In 1992, a famine in southern Somalia, caused by civil war, led the United Nations Security Council to authorize a peacekeeping military operation. A conflict broke out between UNOSOM II and militias based in Mogadishu, loyal to Mohamed Farrah Aidid. In response, US President Clinton deployed Task Force Ranger to Mogadishu – composed of the 3rd Battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment, Delta Force operators, and crews from the 160th SOAR – to capture Aidid, who had declared himself president. Aidid's militias attacked a Red Cross convoy distributing food aid and seized it, but the Rangers were unable to retaliate due to the rules of engagement.
