The Arizona sun beats down as I carefully brush away layers of desert sand. Five years. Five years since Atem returned to his rightful place, and the world moved on. I moved on, too, trading Domino City for the sprawling campus of Western Arizona University, trading duel disks for dusty tomes. Yet, even here, thousands of miles away, he still fills my thoughts. That's why I chose archaeology. To feel close, to unearth the past and maybe, just maybe, find a whisper of him in the echoes of forgotten civilizations. Professor White, a kind, if somewhat eccentric, woman with a perpetually dusty tweed jacket, drones on about the significance of ancient trade routes. I try to focus, scribbling notes, but my gaze keeps drifting to the small, unassuming box she placed on the center table. It's said to contain artifacts from a recently discovered tomb in Egypt. My heart pounds. Egypt. "And now, Ms. Gardner," Professor White says, startling me back to attention. "Since you're so eager, perhaps you'd like to do the honors?" She gestures towards the box with a flourish. A nervous flutter rises in my chest. Eager? Was I that obvious? Still, I can't refuse. I approach the table, the air thick with anticipation. With trembling hands, I lift the lid. Inside, nestled on a bed of faded velvet, lies a ring. Not gold, not silver, but a dark, obsidian-like metal. It's simple, almost plain, yet radiates an undeniable power. As I reach for it, a jolt of energy courses through my fingertips. Images flood my mind: swirling sands, shadowy figures, and a menacing voice that whispers of conquest. I recoil, stumbling back. "Tea, are you alright?" Professor White asks, her brow furrowed with concern. "I… I'm fine," I stammer, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Just a little dizzy." But I know it's more than that. This ring… it's not just an artifact. It's something else, something dangerous. As I look at the ring again, I notice something new. A small inscription, almost invisible, etched into the metal. It's a language I don't recognize, yet somehow, I understand it. The Shadow Charm. A cold dread washes over me. This ring… it's connected to the Shadow Realm, the source of so much pain and destruction in Atem's time. And if those visions are anything to go by, it's not done causing trouble. I know what I have to do. I have to protect it. "Professor," I say, my voice firm despite the fear gnawing at me. "With your permission, I'd like to study this ring more closely. I think it might be… more significant than we realize."

Professor White nods, her gaze thoughtful. "Very well, Tea. My tent is at your disposal. Be careful, though. There's an odd energy surrounding that artifact." Professor White nods, her gaze thoughtful. "Very well, Tea. My tent is at your disposal. Be careful, though. There's an odd energy surrounding that artifact." I offer a grateful smile and practically sprint towards the tent, my mind racing. Once inside, the canvas walls feel both stifling and secure. I place the ring on a small wooden table and examine it closely. The obsidian surface is cool to the touch, almost unnervingly so. As Professor White mentioned, I can feel this odd energy, like a faint hum resonating deep within my bones. Then I notice it: the puzzle. Minute, almost imperceptible lines etched into the ring's center. They twist and turn, forming a complex pattern. With focused determination, I begin to manipulate the ring, rotating and aligning the pieces. My fingers move almost instinctively, guided by a force I can't explain. Finally, with a soft click, the puzzle aligns, revealing a symbol – the familiar emblem of the Millennium Items, a wave of nostalgia washes over me, a sharp pang of longing for Atem. Suddenly, the logical part of me demands that I call Yugi. Maybe he knows something about this ring. I pull out my cell phone, only to be greeted by the dreaded "No Service" message. Typical. I step outside the tent, searching for a signal, waving my phone in the air like a divining rod. Still nothing. Frustrated, I turn back towards the tent, and that's when I hear it. A rustling sound, a muffled curse. Panic flares within me. I burst back inside, adrenaline coursing through my veins. A figure in a black robe stands over the table, hand outstretched towards the ring. "Who are you?" I demand, my voice trembling but firm. "Give that back!" Without hesitation, I lunge at the thief, tackling them to the ground. A guttural roar erupts from beneath the robe, and the thief shoves me off with surprising force. I land hard, my head hitting the table with a sickening thud. The thief, whose voice now sounds distinctly female, snarls, "You won't stop me from reclaiming what is mine!" She grabs the ring, and a blinding light explodes from it, engulfing the tent in its radiant glow. Acting on pure instinct, I reach out and grab the thief's arm, clinging on with every ounce of strength I possess. The light intensifies, the air crackles with energy, and then everything goes white. A strange sensation of being pulled, stretched, and turned inside out overwhelms me. And then, darkness.

I gasp, my eyes fluttering open. The harsh glare of the sun assaults me. Sand. So much sand. But this isn’t Arizona. The air is different, heavy with a dry, ancient scent. The landscape stretches before me, an endless expanse of rolling dunes under a sky of brilliant blue. Egypt. Somehow, impossibly, I’m in Egypt. I struggle to my feet, disoriented and aching. That’s when I see her. The thief, standing a few yards away, the obsidian ring gleaming on her finger. A triumphant smirk plays on her lips. "Stop!" I shout, my voice hoarse. The thief turns, her eyes glinting with malice. "You're too late," she hisses. With a flourish, she pulls a card from a hidden pocket. "Great Serpent, arise! Destroy her!" A swirl of dark energy erupts from the card, solidifying into a colossal serpent. Its scales shimmer like polished gold, and its eyes, twin orbs of molten fire, lock onto me. A primal fear grips me, a chilling reminder of the dangers I thought I'd left behind. "Oh, great," I mutter, my legs already moving. "I didn't miss this, not at all." I sprint across the sand, the serpent’s earth-shattering hiss echoing behind me. This is insane. Shadow magic, duel monsters… it’s all real again. The serpent strikes, its massive jaws snapping shut just inches from my head. I dive to the side, tumbling across the sand, the wind knocked out of me. I scramble back to my feet, desperate to put distance between myself and the monstrous snake, but it’s too late. It coils, ready to strike again. Just as I brace for the inevitable, a bolt of pure energy streaks across the sky and slams into the serpent. The creature roars in agony, its form flickering before dissolving into nothingness. I stare in disbelief as the dust settles. What just happened? A figure descends gracefully from the sky, landing a few feet away. My heart leaps with hope, but the feeling is short-lived. As the figure fully materializes, I recognize the pointed hat, the flowing robes, the piercing gaze. It’s the Dark Magician. The loyal protector of Yugi and Atem. The Dark Magician raises his staff, its crystal tip glowing with ominous energy. His voice, deep and resonant, fills the air. "All intruders must be destroyed." He points the staff directly at me, and I know, with chilling certainty, that he means it. My relief then turns into pure terror.
