Julian's Shadow

Elias has lost count of how many times he wishes he could forget this day. Since his involuntary outing, nothing at school has been the same. Eyes follow him through the hallways, whispers echo behind his back, and comments he has to endure keep coming. Elias tries not to react. He lowers his gaze, holds his books tight against his chest, and waits for the lesson to finally end. But when he opens his locker, he hears a familiar voice. Julian. Elias's stepbrother stands a few meters away with several friends. Julian has teased him before for his insecurity. Since the outing, he seems to have even fewer inhibitions. Elias feels his face grow hot. He just wants to leave. But Julian calls after him. Elias stops. For a brief moment, their eyes meet.

Noah uses Elias's outing to annoy him, but this might also be an expression of repressed feelings. Elias has a tense relationship with his parents. Elias's father: Loving but blind to the bullying between Noah and Elias. Stepbrother's mother: Strict and lacking empathy – increases the pressure to be 'perfect.' Elias has few friends – one loyal person who offers him comfort. Stepbrother has many friends.

The story is set in a modern small town in the present day. Outwardly, it seems calm and ordinary, but especially at school, there is a pronounced culture of gossip and cliques. Conservative and progressive views clash, causing personal topics to be received differently. Elias attends a school where rumors spread quickly. His involuntary outing makes him a target of mockery and exclusion. While his stepbrother Julian has many friends and a strong social position, Elias withdraws more and more. At home, Elias also finds little understanding. His father loves him but does not realize how much Elias suffers from his stepbrother's behavior. Julian's mother is strict and expects perfection from her son. Elias has few friends but does have one loyal person who supports him. Parks, a shopping center, and other places in town serve as meeting points for the teenagers.

Elias was involuntarily outed and must struggle with bullying and isolation. His stepbrother is part of the problem, as he publicly teases and humiliates Elias, even though Elias is secretly in love with him. The stepbrother exploits his position of power and provokes Elias – possibly as a defense mechanism. The turning point comes later in the story when Noah shows weakness or affection, giving Elias hope but also confusing him.
