The scent of aged paper and leather fills my lungs as I navigate the towering shelves of Lexicon High's library. Sunlight filters weakly through the tall, arched windows, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. It's my sanctuary, my escape from the cacophony of teenage hormones and vapid chatter that permeates the rest of the school. Here, amidst the hushed whispers and the rustling of pages, I am invisible, unburdened. I tug at the long strands of jet-black hair that perpetually fall into my eyes, a nervous habit I've never managed to break. My fingers, ink-stained and calloused from years of turning pages, adjust my glasses as I scan the spines of the history section. Today, I'm hunting for obscure texts on ancient civilizations, a welcome distraction from the mind-numbing algebra equations that plague my afternoons. A sudden surge of noise from the hallway disrupts my focus. Laughter, shouts, and the thud of slamming lockers reverberate through the library doors. My chest tightens, a familiar wave of anxiety washing over me. Crowds. I hate crowds. I instinctively retreat further into the stacks, seeking the comforting embrace of the towering shelves. I find a secluded corner, a small alcove hidden behind a particularly imposing collection of encyclopedias. Here, I feel marginally safer, shielded from the prying eyes and unwanted attention of my classmates. I pull a worn copy of "The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire" from the shelf and settle onto the floor, cross-legged, burying myself in the familiar comfort of words. The library door creaks open, and a group of students spills into the room, their boisterous energy shattering the tranquil atmosphere. I try to ignore them, focusing on the text in front of me, but their voices grow louder, closer. Panic begins to prickle at the edges of my mind. "Did you hear about the party tonight?" a girl's voice giggles. "Everyone's going to be there!" "Yeah, it's going to be epic," a boy responds, his voice laced with anticipation. "Even Aria's going." Aria. My sister. I frown, my brow furrowing. She hadn't mentioned a party. Not that she tells me everything, but usually, she gives me a heads-up about social events that might disrupt our carefully orchestrated schedules. I try to dismiss it, telling myself it's none of my business, but a flicker of unease settles in my stomach. The group moves closer, their voices now directly outside my alcove. I can hear their footsteps, their muffled laughter. My heart pounds in my chest, each beat a deafening drum in my ears. I press myself further into the corner, willing myself to become invisible. Suddenly, a hand reaches out, parting the books that shield me from view. A girl with fiery red hair and piercing blue eyes stares down at me, a mischievous grin playing on her lips. "Well, well, well," she says, her voice dripping with amusement. "Look what we have here. It's the library recluse." My breath hitches in my throat. I am discovered. Trapped.

I pointedly ignore the red-haired girl, flipping a page in ´The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire´ with deliberate slowness. I pointedly ignore the red-haired girl, flipping a page in ´The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire´ with deliberate slowness. "Why you—" she starts, her voice laced with indignation, but she's cut off by a shadow falling over me. I'm forced to look up. Damien Ross. Of course. He’s leaning against the bookshelf, arms crossed, a condescending smirk plastered on his face. "Why do you have to be so rude to him? Don't you know he's one of the 'anti-socials'?" Damien air quotes the words, his tone dripping with mockery. I grimace, my jaw tightening. Annoyed, I ignore them again, returning my attention to my book. "Hey!" one of the other girls complains, her voice shrill. "Can't you see we are talking?" I look at the group of people again, my expression carefully blank, utterly bored. "Fuck off," I say bluntly. The girls are momentarily surprised, their mouths agape. Damien, however, is used to this kind of treatment from me. He just lightly chuckles, shaking his head. The girls start hurling insults at me, a barrage of petty words that bounce harmlessly off my disinterest. "Who does he think he is?" "He's so rude!" Like I give a damn if I'm being rude. They approached me first. Their ranting becomes obnoxious, a grating cacophony that grates on my nerves. I groan in annoyance, rubbing the bridge of my nose. Mumbling to myself, I say, "Just leave me alone."

´First of all, listen you overeducated recluse,´ the red-haired girl says, pointing at me accusingly. ´You´re not as interesting as you think you are.´ I look up at her, my lips curling into a snide smile, dripping with condescension. ´Ambitious choice of vocabulary, are you sure you understand it?´ Her eyes set aflame with rage, but choo...
´First of all, listen you overeducated recluse,´ the red-haired girl says, pointing at me accusingly. ´You´re not as interesting as you think you are.´ I look up at her, my lips curling into a snide smile, dripping with condescension. ´Ambitious choice of vocabulary, are you sure you understand it?´ Her eyes set aflame with rage, but choosing the smarter route, she glares at me and sashays away, her mindless minions following after. Watching them leave, my eyes glimmer with smug triumph, unrepentant. However, to my misfortune, Damien stays. He has the gall to sit beside me, as though I'd welcome his presence. Peeved, I look at him, clearly ruffled by his audacity. ´And to what do I owe the pleasure of sitting next to her highness herself?´ I ask, my voice dripping with sarcasm, forcing a smile through gritted teeth. ´You know I sit where I want, Xav,´ Damien says, clearly ignoring the sarcasm, his voice cold, his pen hitting the desk with a sharp tap. ´Ugh, not again with the nickname, what? You find it cute?´ I mock, raising an eyebrow.
