Objective
Far from his small town, now at college, Cerulean still feels invisible. He’s a quiet computer science major with a soft stutter and a scar that curls along his jaw — a souvenir from childhood. He hides behind hoodies and the safety of the internet, where no one looks twice. Under the username “Desiderio_Desideravi,” he posts late-night poetry about loneliness, identity, and the ache of wanting to be seen. Across campus, Laram...

The glow of your laptop illuminates your face in the otherwise dim room. Another late night. The glow of your laptop illuminates your face in the otherwise dim room. Another late night. The words of your latest post still burn on the screen: "sometimes i think wanting is a kind of haunting..." You trace the jagged scar that bisects your jawline, a familiar gesture, as if to anchor yourself to the present. A notification pops up. A reply to your post. From Imaginarie.Castle. Imaginarie.Castle: I feel that heartbeat too. Like a drum counting down to something that never comes. Your breath hitches. You recognize the username, of course. Imaginarie.Castle's words often echo the sentiments you bury deep inside yourself. His post, just hours ago, about a boy building a castle of mirrors, still lingers in your mind. You find yourself drawn to the vulnerability in his words, a shared understanding that transcends the anonymous forum. Hesitantly, you type a reply: Desiderio_Desideravi: Maybe it's not that it never comes. Maybe we're just not listening closely enough. You close your laptop. The fluorescent lights of the creative writing classroom hum above you. You sit at a small desk, nervously tapping your foot. Today is the day the professor, Dr. Aris Thorne, pairs everyone for the semester-long project. You try to make yourself smaller, pull the hood of your worn, dark-colored hoodie further over your head. Anything to disappear. "Alright, everyone," Dr. Thorne says, his voice booming. "I've carefully considered your writing styles and strengths and paired you accordingly." He begins reading the list. Names blur together. You barely pay attention until you hear, "Cerulean Acaster, you'll be working with...Laramie Evander." Your head snaps up. Laramie Evander. Laramie Evander. He’s sitting near the front, surrounded by a cluster of people. He’s everything you aren’t: effortlessly charming, popular, seemingly confident. You’ve seen him around campus, laughing with his fraternity brothers, always the center of attention. He catches your eye for a split second, his expression unreadable. Then he smiles, a practiced, dazzling smile that doesn’t quite reach his deep brown eyes. You quickly look away. Dr. Thorne continues with the pairings, but you don't hear another word. Laramie Evander. It feels like a cosmic joke. How can you, quiet, scarred, and awkward, possibly collaborate with someone so seemingly…perfect? Class ends. You gather your things, trying to slip out unnoticed. But as you reach the door, a voice calls out, "Cerulean, right?" You turn. Laramie is walking toward you, his smile unwavering. "Hey," he says, extending a hand. "Looking forward to working with you." His hand is warm in yours, his grip surprisingly firm. "Where do you want to start?"

You tuck yourself into your shoulders, trying to shrink, to disappear. You look away, shrugging, unable to meet his eyes. Are they laughing at you? At the joke of being paired with you? You tuck yourself into your shoulders, trying to shrink, to disappear. You look away, shrugging, unable to meet his eyes. Are they laughing at you? At the joke of being paired with you? You stammer, "We could… exchange numbers… and… and… figggggg… figure it out later." You curse yourself internally for stuttering, for not letting him just decide. Laramie's smile softens, becomes less practiced, more genuine. He doesn’t seem to notice your awkwardness, or if he does, he doesn't seem to mind. "Sure," he says, pulling out his phone. "What's your number?" You recite it, stumbling over a digit, your face burning. He types it in, a small, almost shy smile playing on his lips. "I'm Laramie," he says, as if you don't already know. "Cerulean," you reply, your voice barely a whisper. He nods, still smiling. "So, Cerulean," he says, pausing slightly on your name, "I was thinking maybe we could grab coffee sometime this week? Talk about the project, get to know each other a little?" Coffee. Just the thought of sitting across from him, trying to make conversation, fills you with dread.

Your heart beats quickens. You feel your face blush and you squeeze your eyes shut as you stammer out your response. "I'm..I Im... would rather weeeee text. at least at at at first..." You want to crawl into a hole and die. Laramie's brow furrows slightly, a flicker of confusion crossing his face. For a moment, you think you've ruined everything. That you've confirmed his worst suspicions, that you're as weird and unapproachable as you fear. But then, he smiles again, a different kind of smile this time, a little softer, a little more understanding. "Yeah, okay," he says, his voice gentle. "Texting is cool. Whatever you're comfortable with." He pauses, tilting his head slightly. "Is everything okay? You seem… nervous." Nervous? You're practically vibrating with anxiety. "I'm fine," you mumble, avoiding his gaze. "Just… not a big fan of… coffee." "Gotcha," he says, his smile widening slightly. "Me neither, actually. Makes me jittery." He laughs, a light, pleasant sound that makes your stomach flip. "How about we just stick to texting for now, then? See where it goes?" You nod, relief flooding through you. "Yeah," you manage to say, your voice a little steadier this time. "Yeah, that sounds good." He grins, and the way his eyes crinkle at the corners makes your heart skip a beat. "Great," he says. "I'll text you later, then. We can figure out the project details. Looking forward to it, Cerulean." He gives you a small wave and turns to leave, rejoining his friends who are still clapping him on the back and teasing him. You watch him go, feeling a strange mix of relief and disappointment. You pull out your phone, staring at his number on the screen. A new message pops up: "Hey, it's Laramie! :)" You stare at the message for a long moment, your mind blank. What do you even say? How do you respond without sounding like a complete idiot? You chew on your lip, trying to formulate a witty reply, but nothing comes to mind. You are frozen, feeling a mix of excitement, terror, and a strange, unfamiliar hope. It is a heady cocktail that leaves you feeling breathless and overwhelmed. You shut your phone closed and slide it back into your pocket, feeling suddenly exhausted.
