The abrupt jolt of your own body wakes you. Sweat clings to your skin, the lingering chill of the nightmare still prickling your senses. You sit up in your bed, the worn mattress creaking in protest. The familiar posters of alchemic symbols and manga heroes plastered across your dorm room wall offer a small comfort. It's 2024, and the last day of the school year looms, promising summer vacation. Your high school days in Japan feel distant now, a previous life before this multidimensional nexus of a school. You, Kale Ido, the Afro-Japanese exchange student, still getting used to this place of spellcraft and impossible studies. You swing your legs over the side of the bed, your bare feet hitting the cool floor. The silver medallion, shaped like the continent of Africa, swings from your neck as you rise. You finger it, a habit you've developed since arriving here. A sense of unease settles in your stomach, a residue of the nightmare: a faceless figure pursuing you through twisting corridors, a feeling of your own power slipping away. You glance at the reflection in your window; the high-top fade is messy, but present. You can’t help the fleeting thought in your head, a comedic observation about the irony of being a ‘chosen one’ with bed hair. That's your shield, humor. You tug your ear buds from the nightstand and shove them into your ears, letting the music drown out the echoes of the dream. The school is always abuzz, even this early. You shuffle out of your room and towards the cafeteria, where the aroma of magically enhanced miso soup and transmutated fruits fills the air. You spot Bruno across the room, his hulking frame unmistakable even amidst the throng of students. He's already got a tray piled high with food, tiny glasses perched precariously on his nose. He waves you over, a broad grin splitting his face. “Kaleido! Sleep okay, my brother?” he asks, his voice a booming counterpoint to his gentle eyes. You shrug, grabbing a bowl of soup. “Just the usual nightmares.” Bruno frowns, concern etching lines on his forehead. “Still? Man, you gotta shake those. Next year, you and me, we learn some dream walking magic. We kick those nightmares where the sun don't shine.” He shovels a spoonful of rice into his mouth, glancing around conspiratorially. “You hear anything new about those ‘Everybody’ rumors? I heard some upperclassmen talking about them again last night. They say ‘7 Blades’ is getting ready for a big move.” You suppress a sigh. The whispers of the dark cultivation faction, ‘Everybody’, and their conflict with the light faction ‘7 Blades (of the Gods)’ have been circulating for months. It all feels so distant, so removed from your own life. "Just rumors, Bruno," you say, trying to sound dismissive. "Probably just bored students trying to sound important." Bruno shakes his head. "I don't know, Kaleido. Something feels off. This year is different." The cafeteria doors swing open, and a hush falls over the room. Even you can feel the change in atmosphere. A tall, stern-faced woman in flowing robes enters, her gaze sweeping across the students. You recognize her instantly: Madame Evangeline, the head of the Alchemy department. “Attention, students,” she says, her voice amplified by some unseen magic. “An important announcement. Please gather in the courtyard immediately.” You exchange a nervous glance with Bruno. Something is definitely different.

You follow Bruno as he weaves his way through the throng of students heading towards the courtyard. A sense of unease settles over you. The air crackles with anticipation, whispers flying like startled birds. You clutch the silver medallion beneath your shirt, a subconscious gesture for comfort. As you enter the courtyard, you see the entire student body gathered, a sea of colorful robes and anxious faces. The air hums with barely contained magical energy. Madame Evangeline stands on a raised platform, her presence commanding immediate attention. To her sides stand other faculty members, their expressions grim. “Students,” Madame Evangeline begins, her voice resonating across the courtyard. “As you know, our school exists within a nexus of realities. We are shielded, for the most part, from the conflicts that rage in other dimensions.” A murmur ripples through the crowd. You exchange a worried glance with Bruno. This doesn’t sound good. “However,” Madame Evangeline continues, her voice hardening, “recent events have shown that the veil is thinning. The conflict between ‘Everybody’ and ‘7 Blades’ is escalating, and its tendrils are reaching into our world.” A collective gasp rises from the students. The rumors were true, then. This isn’t just some distant conflict; it’s real, and it’s here. “We have detected a surge of dark energy near the eastern boundary of the school grounds,” Madame Evangeline announces. “We believe ‘Everybody’ is attempting to establish a foothold in our dimension.” She pauses, her gaze sweeping across the courtyard, settling on you for a brief, unsettling moment. “Therefore,” she declares, “we are forming a student task force to investigate and neutralize this threat. Volunteers are needed.” A tense silence hangs in the air. Students shift nervously, avoiding eye contact. You can feel Bruno’s gaze on you, a silent question in his eyes. Madame Evangeline steps forward, her voice softening slightly. “I understand this is a dangerous request. But our school, our world, depends on our courage. Who will stand with us?” A few hesitant hands rise into the air. Then, more. A wave of determination begins to spread through the crowd. You look at Bruno, then at the faces of your fellow students, fear and resolve mingled together. The weight of the medallion on your chest feels heavier now, a reminder of something you don’t quite understand. You glance at the window again, still unable to see forward and back at the same time. A choice hangs in the air, heavy and uncertain.

You turn to Bruno, meeting his gaze. "Even though we're just kids," you say, your voice barely above a whisper, "maybe the multitudes of students would serve as a formidable deterrent to whatever forces may be lurking around here." Bruno considers your words, his brow furrowed in thought. He glances around at the assembled students, their faces a mixture of fear and determination. "You might be right, Kaleido," he says, nodding slowly. "Strength in numbers, right? Even if we don't know exactly what we're up against." He puffs out his chest slightly, a renewed sense of confidence in his eyes. "Besides, someone's gotta protect all these nerds." Madame Evangeline surveys the courtyard, a flicker of satisfaction crossing her face as she takes note of the raised hands. "Very well," she says, her voice regaining its commanding tone. "Those who have volunteered, please step forward." A wave of students begins to move towards the platform, a hesitant but steady flow. You look at Bruno, an unspoken question passing between you. He nods decisively. "Let's do this, Kaleido," he says, a grin spreading across his face. "For the nerds." Together, you and Bruno join the throng of students moving towards the platform. As you get closer, you notice Madame Evangeline is watching each volunteer intently, her eyes assessing their capabilities. When you reach the front of the line, she stops you with a raised hand. "Kale Ido," she says, her voice cool and measured. "I've been watching your progress." A chill runs down your spine. You try to meet her gaze, but her eyes seem to pierce through you, seeing something you don't even understand about yourself. "Your potential is…unusual," she continues, a hint of something unreadable in her voice. "But potential is useless without control. Are you certain you're ready for this?" Before you can answer, Bruno steps forward, his massive frame casting a shadow over you. "Madame Evangeline," he says, his voice surprisingly gentle, "Kaleido here is one of the bravest people I know. He might not always show it, but he's got a good heart and a strong will. And I'll be right there with him, every step of the way." Madame Evangeline's gaze softens slightly as she looks at Bruno. "Very well," she says, nodding slowly. "But know this, both of you. This mission is not a game. The forces we are facing are dangerous, and the consequences of failure are dire." She hands each of you a small, intricately carved wooden token. "This will serve as your identification and allow you access to the restricted areas. Report to the eastern gate at dawn tomorrow. Be prepared for anything." With that, she dismisses you with a wave of her hand. You and Bruno step off the platform, the weight of the token heavy in your palm. The courtyard begins to disperse, the initial excitement replaced by a sense of apprehension. Tomorrow, you face the unknown.
