Prince Alexander slumbers soundly in his bedchamber, the heavy velvet curtains drawn tight against the dawn. He is three years of age, a tender bloom amidst the thorns of the castle. His hair, the color of a twilight sky just kissed by the moon, spills across the pillow. His skin is fair, almost translucent, and his lips are the delicate shade of a rose petal. Suddenly, the door creaks open, and a shadow falls across the room. A figure, cloaked and silent, approaches the bed. There is a glint of steel, a swift, brutal motion. Alexander gasps as a sharp pain blossoms in his small chest. Blood, warm and thick, stains his nightshirt. The intruder melts back into the shadows, leaving Alexander gasping, his lifeblood seeping into the sheets. But even as the darkness threatens to consume him, a strange calm settles over the boy. He looks down at the crimson stain spreading across his chest, a mere curiosity in his wide, blue eyes. "Come on, my fake doll," Alexander whispers, his voice raspy. With unexpected strength, he throws back the covers, revealing not a wounded child, but a meticulously crafted doll. It is a perfect replica of himself, down to the last detail of his light hair and innocent expression. The real Alexander emerges from his hiding place – a cramped, dark closet. His heart pounds in his chest, but his face is set with a strange determination. He is not one to run. He has learned to navigate the treacherous currents of the castle, to read the hidden meanings in whispered conversations and furtive glances. His prison has been his school, and cruelty his teacher. He pads silently to the window, peering out into the courtyard below. Torches flicker, casting dancing shadows on the stone walls. The castle is stirring, preparing for another day of intrigues and hidden agendas. Alexander knows he is a pawn in a game he does not fully understand. His mother's death left a void, and in its wake, suspicion and fear have taken root. He is confined to the castle, his only companions the dusty tomes he scavenges from the abandoned library. He touches the cold stone of the windowsill, his mind already racing. Who sent the assassin? And why? He knows one thing: he cannot stay hidden in the shadows forever. He must unravel the secrets that surround him, even if it means venturing into the heart of danger. With a deep breath, Alexander begins to formulate a plan. His small hands clench into fists. He may be just a child, but he is a prince, and he will not be a victim. He will turn the tables on his enemies, and he will reclaim what is rightfully his.

Alexander slips back into the closet, the doll once again in his bed. He waits, listening to the sounds of the castle awakening. Servants bustle in the hallways, their voices echoing through the stone corridors. The scent of woodsmoke and baking bread drifts in from the kitchens. As the first rays of sunlight filter through the cracks in the shutters, he emerges from his hiding place. He smooths his rumpled clothes and takes a deep breath, pasting a bright, innocent smile on his face. He ventures out into the hallway, greeting each servant he encounters with a cheerful, "Good morning!" Some return his greeting with genuine warmth, their faces softening at the sight of the young prince. These are the remnants of his mother's loyal staff, those who still remember her kindness and grace. Others sneer, their eyes filled with a cold disdain. These are the ones loyal to his stepmother, the woman who now reigns in his mother's stead. He ignores their hostility, his smile unwavering. He learned early on that showing weakness only invites more cruelty. His path leads him to the schoolroom, a cold, austere chamber where his tutor, Frau Stern, awaits. She is a severe woman with a sharp tongue and an even sharper hand. Her eyes narrow as Alexander enters, her lips pursed in disapproval. "You are late, Your Highness," she snaps, her voice like the crack of a whip. "My apologies, Frau Stern," Alexander replies, his voice polite and respectful. "I was… delayed." He omits the details of his near-assassination, knowing she would only dismiss it as a childish fantasy. The lesson begins, a tedious exercise in grammar and history. Frau Stern delights in pointing out his mistakes, her voice dripping with sarcasm. Each error is punctuated with a stinging blow from her riding crop. Alexander endures the pain in silence, his smile never faltering. Inside, he is seething, but he knows that resistance is futile. He focuses on the lessons, absorbing the information despite the pain. He is a sponge, soaking up knowledge from every source, both good and bad. He understands that knowledge is power, and power is the only way to survive in this treacherous world. As the lesson progresses, Alexander steals glances out the window. He watches the birds soaring through the sky, their freedom a stark contrast to his own confinement. He dreams of escaping the castle, of exploring the world beyond its walls. He knows that one day, he will be free. He just needs to be patient, to learn, and to wait for his opportunity. The smile never leaves his face, a mask that hides his true thoughts and feelings. He is the prince, the innocent child, the perfect doll. But beneath the surface, a fire is burning. He is Alexander, and he will not be broken.

Today is Alexander's fourth birthday, a milestone barely acknowledged within the cold stone walls of the castle. As dusk settles, casting long shadows across his room, he puts his doll in his bed, arranging the covers just so. Tonight, he will taste freedom, even if just for a little while. He ties a sturdy rope to his bedpost, the knot secure and practiced. He glances back at the doll, a silent promise in his eyes, and then he is out the window, descending into the darkness. The forest is a symphony of rustling leaves and whispering branches. Moonlight filters through the canopy, painting the path ahead in silver hues. He walks with a purpose, his small legs carrying him deeper into the woods. The air is crisp and cool, a welcome change from the stifling atmosphere of the castle. Suddenly, he hears voices, rough and menacing. A group of men emerges from the trees, their eyes glinting in the darkness. They spot him instantly. "Look what we have here," one of them sneers, his voice like gravel. "A lost little lamb." They surge forward, their intentions clear. Alexander knows he is no match for them. He turns and runs, his heart pounding in his chest. He ducks and weaves through the trees, his small size his only advantage. The men are close behind, their heavy footsteps echoing through the forest. Just as he thinks he is about to be caught, he stumbles upon a small, overgrown cottage. He throws open the door and slips inside, slamming it shut behind him. The cottage is dimly lit by a single candle, casting dancing shadows on the walls. An old man sits by the fire, his face etched with wrinkles and wisdom. He looks up in surprise as Alexander bursts in. "Help me!" Alexander gasps, his voice trembling. "They're trying to catch me!" The old man rises slowly, his eyes filled with concern. He leads Alexander to a hidden room behind the fireplace, a small space filled with books and strange artifacts. "Stay here, child," he whispers. "I will deal with them." He steps out to face the men, his presence radiating a quiet strength. Alexander listens from his hiding place as the old man confronts the kidnappers. He hears raised voices, angry shouts, and then silence. After what seems like an eternity, the old man returns, his face grave. "They are gone, child," he says. "They will not bother you again." He leads Alexander back to the main room and offers him a warm drink and a blanket. As Alexander sips the tea, the old man retrieves a book from a shelf. It is bound in leather and adorned with strange symbols. "This book," he says, "has been in my family for generations. It contains knowledge that can help you on your journey." He hands the book to Alexander, his eyes filled with a knowing sadness. "Guard it well, child. It may be your only hope." Alexander clutches the book tightly, his heart filled with gratitude. He knows he must return to the castle before his absence is discovered. The old man guides him back to the edge of the forest, his hand resting gently on Alexander's shoulder. As Alexander disappears into the darkness, he whispers, "Be careful, little prince. The world is a dangerous place." Back in his room, Alexander secures the rope and climbs back up, his heart still pounding. He places the book under his pillow, a secret treasure to be explored later. He climbs into bed, next to the doll, exhausted but exhilarated. He has tasted freedom, and he knows he can never go back to being a prisoner. He drifts off to sleep, his dreams filled with forests and magic, and the promise of a future he will carve for himself.
