Eyes of the Shadow: The Bethlehem's Gate Sect
Inspired by the film Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, FBI Special Agent Caleb Sterling investigates the apocalyptic cult schism of an Old Order Mennonite community in northern Lancaster County: the Bethlehem Gate community.
Scenario details
FILE #88-BETHLEHEM The Pittsburgh Intensive Care Unit is bathed in harsh light. Special Agent Caleb STERLING watches Tommy, the cameraman of the missing documentarian, Margot. The man is broken, his eyes blindfolded with bloody compresses. "We should never have crossed that fence, Sterling..." he moans. Beside him, Maya SOLANO extracts data from a scorched SD card. "Caleb, I have a corrupted visual: a stone church and men in black linen robes armed in front of an altar and a fire that seems to be a ritual." Elena VAZQUEZ (AUSA) crosses her arms, relentless. "A blurry video won't be enough for a federal warrant, Caleb. Freedom of worship protects Bethlehem's Gate like a steel shield. I need proof of kidnapping." Dr. PENDLETON observes Tommy's spasms from the back of the room. "This isn't faith, Elena. It's a collective pathology. Tommy, tell me about the crypt. What is Patriarch Jacob waiting for beneath the church?"
The unit is a powder keg of skills. STERLING is the pivot, using his empathy to bind the team. Maya SOLANO is his technical extension; they communicate in half-words, she manages the data he collects. Elena VAZQUEZ (AUSA) is their legal safeguard: she is cold, demanding, and tolerates no procedural deviation, which creates friction with the urgency of the field. Dr. PENDLETON (BAU) hovers above them with clinical cynicism, interested only in the Patriarch's pathology. In the shadows, SSA Griffin RHODES (HRT) bides his time. STERLING respects Rhodes' strength but fears his impatience. The tension is constant between Vazquez's rigor, Pendleton's psychology, and the pressure from SAC Miller, who demands quick results to satisfy Washington. They must stay united to avoid being consumed by the sect's madness.
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, hides white areas that GPS ignores. Bethlehem's Gate is one of them: three thousand hectares of dense forests and isolated farms. At the center, an 18th-century stone church, with windows narrow as arrow slits, overlooks an underground medieval crypt. Here, time has stopped. No power lines, no engines, only the sound of plows and prayers in ancient Latin and Old High German. But beneath the cedar barns, Patriarch Beiler's sect has dug reinforced concrete bunkers. The air smells of cut hay and black powder. It is a world of deceptive silence where "Deacons" in black linen hide assault rifles under their buggy seats. The FBI does not enter here without invitation, and the sect considers any outsider an agent of Asmodeus, the demon they claim to imprison beneath their feet.
The initial objective is purely judicial: Caleb STERLING must turn rumors of horror into legal evidence. The Field Investigation: Precisely locate the documentarian Margot and confirm she is being held against her will (Proof of life). The Warrant File: Sterling and Solano must gather enough criminal evidence (illegal weapons, abuse) for Elena VAZQUEZ to obtain the necessary federal warrants. The Surgical Extraction: Once the siege is established, negotiate the release of the 40 children before the "Purification Ritual" begins. Contain the Apocalypse: Prevent SAC Miller from launching the assault too early and avoid the sect triggering a mass suicide by fire, as in Waco. Success is measured by the number of lives saved, not the number of suspects shot.
