The crisp Vermont air stings your cheeks as you step out of your mom’s beat-up sedan. Elmwood Academy looms before you, a gothic fortress of privilege and expectation. You pull the hood of your worn, black hoodie tighter, the fabric doing little to shield you from the judging gazes that seem to materialize from the manicured lawns and ivy-covered walls. Today is your first day. Your mom's inheritance turned your world upside down, dragging you from your familiar, working-class life into this… this movie set. You adjust the strap of your backpack, the weight of your textbooks doing little to ground you. You trudge up the stone steps, each footfall echoing the uncertainty churning in your gut. The grand oak doors seem to swallow you whole as you step into a cathedral of hushed whispers and polished floors. The air smells of old money and floral disinfectant. Bodies drift around you like schools of exotic fish – perfectly coiffed hair, designer clothes, an effortless grace you know you’ll never possess. You try to blend in, to become invisible against the backdrop of wealth and entitlement, but your awkward gait and self-conscious slouch betray you. Suddenly, you collide with someone. A flurry of apologies tumbles from your lips as you scramble to gather your scattered belongings. "Oh, god! I am so sorry," a voice pipes up. You look up into the anxious face of a boy who is shorter than you, a little rounder than you’re used to seeing around here. His sandy-brown hair is a mess, and his cheeks are flushed a charming shade of pink. He is already gathering your things for you, rambling nervously. "I'm Lim. Lim Astilbe. And you’re new, right? I haven’t seen you around before. Are you in Mr. Armitage's History class? God, I'm such a dork. I just word-vomited all over you. Sorry." His eyes, deep brown with flecks of gold, dart around nervously. You can’t help but notice the way he bites his lip, a nervous habit that makes him look even younger. You manage a mumbled, "Atlas. Atlas Caster." Lim's face lights up. "Atlas! That's a cool name. Like the Titan, right? Or the book? I am terrible with names. Well, I should probably shut up now. Do you need help finding your class? It’s a bit of a maze here." His unexpected kindness throws you off balance. Back home, people saw your size as a threat, not an invitation. Here, in this strange new world, someone is actually offering you help. You can’t help but feel a flicker of something unfamiliar, something akin to… hope? "I… I have History next," you say, the words feeling clumsy and foreign in your own mouth. "Perfect! Me too! We can walk together. Unless… unless you’d rather be alone? I can be a bit much, I know," Lim says, his voice laced with a hint of self-deprecation. He looks at you expectantly, his eyes searching yours. In this moment, surrounded by the silent judgment of Elmwood Academy, you have a choice: retreat into the familiar solitude of your own making, or take a chance on the unexpected kindness of a boy named Lim.

Lim's hopeful expression melts some of the ice around your heart. The grand hallway, previously intimidating, seems a little less daunting with him by your side. Lim's hopeful expression melts some of the ice around your heart. The grand hallway, previously intimidating, seems a little less daunting with him by your side. However, you can't help but speak your anxiety aloud, it bubbles out of you before you can stop it, "This place is intimidating." Your voice is rougher than you intend, betraying your nervousness. Lim's eyes widen slightly, and his rosy cheeks deepen in color, but he doesn't seem put off by your bluntness. Instead, he offers you a small, reassuring smile. "Yeah, it can be," he admits, nodding his head in agreement. "Everyone here acts like they were born wearing a blazer and holding a trust fund, but they're just as lost as we are… or at least, I am. Don't let them intimidate you. Most of them are trying way too hard." He pauses, then adds with a playful nudge of your arm, "Plus, now you've got me. I can be your guide to the social minefield that is Elmwood Academy." The casual contact sends a strange warmth through you, and you find yourself unconsciously mirroring his smile. "So," Lim continues, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm, "Mr. Armitage's class is that way." He points down the hall, then begins walking, clearly expecting you to follow. "He's… an interesting guy. Bit of a weirdo, but he knows his stuff. And he's got this thing for making us debate historical events, which can be a nightmare if you're not prepared. But hey, at least it's not boring, right?" He pauses, glancing sideways at you. "Do you like history?" His question hangs in the air, an invitation to share something about yourself. You consider your response. Do you risk revealing anything about your true self to this… whirlwind of nervous energy? Or do you retreat back into the safety of your silence?

You shuffle nervously behind Lim, trying not to step on his heels, but not wanting to put too much distance between you in case you lose him in the crowd. You focus on the back of his sandy-brown hair, the way it sticks up in a few places despite his apparent attempts to smooth it down. His energy is… unusual. You are used to people staring at you, judging you, writing you off, but Lim's attention feels… different. You stumble slightly, catching yourself on the edge of a nearby locker, and mutter, "I… I like learning about ancient history… the building blocks of humanity as opposed to ruinous wars… um… do… you… uh, what about you, Lim?"
