Tokyo's autumn air bites with an unexpected chill as you step out of your morning Japanese history class. The phone vibrates in your pocket – an unfamiliar number. You answer, and a stern voice speaking rapid Japanese crackles through the receiver. Your conversational Japanese is good, but the urgency and formality throw you for a loop. You manage to understand: it's the police. They need you and your friends, the ones who visited the Nara shrine, to return immediately. There's been a robbery. Confusion knots in your stomach. You quickly text Kenji and Aiko, your classmates and fellow shrine visitors, and arrange to meet at the university entrance. The train ride to Nara feels longer than usual, the rhythmic clatter against the rails a soundtrack to your unease. Images of the ancient shrine flood your mind. The serene gardens, the towering pagoda, and most vividly, the prized Kitsune mask displayed in the main hall. It was an exquisite piece, crafted from lacquered wood, its foxlike features both elegant and unnerving. When you arrive at the shrine, the scene is chaotic. Yellow tape cordons off the entrance, and uniformed officers mill about, their faces grim. The air hangs heavy with a mix of incense and something acrid – like burnt wood. You spot Inspector Tanaka, a man with a severe face and sharp eyes that seem to bore into you. He approaches, his expression unreadable. "Caleb-san, thank you for coming so quickly." His Japanese is formal, laced with an edge of suspicion. "The shrine was broken into last night. The Kitsune mask… it was stolen." He leads you past the tape. The interior is a disaster. Display cases are shattered, their glass shards glinting under the dim light filtering through the damaged shoji screens. A sacred offering table lies overturned, its contents scattered across the floor. The air smells even stronger here, and you notice scorch marks on the tatami mats. Tanaka stops you in front of the empty display where the Kitsune mask once rested. In its place, a single sheet of paper. He allows you to approach. You pick it up carefully. The message is written in English, in blocky, uneven letters: "Caleb, you're closer than you think. The game has begun." A chill runs down your spine that has nothing to do with the autumn air. This wasn't a random act of vandalism. This was personal. You look up at Inspector Tanaka, his gaze unwavering. "What does it mean, Inspector?" you ask, your voice barely a whisper. "Why me?" Tanaka sighs, rubbing a hand over his tired face. "That, Caleb-san, is what we need to find out." He pauses, his eyes narrowing. "Tell me everything you remember about your visit to the shrine. Everything."

You, Kenji, and Aiko huddle together, recounting every detail of the past few days to Inspector Tanaka. You start with the day before the shrine visit. It was a typical Friday. You spent the morning at the university library, poring over ancient texts for a research paper on Shinto religious practices. Kenji had a Judo class, and Aiko worked her part-time job at a local bookstore. In the afternoon, you all met at a small ramen shop near campus, a place you frequented for its cheap and delicious noodles. You remember discussing the upcoming trip to Nara, your excitement palpable. Kenji, ever the pragmatist, researched train schedules and admission fees, while Aiko, with her artistic eye, looked up the history of the Kitsune mask, sharing fascinating details about its origins and the legends surrounding it. After ramen, you spent the evening at a karaoke bar, belting out off-key renditions of J-pop hits. It was a lighthearted, innocent night. Then comes the shrine visit itself. You describe the serene atmosphere, the intricate architecture, and the palpable sense of history that permeated the air. You recall the feeling of awe as you stood before the Kitsune mask, its enigmatic smile seeming to hold ancient secrets. You also remember a strange encounter: a man dressed in dark clothing, lurking in the shadows near the main hall. He seemed out of place, his eyes darting nervously. You mention this to Inspector Tanaka, who jots it down in his notepad. After the shrine, you explain, you grabbed some matcha ice cream and headed back to Osaka, where you are staying for the semester, on the bullet train. The next day, you attended your classes and hadn´t done anything out of the ordinary afterwards. Tanaka listens intently, his expression unchanging. When you finish, he leans back, his eyes fixed on you. ´Did you notice anything unusual about the mask? Anything at all?´ You think hard, trying to recall every detail. ´I remember thinking the eyes were… unsettling,´ Aiko chimes in. ´Like they were following you, even when you moved.´ Kenji nods in agreement. ´I thought it was just the lighting, but now that I think about it, they did seem a bit… intense.´ You also recall an odd detail: a faint scent of cherry blossoms emanating from the display case, even though it was the wrong season. You mention it to Tanaka, who raises an eyebrow. ´Cherry blossoms, you say? Interesting.´ He pauses, tapping his pen against his notepad. ´Thank you for your cooperation. I may have more questions for you later. In the meantime, please remain in Osaka and do not leave the city without informing me.´ He hands you his business card. As you step outside the shrine, the weight of the situation settles upon you. You are no longer just a student on a study abroad program. You are entangled in a mystery, a game orchestrated by an unknown player. And the stakes, you realize, are much higher than you initially thought. You look at Kenji and Aiko, their faces etched with worry. ´What do we do now?´ Aiko asks, her voice trembling slightly. The note left for you replays in your mind: ´Caleb, you´re closer than you think. The game has begun.´ You are certain the answer is somewhere in Osaka, perhaps even closer than you realize. You decide to do some investigating of your own. Where do you start?

You and your friends find a small, unassuming hotel in the Shinsekai district of Osaka. It's a far cry from the modern hotels you're used to, but it's clean and, more importantly, affordable. After agreeing to meet Kenji and Aiko later, you wake up early the next morning. While sitting in the hotel breakfast area, a small, brightly lit room with a buffet that consists mostly of fish and rice, you decide to call Professor Ging. He answers on the third ring, his voice warm and familiar. You explain the situation – the robbery, the note, the police investigation. He listens patiently, his initial amusement fading as he grasps the seriousness of the situation. When you finish, he sighs. ´Caleb, I'm sorry to hear about this. It sounds like you've stumbled into something quite complicated.´ He pauses. ´As for your assignments, don't worry about them for now. Focus on resolving this situation. I can provide extensions if needed, but you need to keep me informed.´ He then recites the upcoming assignments, ensuring you can keep up with your studies amidst the chaos. Your heart sinks slightly. You truly enjoy Japanese folklore and hate missing out on the fun. Professor Ging then says, ´However, there's something else. The Kitsune mask you mentioned… it's not just any artifact. It has a significant cultural value, steeped in local legends. If you truly wish to help solve this, delve into those legends. They might provide a clue, something the police might have missed.´ He mentions a particular story, one about a trickster fox spirit associated with that specific mask. It involves riddles, hidden messages, and a series of trials designed to test the worthiness of those who seek its power. It sounds like a fairy tale, but the way the professor words it makes you pause. ´Thank you, professor,´ you say, a new sense of purpose settling within you. ´I'll keep that in mind.´ After ending the call, you feel a renewed determination. You have a direction, a place to start. The legends surrounding the Kitsune mask. After finishing a small plate of rice and fish, you check your watch. Kenji and Aiko should be waiting by the Tsutenkaku Tower. You leave the hotel and make your way to the tower. You see Kenji and Aiko, waiting by the entrance, looking at a map. They seem to be arguing. As you approach, Kenji turns to you with a relieved expression. ´Caleb, there you are! We were just deciding where to start looking. Aiko wants to check out the antique shops in Den Den Town, but I think we should focus on the libraries first.´ Aiko rolls her eyes. ´The libraries? Really, Kenji? We're looking for a thief, not doing research for a term paper.´ You weigh their options. Den Den Town is known for its bustling atmosphere, crowded streets, and hidden alleys, perfect for someone trying to disappear or fence stolen goods. The libraries, on the other hand, could offer invaluable information about the Kitsune mask, its history, and the legends Professor Ging mentioned. Where do you go first?
