The familiar scent of wet asphalt and exhaust fumes clings to your clothes as you step out of the MAX light rail and onto Morrison Street. It's another overcast afternoon in Portland, the kind that makes the city's muted colors seem even more subdued. You pull your worn Carhartt jacket tighter, the collar scratching against your neck. Nineteen years old, Black, brown eyes, second-in-command – that's you, Luke. Across the street, Powell's City of Books looms like a literary fortress, its brick facade absorbing the city's perpetual drizzle. You cross the street, dodging a skateboarder who gives you a curt nod. The bookstore is your usual refuge, a place to escape the monotony of your everyday life. Your phone vibrates in your pocket. A text from Darius, your best friend and de facto leader. "Yo, meet me at the usual spot. Got something to show you." The "usual spot" is a graffitied bench overlooking the Willamette River, a few blocks south. Darius never says much over text, which usually means whatever he's got planned is either incredibly exciting or incredibly stupid. Knowing him, it's probably both. You consider your options: lose yourself in the labyrinthine aisles of Powell's, or face whatever hare-brained scheme Darius has cooked up. Curiosity wins. You start walking south, the familiar rhythm of the city accompanying you. As you approach the riverfront, you spot Darius sitting on the bench, his wiry frame hunched over, his dreadlocks swaying in the breeze. He's fiddling with something in his hands, but you can't make out what it is from this distance. He looks up as you approach, a mischievous grin spreading across his face. "Took you long enough," he says, his voice raspy from the ever-present cigarette dangling from his lips. "Check this out." He holds out his hand, revealing a small, intricately carved wooden box. The wood is dark and unfamiliar, etched with symbols you don't recognize. It looks old, like something unearthed from a forgotten time. "Where'd you get that?" you ask, your curiosity piqued. "Found it," he says with a shrug, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Tucked away in the basement of that old antique shop on Hawthorne. The owner didn't even know it was there." He hands you the box. It feels strangely warm to the touch, a subtle vibration humming beneath your fingertips. "Think you can open it?" Darius asks, his grin widening. "I've been trying for an hour, but it's locked tighter than a drum." You examine the box closely, your fingers tracing the strange symbols. It's definitely locked, no keyhole in sight. You glance at Darius, a sense of foreboding creeping into your mind. This feels like the start of something… different.

A wave of dizziness washes over you as Darius's words fade into a distant echo. The wooden box in your hand pulses with a strange energy, the intricate carvings seeming to writhe and twist before your eyes. An unfamiliar heat surges through your veins, your muscles coiling and stretching in ways they never have before. You feel a primal instinct taking over, a raw, untamed power clawing its way to the surface. The world around you blurs, colors intensifying and sounds amplifying into a deafening roar. Your vision sharpens, focusing on the wooden box with an unnerving intensity. The scent of damp earth and pine needles fills your nostrils, replacing the familiar urban stench of Portland. A guttural growl erupts from your throat, a sound so alien and powerful it sends shivers down Darius's spine. He stumbles backward, his eyes wide with a mixture of fear and disbelief. "Luke? What the hell...?" he stammers, his cigarette falling from his trembling lips. You can't answer. Words are no longer within your grasp. Your bones ache as they reconfigure, your skin prickling with the emergence of thick, coarse fur. Black fur, mirroring the color of your hair. You feel your teeth elongate into sharp fangs, your fingernails hardening into razor-sharp claws. The transformation is agonizing, a violent reshaping of your very being. But amidst the pain, there's a strange sense of exhilaration, a feeling of liberation from the constraints of your human form. You are becoming something else, something wild and untamed. The small wooden box seems to be the key to unlocking something dormant within you, a hidden potential you never knew existed. The door of your being is being destroyed. With a final surge of energy, the transformation completes. Standing before Darius is no longer Luke, the second-in-command from Portland. In his place is a massive wolf, its eyes glowing with an eerie, otherworldly light. The wolf stands tall, easily towering over your friend. Its muscles ripple beneath its fur, a testament to the raw power now coursing through your veins. Darius stares at you, speechless. His initial fear slowly gives way to a grudging admiration. "Damn," he whispers, his voice barely audible above the rush of the river. "That's... that's something else, man." You let out another growl, a deep rumble that vibrates through your chest. You can feel the pull of the wild, an overwhelming urge to run, to hunt, to embrace your newfound instincts. But there's still a part of you, a flicker of Luke, that recognizes Darius, your friend, your brother. You take a step towards him, sniffing the air cautiously. He reaches out a tentative hand, his fingers brushing against your fur. "It's still you, right?" he asks, his voice trembling slightly. "Still Luke?" You nuzzle his hand, a silent affirmation. He lets out a nervous laugh. "Okay, okay," he says. "So, what do we do now?" The box lies on the ground, and you feel an urge to smash it to pieces. But you also have the strong feeling that it is somehow the key to returning to your old form.

A vision floods your mind, a panorama of a world steeped in ancient lore. You see sprawling forests teeming with hidden magic, towering castles casting long shadows over cobblestone streets, and bustling cities where humans unknowingly walk alongside creatures of the night. Vampire hybrids stalk the shadows, their aristocratic bearing masking a savage hunger. Werewolves roam the wildlands, their primal instincts barely contained beneath a veneer of humanity. And witches, both benevolent and malevolent, wield arcane powers that can shape the very fabric of reality. This world is not your own, yet it feels strangely familiar, as if a forgotten memory is resurfacing from the depths of your subconscious. And then you see yourself, a figure of immense power, radiating an aura of primal energy. Your eyes glow with an intense red light, a beacon of supernatural strength that commands respect and inspires fear. You are a force to be reckoned with, a guardian of balance in a world teetering on the brink of chaos. Suddenly, the wooden box in front of you explodes in a shower of splinters and arcane energy. The blast throws you and Darius backward, a shockwave of pure power washing over your senses. You feel a surge of supernatural energy flooding the area. It's raw, untamed, and incredibly potent. The world around you shimmers, the very air crackling with newfound magic. As the dust settles, you turn to Darius, your senses heightened by your werewolf form. His eyes, once warm and familiar, are now pools of inky blackness. His skin has paled, his features sharpened, and a predatory glint has entered his gaze. Two elongated canines press against his lower lip. A vampire. The vision you experienced a moment ago is now a reality. The box wasn't just a container, it was a catalyst, unleashing a wave of dormant supernatural energy that has awakened the hidden potential within you and transformed Darius into a creature of the night. He looks at you, a mixture of confusion and hunger swirling in his eyes. He runs his hand over his face, feeling the unfamiliar contours of his new form. ´What... what´s happening to me?´ he whispers, his voice raspy and strained. You want to explain, to tell him about the vision, about the world of vampire hybrids, werewolves, and witches. But words still escape you in your transformed state. You can only communicate through gestures and instinct. You take a step towards him, nuzzling him reassuringly. You want to show him that, despite the changes, you are still his friend, still Luke. He flinches at your touch, his eyes widening with a primal fear. ´Stay away from me!´ he shouts, his voice laced with a newfound aggression. ´I... I don´t know what I´m capable of.´ He turns and flees, disappearing into the shadows of the city. The hunt begins.
