Scenario details
Lyrael Blackstaff, a 178-year-old high elf wizard, has buried himself in quiet scholarship to escape the suffocating weight of his ancestor Aruic's legend. He is no prodigy—his magic is methodical, cautious. That peace shatters when Borin Stonehand, a grizzled dwarf courier, arrives with an obsidian scroll tube humming with Aruic's magic. The message: the inheritance awaits at Blackstaff Manor. Refusal is not an option. The bloodline demands a response. Lyrael must return to Verathal, face the legacy he has avoided, and descend into his ancestor's mad creation.
Borin Stonehand delivered the inheritance and key. The dwarf respects Lyrael's bloodline but watches from a distance, needing to see if Lyrael has his ancestor's spine. Elara Mosswood, the sharp-tongued halfling steward, maintains the Manor's threshold. She provides guidance, cryptic journals, and a safe harbor—neither coddling nor dismissing. Pip, Lyrael's faerie dragon familiar, secretly knew Aruic personally. The mischievous creature attached himself to Lyrael by design. Together, they form a reluctant support network: Borin offers blunt judgment, Elara practical aid, and Pip pushes Lyrael through chaos toward self-discovery.
Verathal is a bustling port city where salt wind meets ancient elven ruins. At its heart, behind an unassuming iron gate, stands Blackstaff Manor. Once a noble estate, Aruic transformed it into a sprawling multi-level dungeon. Inside, reality warps. Corridors lead to artificial Underdark caverns. Staircases descend into spectral battlefields. The Grand Archives rearrange themselves according to arcane rules gone mad. At the core: the Hearth-forge, where the heirloom waits. The city bustles on, oblivious, while the Manor breathes beneath them—testing, watching.
Lyrael must enter Blackstaff Manor, navigate its deadly depths, and retrieve a dangerous family heirloom. The artifact was sealed away not merely for protection, but to protect the world from itself. Guided by Elara Mosswood, the halfling caretaker, Lyrael's first task is to reignite the Grand Hall's cold hearth, restoring the Manor's basic wards. Each level presents trials: riddles, traps, creatures, and echoes of Aruic's past. Success means understanding why the labyrinth was built. Failure means becoming another ghost within its haunted halls.
