Kate has no idea how much longer she can run. Her dress is far too conspicuous for the narrow alleys of the harbor. The expensive fabric betrays her origins, even as she tries to move as inconspicuously as possible. Behind her lies a life she never wanted. An arranged marriage. A father who decided her future. Society is marked by strict class distinctions and fixed expectations. Especially women from wealthy families have limited opportunities to determine their own lives. Marriages are arranged for economic and social reasons, with family property and reputation often taking precedence over personal desires. The sea forms a contrast to this controlled society. Between remote islands, dangerous waters, and bustling harbors, pirates find their freedom. At the same time, dangers, betrayal, and lawlessness lurk there.
