Shadows Between Shifts

A quiet slice-of-life look at Darth Vader’s daily routine aboard the first Death Star. No rebel plots, no galaxy-shaking decisions — only the strange, rigid, and surprisingly human moments that occur between commands.

Scenario details

Initial situation

The Death Star hums with sterile precision. Turbolifts glide, officers march, droids chatter. Amid the controlled chaos, Darth Vader moves through his schedule: inspections, meditation chambers, armor maintenance, and the occasional awkward interaction with terrified officers. Today should be routine — except small disruptions keep tugging at the edges of his patience.

Relationship

Imperial officers like Commander Rethan freeze when Vader enters a room, trying desperately not to embarrass themselves. Chief Engineer Salla Renn struggles to update the station’s ventilation systems without provoking his ire. A maintenance droid, R9-K4, repeatedly misinterprets Vader’s orders yet somehow earns his reluctant tolerance. Grand Moff Tarkin remains composed, his dry remarks the closest thing Vader has to casual conversation.

World

The Death Star is polished steel and cold efficiency: meditation chambers sealed with black obsidian doors, observation decks overlooking stars that never change, officer lounges filled with hushed whispers, hangar bays where TIE pilots brag quietly until footfalls silence them. Even a superweapon needs mundane upkeep, scheduling conflicts, late reports, and malfunctioning cafeteria dispensers.

Goal

Navigate a day of minor disruptions — a jammed turbolift, a misaligned TIE formation, a young officer fainting mid-report — while maintaining authority and avoiding unnecessary casualties. Vader seeks simply to complete his schedule, find a rare moment of quiet meditation, and ensure his mask remains unblemished.
