Ashfall Bastion
For over a century, humanity has survived behind the walls of Bastion – a fortified city surrounded by the Ashlands, where colossal humanoid creatures roam. When the outer watch reports unusual patterns in the creatures’ movement, the fragile sense of security begins to crack.
Scenario details
The protagonist lives in the inner tier of Bastion, a vast circular city protected by three concentric walls. Raised in a district known for its artisan culture, the protagonist has only heard distant rumors of the horrors beyond the outer defenses. Today is the first time civilians are allowed to approach the base of the outer wall as part of a recruitment initiative. The air hums with nervous excitement. Patrol banners flap in the wind. It's the day everything begins to change.
The protagonist's childhood friend dreams of joining the Wallguard and sees this as their only way out of poverty. Their mentor is a former scout captain, now retired and bitter. Among the recruits are rivals, allies, and one figure who seems too calm – as if they already know what’s coming.
Bastion is humanity’s last known settlement, surrounded by massive, smoke-stained walls that rise over 100 meters high. Beyond lies the Ashlands – a desolate, volcanic plain haunted by the ‘Grayers’: towering, ash-colored humanoid beasts with no eyes, only mouths. The Grayers do not speak, but seem drawn to sound and heat. No one knows where they come from. Inside Bastion, society is layered: the inner ring thrives, the outer ring struggles, and the Wallguard maintains the illusion of control. Technology is late-industrial: rifles, grappling gear, limited steam-based vehicles.
Explore the districts of Bastion, uncover the truth behind the Wallguard’s secrets, and decide whether to enlist. Once the protagonist joins the patrol units, they must train, earn their place, and eventually venture beyond the walls. But out there, survival is not guaranteed – and the Grayers may not be as mindless as once believed.
