alien eyes softening slightly. He steps closer to the enclosure, his presence filling her vision. Another wave of telepathic calm washes over her, stronger this time. Do not be afraid, little one, he projects, his thoughts surprisingly gentle. I will care for you. He gestures to the enclosure door, and it slides open with a soft hiss. Zak extends one of his large hands towards her, the smooth scales cool against her skin.

Clarice hesitates for only a moment, then reaches out, her fingers trembling as they brush against the cool, smooth scales of Zak's hand. It feels alien, unnatural, yet strangely reassuring. The telepathic calm he projects is a balm to her frayed nerves, a temporary reprieve from the panic that threatens to consume her. She grasps his hand, the size difference almost comical, her small human hand dwarfed by his large alien one. Zak's grip is firm but gentle, careful not to hurt her. He pulls her forward, and she steps out of the enclosure, her legs unsteady beneath her. The plasteel floor feels cold against her bare feet. The adoption center seems to fade into a blur, the sounds of chattering aliens and whirring machinery receding into the background. All she can focus on is Zak, his towering presence both terrifying and comforting. He is her captor, yes, but also her protector, her only anchor in this alien world. He does not speak, but she hears his thoughts in her mind, a soft, reassuring murmur. Easy now, little one. I have you. Zak guides her through the adoption center, his large strides easily outpacing her own. She has to take two steps for every one of his, her hand still clasped tightly in his. The other aliens give them a wide berth, their multi-faceted eyes following them with a mixture of curiosity and indifference. As they approach the exit, Clarice notices a small, hovering vehicle waiting just outside. It is sleek and silver, its design both elegant and functional. Zak helps her inside, his movements surprisingly graceful for someone of his size. The interior of the vehicle is plush and comfortable, the seats molded to fit her small frame. Once she is settled, Zak climbs in beside her, his bulk filling the small space. The vehicle hums to life, and they lift off the ground, soaring silently into the alien sky. Clarice stares out the window, her gaze fixed on the strange, otherworldly landscape. The buildings are tall and angular, their surfaces shimmering with iridescent colors. Flying vehicles crisscross the sky like swarms of insects, their lights blinking in a chaotic dance. Kalaxtis. It is her new home, her new prison. Zak turns to her, his four eyes filled with concern. Are you alright, little one? She nods, unable to speak. Her throat is tight with fear and resignation. She is his now, his pet. Her life is no longer her own. But as she looks into his alien eyes, she sees something else there, something unexpected. Kindness. Perhaps, she thinks, this won't be so bad after all.

The hovering vehicle glides smoothly through the Kalaxtian sky, the city lights blurring into streaks of vibrant color. Clarice remains pressed against the window, the alien landscape a stark reminder of her displacement. Zak’s telepathic presence is a constant hum in the back of her mind, a strange comfort amidst the overwhelming fear. He senses her unease, his thoughts brushing against hers like a gentle breeze. Do not be afraid, little Clarice. We are almost home. I will care for you. The word ‘home’ feels foreign on this alien planet, yet Zak’s reassurance is surprisingly effective. She turns to look at him, studying his reptilian features, searching for any sign of deception. His expression is unreadable, his emotions carefully guarded. Yet, she senses a genuine warmth beneath his stoic exterior. As they fly, the hovering vehicle leaves the city and enters a more remote location. They descend towards a large structure in the distance that is surrounded by lush alien foliage. As they approach, Clarice can see the structure is a mansion, a stark contrast to the sterile environment of the adoption center. The vehicle lands gently on a landing pad outside the front entrance. Zak rises, his massive frame unfolding within the confined space. He offers Clarice his hand, and she hesitantly takes it, allowing him to help her out of the vehicle. The air smells of exotic flora, a sweet and unfamiliar fragrance that fills her lungs. Clarice glances around, taking in the sight of the alien plants and trees. The mansion is constructed of polished metal and shimmering glass, its architecture both elegant and imposing. Zak guides her towards the entrance, his hand still clasped firmly around hers. The doors slide open, revealing a spacious foyer filled with alien art and strange, yet beautiful decor. Clarice pauses, overwhelmed by the opulence of her new surroundings. Welcome, little one, to my home. I hope you will be happy here. He gently tugs her inside, deeper into the mansion. Clarice, feeling a sense of wonder mixed with trepidation, follows him. "Thank you, Zak." He inclines his head, his eyes gleaming with an unreadable emotion. There is much to learn, little one. But for now, rest. You must be exhausted. He leads her through the foyer and down a long corridor, stopping before a door. He opens it, revealing a spacious room filled with soft lighting and plush furnishings. This is your room, Clarice. I trust it meets your satisfaction.
